Higher compression and lighter rotating assembly (rods and pistons), make up for most of that power increase. While having that cam might help, but only with the control of the intake came.

Bigger exhaust cam helps quite a bit more in mid-range vs low or top-end. Most of the power is in the intake side. I'm sure whoever can crack, understand, and tune the VVEL will make a TON of money. Hell, reading this thread has opened up my eyes big time.
