Where do these things draw their aiflow from? The one time I've pulled my front fascia, those 'pockets' on either side where the filters sit seem to be completely enclosed.

Where do these things draw their aiflow from? The one time I've pulled my front fascia, those 'pockets' on either side where the filters sit seem to be completely enclosed. My sense is the airflow in there is pretty poor and sealed off. Am I wrong? Maybe the gains would really improve with a little ducting into those compartments.
