I did the spacer mod to the exhaust....
.... And it sounds awesome!! The best 14$ I have ever spent for sound!
I was thinking about AMS shorty for my Z and came across a thread about putting a few spacers where the exhaust attaches to the mid section, decided to give it a shot since a few ppl did it and it sounds great. Had a shop removing the rusted bolts and install the washers, and was laughed at when I told them what I want to be done. Well, I had the last laugh when both of their jaws dropped after hearing the sound! I later went to discount tire and the gm thought I had FI exhaust first. He had to look under the hood to confirm it was only $4 washers lol I know how some members might feel and say about it. But I can care less bc I am happy. Just to share with you guys if you are not loaded and wants to wake up the Z! |
If you are happy then that's all that matters. Enjoy! :)

wow, $14 for a few washers? :eekdance:
|
I am glad you like the way it sounds... I have read about a couple of people doing this to their cars, and it just seems odd to me. It just reminds me of working on older rusty cars with holes in the exhaust pipes and trying to find them in order to patch them up. I would not want that on my pretty Z. But again to each their own.
|
$4.06 exactly for 16 spacers and 10$ for the shop to install them.
There are no holes and it can be put back to normal in 5 min. And cosmetically, you couldn't tell a difference except now my car sounds like I have FI exhaust system |
at least you live in a warm climate. in my area (snow belt state), our early and late driving season is pretty chilly and that means we get steam from the exhaust until engine is warm.
looks weird when you got steam coming form UNDER the car.. |
If you dont mind me asking, do you get drone of any sorts at higher rpms? because i thought about doing the same but havent heard anyones exhaust who has done this mod, and last thing i want is to sound like a beater Honda driving past, especially here in orlando lol.
|
I love that people are still doing this mod :icon17:
Best poor man's mod ever  |

Actually the higher rpm you hit, the more engine sound you hear, thus the sound from the exhaust weaken. No drone whatsoever |
I wish that I have a convertable right now. The sound is epic for the price and its so hot outside

Ok, sorry what is this mod he is talking about? Is it the one where you intentionally create an exhaust leak? Aren't you losing power?
|
Yep
Not sure about losing power. |

Enjoy. I threw cherry bombs on a 71 Ford pickup and loved the sound. It sounded fast at least.
|
You likely lose a little on the low end because of the loss of back pressure
|
Low end torque is probably be lost due to lack of back pressure. How much is unknown. Plus just theoretical. Top end would probably be the same if not a bit more. I just don't like all the drone in cabin since it all resonates under the car.
|
Don't you lose torque. That would affect back pressure

this is interesting, any noticeable fumes or rasp?
Can you share a video or sound clip? |
I've been really tempted to do this mod but something tells me not to do it. I purchased the washers about 6 months ago but then decided to leave the car as is. Now that I read this thread, I'm thinking about it again. DAMN!

I did this for a few days to show my Fiancee about how loud the car was before I ditched my aftermarket exhaust in favor of the S-Tune. Sounds great no doubt, and its cheap. The stock tips look great so if you don't have the $$ to get an aftermarket exhaust, there is no shame in doing this mod.

i am completely happy with it as the sound is awesome and no rasp at all. it definitely attracts extra attention and more complements on top of a regular sexy Z :yum: |
Shouldn't it be called, "the exhaust leak mod"?
|
How many washers are usually used for this mod?

Regardless of whether he meant Fast Intentions, Forced Induction, or Formula 1, to compare the washer mod to any of these is blasphemous...

Great video btw :yum: |
Test pipes are a great inexpensive way to bring the factory exhaust alive and your not creating an exhaust leak, just another thought

:iagree:

I gotta admit, when I first heard about this mod I thought it was possibly the finest example of Redneck Engineering ever. But I've been wanting a little bit more sound so I called my favorite muffler shop to see how much it would cost for him to do it (I don't have ramps, yet, and didn't want to crawl under the car to DIY). After much laughing and asking several times if I was sure I wanted to do it, he said "Twenty bucks and that includes the washers." I thought "What the heck. We'll crank it up while it's still on the rack and put it back to normal if I don't like it."
I only had one washer put in but it sounds MUCH better. Very little difference at idle; just enough sound when the RPMs come up. Plus it's a little "throatier." Sounds very nice when downshifting. The only concern I have is that there are some soft suspension parts nearby. If I decide to leave the washers in, I think some sort of shield/deflector will be in order. |
This thread is cracking me up. No offense, OP. The F1 exhaust and exhaust leak comments made my day.

I like to be blunt in life, but i think some members are just :icon23: hurt bc they spent over 1000 for their setup (for hp and sound...blah blah blah) and we spent $14.04 for sound :p |
