Beluga CBE with CNT Resonated Test Pipes
So I found this exhaust through Shadezz:tiphat: a fellow forum member. Now keep in mind that this is not a Fast Intentions top of the line type of exhaust. This exhaust was purchased for track use on my Z. :excited: We installed it Friday night fired her up with no exhaust leaks. The following day I ran the car and noticed it hitting in some places. :shakes head: I would have to jack the car up another 4 times to get it just right. I believe this could of been avoided if I had an experianced mechanic install it. I am still having chatters on the crossmember hitting the exhaust every once in awhile. I plan to solve this issue next Friday. So here's a clip of the Z stock exhaust with Resonated CNT TP's and deleted rear resonators.
Now here's a couple of the Z with CNT TP's and the Beluga CBE. Notice the hiss coming from the exhaust? This only comes about at high RPM's. I have done 3 leak checks with no luck of finding anything! I believe the hiss might be from the high flow due to the TP's. Any input would be appreciated! |
After watching the videos...I think it does have to do with your test pipes.....I don't have them and planned on not doing them cause of the sound. I hear the hiss only under 2k rpm on yours...almost like a little blow off sound.
Can you post pics of yours connected to the test pipes? |
Yeah I'll post them up in a bit.

Here's some pic's of the Y-pipe connection to the TP's.

Here are a few of mine without TP....

So I do think that the TP's have something to do with it....I would like some others to chime in about exhaust with Test pipes sounds...
Here is my video for those wondering without TP... |
The hiss is pretty unavoidable...........unless you take great steps to mitigate it. A free-er flowing exhaust nets the hiss. I bothered me for a while, but I concentrate on the awesome gurgle that my exhaust makes on deceleration instead of the hiss, lol.

Yeah I have the same test pipes and mine hiss too, especially when I let off the gas and the car starts to slow down. But when upshifting it's like a little blow off valve :p
|
I'm hoping to get some in car vids up later today. I wonder how it will sound with the MHI kit installed?

I only have experience with CNT resonated pipes, but I've heard other brands give you a hiss as well. It isn't a "leak" sounding hiss but really like a muffled BOV. When your windows are down it sounds amazing because it's right outside your window so the sound bounces off others cars around you and stuff.
But to try and answer your original question, no it's not just CNT pipes that hiss |
Does anyone have an idea on what I can do about the cross member hitting?
|
Does it rattle?

Everyone that has anything other than stock components before the mid-pipe/y-pipe has the hiss. I think Motordyne found a way to mitigate it, but it is still there. I feel your pain though. I searched for exhaust leaks for weeks, lol.
Just for reference, I have the Greddy 20G TT kit. The downpipes (2.5" ish) connect straight to the F.I. TT-TDX (3"). My theory is that the difference in piping size contributes to the hiss as well as any places where the pipes split (in my case). |

No its the one right in the middle of the car the mid pipe is right over it.
|
The exhaust is also 2.75"i forgot to tell you guys this.
|
You have to loosen the mid pipe a little from both ends and push it up and tighten them back up....will require 2 people unless you have something you can shove vertically to hold it up while you tighten. Also a lift would help tremendously. I had the same problem with my greddy exhaust.
|
Yeah I did that with the factory Jack
|
Hmmm....it worked for me.
|
A Y pipe with a wider diameter than stock will cause hiss.
I believe the same is true when going to a H or X pipe (other than, I should expect, the OEM Nismo H). Unresonated test pipes will hiss and then rasp on coast down. The only way I know of to avoid it is to keep the Y pipe close to OEM diameter and to have resonated TP's. |
Sounds like I'll be sticking with my factory TP then...I like how she sounds just with the Y-pipe and exhaust.
|
She settled out today the hiss is not so loud and the exhaust sounds awesome the guys from work all complemented it. Said it sounds way better than the other set up.

You can pick up a set of used resonated TP's from someone, and that should eliminate the rasp and 95% of the hiss on coast down anyway. The Y pipe will probably hiss no matter what you do... I went from a wider one back to S-tune (ever so slightly wider than OEM) because I couldn't stand the hiss. Good luck... hopefully you will either get used to it, or find a combo that works. |
Beluga got in touch with me today and I told him what was going on with the cross member he's looking into it now to see if there's anything to be done. He wants to make sure that I'm 100% satisfied

PS. Be careful with that Micro fiber towel between the cross member and exhaust as the stainless steel gets pretty hot....Don't want a microfiber towel catching fire..... |
Yeah my commute is so short the exhaust barely had time to warm up. I'll work on it Friday.
|
Still loving my exhaust system by Beluga!!!
|
That first week I never even turned on my radio!

I already did my first full under car cleaning......I took cleaner to the whole exhaust as it was pretty dirty from the last (late spring snow we had here in Denver). I'm still amazed at the quality and sound from this entry level exhaust!!!
DZEL? What did you end up doing with the exhaust hitting your cross member? Lets hope that micro cloth isn't still under there!! LOL |
No I added washers to the cross member it took like 20 minutes total. I can't wait till I get the turbos in. I recently took the wife shopping 2 hours away from home and decided to take the Z. She loves the sound. I even had sometime to get on it a couple of times. I gave her a good bath (the Z lol) after the trip and polished up the exhaust as well.

1) Do you have to buy the Y pipe with this setup for the Beluga CBE? 2) If you don't go with the Y pipe will it change the tone or is the Y pipe more for HP gains? 3) Do you have any fitment issues. I'm about to pull the trigger on this... |

1. No you do not, but for the sound I would and extra HP!!! (only 155.00) 2. Yes the sound will be a bit more quite I assume. Yes HP gains!! 3. I did not, but Dzel had to put spacers on his cross member. Easy fix. 4. I cant say more how happy I am to have a great sounding exhaust for under 500 bucks...stainless steel and tig welds at that. I would pull the trigger again anytime and would tell everyone else the same!!!:driving: |

My wife says the same thing....really makes the car sound like a new machine. |
I paid the TT kit in full yesterday should be here in about a month. Still deciding if I'm going to install it myself or not.
