Mine was keyed but my steering wheel did a full spin for whatever reason. Slip light was on but just had a shop reset it rather then actually re-adjusting it lol. The wheel was straight and driving straight since the computer read it was a full 360 degrees off exactly lol.

Ummmmm i lost count! But i have only been putting in 45 mins to an hour everyday. I probably have about 5-6 hours invested of actual wrench time, not including breaks, but including the friggin 2 hours wasted on the heat shield on the drivers side

AlexRaymond19 02-15-2013 05:08 PM

Little update, having a very tough time getting the header in. I called Z1 since they have done the install and they said i have to take all the head studs out... This should only take another 2 hours :-(

Sorry brother... If I was any closer to you I would've loved to help

AlexRaymond19 02-15-2013 07:03 PM

It actually was not too bad, got the header on, just have to finish bolting it down. I'm really shooting to be done in about 2 hours, but i might have to run to the store to grab another u joint...

AlexRaymond19 02-15-2013 08:37 PM

I am seriously thinking about wheeling my car outside, pouring gas all over it, lighting it on fire, and collecting the insurance money... Would probably be easier

Reading this thread is like reading a "comedy of horrors". :icon14: Hang in there. It will be done before you know. And you will be very happy listening to it fire up for the first time. Look at it this way. What you are doing is a character builder. :icon17:

I feel my idea was easier lol. I unbolted the motor mount and raised it a bit to get more clearance to slide it in. Worked like a charm and i didn't have to remove a single head stud lol.

AlexRaymond19 02-16-2013 09:10 AM

It was not bad taking the studs out and putting them back in, it was pretty simple, its just the momentum headers and shaped in suck a way that the first bottom bolt on the drivers side it like impossible to put on lol

I said the same exact thing, except I did mine in freaking July, 100F weather. Hang in there!

this is always nice as well, I despise paying someone a crapload of money to do something I could do myself. You have the money in your pocket and the peace of mind knowing it was done right :hello:

Lol i think the issue last night was i had been up since 4am and it was past my bed time hehe

Hey Alex, when you're done, can you ask the mods to sticky this thread and rename it "why you shouldn't install headers yourself"

LOL.... I'm was getting close to ordering F.I. LTHs ... now I'm even more scared.:eekdance:

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2013 12:22 PM

Find a sucker to install it on the cheap.

My problem with that is that sucker could **** up the o2 sensors - then I'm the sucker...

Make sure they're not that much of a sucker... Impact wrench will ruin them... IMO you should heat them, then splash water on them to shock the metals
Should come out like a charm

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2013 01:13 PM

I'll say I told the shop to remove them before going ape $hit on the headers. They did, but I still had one go bad. Put too much pressure while you are trying to break it loose can just as easily damage it as the impact wrench. I didn't say don't coach them, but there are plenty of good mechanics looking for work that are willing to do it.

AlexRaymond19 02-16-2013 02:08 PM

Hey chris, what tool did you use to get the last 2 bottom bolts on the passenger side?! Nothing seems to fit, and i really want to avoid using an open face wrench. I have the ratchet style wrenches, and the bolt seems like it is way to close to the header pipe to fit over it :-(

this. In my opinion you can't go around bragging and showing off your car if all you did was pay people to do stuff for you lol. There's very few things I don't know how to do on my car, and the things I don't know are quickly being learned. The best thing you can do is ask a crap load of questions and then just get under there and do it. The feeling of accomplishment you get afterwards is totally worth it. Plus when you're showing your car off and people look at you kinda amazed when you tell them nobody has touched your car but you is awesome :)

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2013 08:00 PM

As much as I would like to agree, I cannot. Some of us (such as myself) had no garage, no tools, no ramp, no jacks, nothing to do this ourselves. Not only that, there are easier cars to learn on. I paid someone to put my stuff on. They never worked on 370's. I gave them advice from everyone here on the forums on how to approach some of the mods being done. I don't feel inferior because I was unable to do it myself, I'm happy I could afford to do it in the first place. And huge props to everyone who does do it themselves, but to say we can't be proud of what we have because we didn't, or couldn't put it in, I disagree.

Sorry to derail. I'm just rooting for you Alex. The headers are a PITA. It was a nightmare just trying to unclip my O2 sensor for troubleshooting. I spent 40 minutes trying to undo it and another 20 trying to put it back in. I want to see pics of the slayed headers and the new ones when your all done :) Maybe make a pimp cane out of it.

AlexRaymond19 02-16-2013 08:10 PM

ALL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its soooooooo loud holy ****! I think i have a small leak somehwere on the exhaust because i heard a little hissing noise. But it seemed to go away once it got a little warmer. I cant run car very long because its in my garage under my house and the fumes got pretty bad, so tomorrow i will put insurance back on here and do a proper test drive

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2013 08:17 PM

Woot! CG's! Now to wait patiently for some header pron.

Mods, can we now change this thread's title to "Why you shouldn't install headers yourself" LOL

I tend to sort of agree. I can understand if you can't do it yourself, but there is a bit of pride to doing it on your own. That being said, I do farm out a lot of my stuff now, not because I can't do it, but with two full time jobs, I can earn more money in the time I would take to do it myself than I have to pay to have it done, and I love freeing a garage space up and leaving my car at Z1 for weeks at a time (not because they are slow, but because they are far away.) I usually drop it off on the way home from a track day in Alabama and pick it up right before the next one when I need stuff done.

With headers and test pipes some hissing is going to exist on deceleration. It's just the nature of the VQ. Now if you're hearing is an acceleration then there is a problem.

ts-c63 02-16-2013 10:10 PM

Video video video!! I have to hear this thing cold start and fly bys !

AlexRaymond19 02-16-2013 10:45 PM

Im uploading vids now, sorry no fly bys yet. There is still 2 feet of snow on the ground lol. I just have a cold start, some revs inside the cabin, and some about 15 feet behind. I will get better video tomorrow, and also throw up an album of all the pics i took during the project.

I still need to put the steering together, and somehow get the bar back on that supports the test pipes, but it does not line up right, will i be fine without it? Still have plenty of time to figure it out

You can run without it. Some HFC's and TP's don't even have support mounts on them. My TP's didn't line up very well either, I ended up bending the bracket to get it to work.

AlexRaymond19 02-16-2013 10:55 PM

The hiss is really prominent, almost sounds like a cheesy supercharger or turbo blow off in person. I don't really mind, im just stoked its all done. And yes, mods can rename and sticky this thread as "why not to install headers yourself, unless you want to spend up to 20 hours of painful labor, about 100 bucks in extra tools, headaches, heart attacks, scarred arms, bruised ego, and cry yourself to sleep every night until the job gets finished" :-)

Huck 02-17-2013 01:12 AM

Hahahaha yeah that's pretty much the case.

The hiss is totally normal, I actually took my car to two different shops thinking I had screwed up and they did every test known to man. That's just the sound our cars make for some reason... Congrats on it being done!

And I didn't mean to come off like a **** about the self installation thing, I was thinking more of the super rich arrogant ******** that throw $100k at their car and then brag about what "they" did to it. I just like the sense of accomplishment that comes with doing things yourself, but I totally get that not everyone is able to do the same, nor does everyone have the time or the interest in doing it themselves. It's fine with me because that's how I make extra money! :bowrofl:

Sweet, i wont worry about the hiss. I was going to take the Z out for a spin, but i don't have tail lights... Totally forgot i am waiting on those puppies.

I just want to throw out a huge THANK YOU for everyone who helped me out! I would have never finished, or even started if it wasn't for everyone's help. You all have been awesome!

Mike 02-17-2013 08:22 AM

I don't have the support bar anymore either. Its no big deal

AlexRaymond19 02-17-2013 09:33 AM

Sweet, thanks for the info mike.
