Race car sound? I think so!
I've been a proud owner of the AAM S-Line Short tails for a little while now, about three months, and have enjoyed every minute...
But naturally, because I am young and dumb and have plenty of hearing left (that could be disposed of), I decided to gain some horsepower and also get some more sound. Inspired by Road America's VSCDA event in early September (somewhat), I bought AAM test pipes and an eBay Y pipe. I must warn those who want a loud exhaust, this is almost as loud as it can possibly get. The only resonated portions which remain are the two 12" resonators on the stock midpipe, after the Y pipe section. The majority of the rasp occurs at the common point of ~3000 to 4000 RPM. There's a bit of rasp if you're under 1700 and giving it more than maybe 50% throttle. I'm sure those who want to eliminate this rasp would use (R)HFCs, res'd test pipes, or perhaps the motordyne Y-pipe with the resonated or cat section. I have found a few videos where the exhaust is mostly straight piping, but most seem to be custom fabricated. This "solution" is easily made with 500 dollars and all off-the-shelf components. The lack of a tune, however, means that I have lost a lot of the bottom end torque, until I hit 3000-3500 RPM, at which point, even the VDC has trouble controlling the power. The following are some Youtube videos which may help some people who want a loud exhaust. You might have a light wallet or just want to get a specific sound. No offense to anyone, because my wallet is always light. Time for long tube headers and a newly developed midpipe section... Videos in the spoiler. Cold start right after the install:

I'd like to see if yours is louder than mine lol I'm runnin non-red cbe and non-res test pipes. Only thing on mine to kill the noise is carbon fiber cans that's it lol

I've been thinking about taking my exhaust off and running just test pipes lol
|
do it!
connect them and put a cones/megaphones out the passenger before the rear passenger tire ala viper! |
I hate to be a downer, I thougt it sounded horrible. It's way too raspy and the drone is probably worst in person. It's more Honda Civic with a busted muffler than a race car.

Nice setup, a little to raspy for my taste

I feel that's also where the long tubes will come in and fix that issue. Quote:

pretty cool you that you least tried it out. I just don't think I could drive with that much noise everyday. Don't get me wrong, I think loud exhaust is pretty cool, but it definitely needs to scream like that car in the other vid instead of a loud fart.

Lol I have the short tails and have been thinking of getting test pipes. That's loud as hell. My girlfriend hates the rasp now. I'm hoping to get stillen g3 soon to help. I like though man! I may have to ;)

I'm not sure from the videos whether I like the sound or not. Sometimes I love it and others it seems too raspy. I'd like to hear this setup in person though. |

You should be able to get the sound you're looking for without LTH. A Y pipe to single 3.5 exit will do it, however you're going to have alot of rasp still. Unless you get a resonator I doubt you will kill the rasp. I've found though that given enough seat time you learn where your rasp RPMs are and get pretty good at avoiding it... takes some time though.

My single side seems like it's a little louder than that... but without the rasp.

I've got a surewin Y pipe, 3 inch tubing to a vibrant quiet resonator through a 3 inch buddy club race spec muffler. I wasn't crazy about the muffler when I got it, but after putting it on the car it looks good. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/d06fc034.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/2994c43b.jpg The downside is that it's so low to the ground... http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/f4b24014.jpg 3 inch piping really doesn't like to fit under the rear diff, especially with my car being so low. I'm about to re-do it soon though as I have a Zele kit coming. It's also about 30lbs lighter than a full Stillen CBE. |
oh yeah single for sure will be much lighter. Very impressive! all mandrel bent? what about cats? stock cats?
|
How much did that cost you all together?
|
Can't say I'd be able to do a single exit. I have always loved duals, and with the stock rear bumper having two cut outs for tips, my OCD symmetry would get the better of me.
That single exit sounds great. Doesn't seem all that raspy at all, although we aren't seeing much load on it. As for volume, can't really say unless it's in person. That's the only problem with buying/building exhausts. You get the note but not the volume. If I could, I would retitle this thread as "How To Get a Race Car Sound." So far we've got good contenders! |
Of course this is just my opinion, but I have the FI LTH and non res CBE with the cf mufflers, and I LOVE IT. For me it's the perfect mix of smooth deep note and a roar when you get on it. The fun starts at 0:40 :)

Sounds great. I would want a bit more of high rpm scream, but that is pretty close to my goal.

I used all mandrel bent tubing, I don't have any sort of that at my shop, so I had to pie cut some pieces to get the angles I wanted. Tacked it all up and then hit it with the tig. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/8ad67143.jpg Cost me close to $700 in supplies after buying all of the SS flanges, muffler, resonator and tubing, ect. It sounds pretty exotic, I have had a lot of people tell me it doesn't sound like a Nissan. haha. |
that off throttle, in between shift, hiss, if only there was a way to cure that with LTHs

now you guys are making me wanna buy a gopro to show you what mine sounds like. i dont feel my iphone videos do it justice. i do have a 4S so its good video but idk lol |

he recently just added a 1 in 2 out muffler right at the Y pipe, it quiet it down a lot but still has a hiss |
Quote:
The hiss is pretty quiet, and since most cameras without a separate sound input will normalize, you'll hear the exhaust over everything, because it's the loudest thing. |
