Race car sound? I think so!

I've been a proud owner of the AAM S-Line Short tails for a little while now, about three months, and have enjoyed every minute...

But naturally, because I am young and dumb and have plenty of hearing left (that could be disposed of), I decided to gain some horsepower and also get some more sound.

Inspired by Road America's VSCDA event in early September (somewhat), I bought AAM test pipes and an eBay Y pipe.

I must warn those who want a loud exhaust, this is almost as loud as it can possibly get. The only resonated portions which remain are the two 12" resonators on the stock midpipe, after the Y pipe section.

The majority of the rasp occurs at the common point of ~3000 to 4000 RPM. There's a bit of rasp if you're under 1700 and giving it more than maybe 50% throttle. I'm sure those who want to eliminate this rasp would use (R)HFCs, res'd test pipes, or perhaps the motordyne Y-pipe with the resonated or cat section.

I have found a few videos where the exhaust is mostly straight piping, but most seem to be custom fabricated. This "solution" is easily made with 500 dollars and all off-the-shelf components. The lack of a tune, however, means that I have lost a lot of the bottom end torque, until I hit 3000-3500 RPM, at which point, even the VDC has trouble controlling the power.

The following are some Youtube videos which may help some people who want a loud exhaust. You might have a light wallet or just want to get a specific sound. No offense to anyone, because my wallet is always light.

Time for long tube headers and a newly developed midpipe section...

I'd like to see if yours is louder than mine lol I'm runnin non-red cbe and non-res test pipes. Only thing on mine to kill the noise is carbon fiber cans that's it lol

depending on your cat back, I'm pretty sure the volume might be the same, just different sound. I'm all pipe now, not even any muffler sections.

I guess it's time to buy some long tubes and fab some piping for the midpipe! I gotta be even louder!

FPenvy 09-17-2012 07:11 PM

I've been thinking about taking my exhaust off and running just test pipes lol

Kingbaby 09-17-2012 07:49 PM

do it!

connect them and put a cones/megaphones out the passenger before the rear passenger tire ala viper!

I hate to be a downer, I thougt it sounded horrible. It's way too raspy and the drone is probably worst in person. It's more Honda Civic with a busted muffler than a race car.

I was just gonna put 90 degree turndown on them but I gotta find out if it hurts the engine doing that

Nice setup, a little to raspy for my taste

It is indeed raspy as hell, and that's how I feel; I'm on that divide between thinking it's just fart can instead of race exhaust.

I feel that's also where the long tubes will come in and fix that issue.

I think you'll just eliminate way too much backpressure. You'll have to find a way to do that properly, not to mention that much noise is pretty questionable in terms of "legality."
