Yes, another which exhaust....

I know, I know, this has been done to death, I have been reading threads for ages and too be honest there is "too much" information and actually disinformation.

I'm looking for some sensible advice on which system will suit my needs, I’m 46 so I’m not looking to turn my car into a ricer, I have decided to keep the car for another couple of year so I need it to sound better...right now the standard exhaust is crap, sounds like a lawn mower, so I want something that not necessarily louder, just more tuned.

I love the sound of the G35/350Z and I was about to pull the trigger on the Borla but then I read their is drone at 80mph which is where I do 75% of my driving!

So the question is which exhaust do you think will suit my needs.

One last thing, in 50% of the ‘Which exhaust” threads out there is always a smart *** that has all the answers but instead of passing that experience on they slag the OP for having the audacity to ask a question, so to the flamers, save it! if you’re sick of reading these threads, stop read them? and more importantly why do you waste time reply sarcastic comments, if you’re looking for attention buy a dog!

Mature comments please, I am looking for some genuine advice?

Regards

:tiphat:

Maybe stillen, would be your best bet. From everything I've seen, there is no drone but still has enough rumble.

Personally I have the oem nismo exhaust and it gave the exhaust a little bass but still real quiet . Probably should have been the stock setup . I just added berk hfc and sounds a little meaner but still quiet no drone. Perfect for me cuz I'm not big on hearing exhaust from the inside but I want u to hear a little something from the outside.

Lol The lawn mower/ vacuum sound of our cars (i know what u mean) seems like it is
more from intake side. I swear my previous 04 maxima growled so much nicer I loved hearing that thing.

I just had the Stillen CBE installed w/no other exhaust modifications. My situation is a bit like yours (maybe) ... I'm 60 and was looking to improve the rather lacklustre sound of the stock exhaust, but was not interested in something that would wake up the neighbourhood. So far, so good ... albeit I haven't put many miles on yet. Loudness (grumble) is up just a notch. No drone or rasp at cruising speed (2500 to 3500 rpm). Build quality is good ... except that I swapped out the U-bolts that come with the kit with some heavy-duty band clamps to secure the slip joints to ensure a better, more durable seal. Also, the exhaust doesn't hang low, so no real chance of scrapping. (In fact, I think it hangs higher than the stock). It is heavier than stock, but the weight is over the rear axle ... which is good for me since at 60, I'm not into drifting! From the rear, it looks like stock. In other words, it's not really visible. Anyway, trust these comments are helpful. I'm pleased so far with the Stillen.

Check out tanabe. Its starts after the y-pipe,so it keeps it much tamer than other systems. And if later on you wanna louden things up,you can buy a aftermarket y-pipe

olddudesrule 06-15-2013 10:25 AM

51 year old owner here. After buying the car a month or so ago, that was one of the first mods I knew needed to be done. It's just too quiet for my taste, but same as you, I don't want anything annoying. I shop exhaustively before buying, as I hate to have to buy a part twice. That said, I listened (in person at local meets, and on the internet) to nearly every exhaust thread there was. In the end, I went with Fast Intentions CBE (w/12" resonators, leaving stock cats). I think the sound is as close to perfect (for me) as I'm gonna find, and I've read nothing but great things about the build quality of Tony's work.

The only drawback for me is the wait, which right now, seems to be @ 3 months, give or take. For me, it's worth it. I just have to fight the dreaded "washer mod" bug for another 8 weeks....:tup Cost may be another issue, but wasn't something I got bent about. Most of the mid-end exhausts seemed to hover @ $1300+.

There were a couple of others I thought were close (AAM and HKS), but in the end, I thought FI just sounded better, especially as a catback system.

Good luck with the search!

370Z JT 06-15-2013 10:26 AM

Check out Invidia. It's one of the quieter exhaust and makes good power.

This... Not cheap, but IMO, the best exhaust that hits below 93db. Tips don't stick out, look classy, lined up to perfection, and looks so much nicer than Stillen's, Invidia's, or nearly every other exhaust. Don't listen to my vids tho... I run long tubes lol.

forza370z 06-15-2013 11:56 AM

First of all, if you plan on keeping the stock cats then you will have more choices suit your needs. Anything with HFCs or TPs will become loud and likely to be raspy. So in your case, you better off just keep the stock cats.

Here I list the cbe systems I had or heard in person from the quietest to loudest(everything is paired with stock cats here). Hope it helps.

Stock Exhaust:
Loudness - 3/10
Tone - Lawn mower/Vacuum cleaner.
Look - Dual Vacuum cleaner.

Stock Nismo Exhaust:
Loudness - 4/10
Tone - Not loud. It's deeper than the stock exhaust. Very nice sound at low rpm. But still sounds like Vacuum cleaner at WOT.
Look - Stock exhaust look. Little bit more aggressive due to the bigger exhaust tips.

HKS Hi Power:
Loudness - 5/10
Tone - Not loud at all with the stock cats. Sound deeper then the Nismo. But when you hit the gas, it has this nice sporty growl which Nismo doesn't have. This exhaust has 0 drone 0 rasp 0 rattle with stock cats. I will recommend it.
Look - Nice V shaped canisters look mean yet still get you a lot ground clearance. I personally love the blue burnt titanium adjustable exhaust tips. But others might think it's rice. So it's not for everyone.

Invidia Gemini Exhaust:
Loudness - 5/10
Tone - Not a loud exhaust system as well. But it's deep and has this very nice VQ sound when opens up. No drone. No rasp. No rattle. This is one of the best bang for the buck exhaust IMHO.
Look - Looks very nice overall. But the exhaust tips stick out little bit. Will look perfect if you add a rear defuser. Again, I love the blue burnt tips. But it also comes with the stainless steel tips option.

Motordyne E370:
Loudness - 5/10
Tone - Beautiful! Sound very similar to the Invidia Gemini. Deep when cruise. Nice VQ growl when opens up. No drone, no rasp, no rattle.
Look - Perfect fit. V shaped canisters/resonators looks aggressive. Also comes with the blue burnt tips or stainless steele tips options.

Fast Intentions Carbon Fiber Exhaust
Loudness - 6/10
Tone - Deep, deep and deep! Deepest of all. It's one of the most popular exhaust system on this forum. Sound truely amazing. Very mellow sound. It's little bit louder than the exhaust systems listed above. 0 rasp. I don't feel the rattle when I sit in my buddy's car. But according to him, there is little drone around 2 - 2.33818300 rpm. LOL.
Look - V-shaped canisters hanging low and mean. Stainless steele tips look classic. One of the best looking exhaust IMO.

Gibby1113 06-15-2013 12:45 PM

I have the ark dts exhaust and I love it. I love the start up and how it sounds when I floor it. Doesn't really have drone. I wrote a little review on it maybe that'll help you out. Good luck.

Stillen Exhaust just got delivered to the dealership. On my way to get it installed on Roadster. Exhausted every review out there. Chose Stillen for lack of drone and most power. Like the NISMO fit better, but love the Stillen Gains.

Had a NISMO exhaust on my 2007 Altima a few years back and it looked/sounded insane.

Being 40 yrs old and not wanting drone/look of a slammed honda civic, I chose Stillen. Will publish a review a little later.

I would be very interested to hear your comments, I've narrowed it down to either the Stillen or the Invidia Gemini.

So..... Exhaust is installed. I love it, and it is exactly what it needed to be. I never told the wife, and dont plan on doing so:) This is my second "aftermarket" exhaust I have put on a car, so I have a little bit of experience, not as much as others on the board. Last exhaust was NISMO for V6 Altima

Went on pretty easy with the dealer techs. They did wish it came w/new gaskets/bolts, but my car only has 4k miles on it, so it was a very easy swap.

Initial impressions after driving home with the top down.... Looks pretty nice from "straight behind" veiw. Once you go to three quarter view, the tips look pretty big/come down below the bumper. It doesnt look "rice", but doesnt look as nice as NISMO in my opinion. I would rate "sleekness" as a 7 out of 10 compared to stock look.

I dont think it is Stillens "fault", more the challenge with the way the bumper cover is shaped/stops at the exhaust tips.

Quality/fit/finish is OEM quality and have no worries this thing is going to break any time soon.

Sound, very subjective and still needs to burn in a little. VERY close to stock. ZERO drone, little "deeper" sound on start up, and wide open throttle is a little more "bite" to it. This is a "sleeper" system until you hammer it. The only give away are the tips.

Please know, I already had dual K&N intakes installed, so there isnt as much "wow" factor right out of the gate.

Performance? I can tell a little bit of a difference in the "seat of the pants", but maybe not as much as you might w/o and intake already on. Definately breathes better in the mid-range.

Overall, Stillen service was great, price was pretty good, and quality is OEM or better. Very happy. Overall, very ahpy with my purchase.

Best part, I got the exhaust on and any performance gains and the wife should not really notice:)

I hope this helps!

Exhaust change.....

Hey guys....

So I want to change the sound of the Z, but dont want to break the bank or do a full system at the moment. I was looking at AAM short tails, and like those but didnt know what other options are out there?

Any reccomendations?

red2010z 06-18-2013 11:39 AM

Save you money till you have enough for the real deal! Short tails are a good options.

Whatever you do please don't do the washer MOD to your exhaust.

Look on the classifieds they have some pretty good deals on all types of stuff! Including exhaust.

Its not really a matter of saving for me, just dont want to go that route..or at least at this moment.

Something like shortails that can change the sound is about what Im looking for.

paying 400 plus dollars for two feet of piping isn't exactly what I would call a good deal. just curious why you wouldn't want a complete cat back like top speed the same money?

Im not all that familiar with the exhaust/mod scene, so I dont know exactly what all is out there and thought the short tails were the best way to change your note for a fraction of the price.

If it was a matter of the same price for a full set up, I wouldnt mind that, just didnt know that was possible. All the full set ups I have seen around are 1000+. Really about all I am looking to do to my car, is potentially exhaust and a intake.

Any recommendations?

Check out this thread : http://www.the370z.com/intake-exhaus...0z-thread.html

Then check classifieds for pricing, you could find a full system for a decent price.

In all truth 100% no bull, when im cruising @100kms\60mph I cant hear nothing. there is a minor bass tone and that's it, even cruising in 4th gear, there is no sound on the inside. I'll make a video.
on hard acceleration, yes she is loud but more on the deep bass side with zero & I mean zero rasp.
when cruising, its 5% louder than stock.

Looking for a new exhaust

Guys I need your feedback.

I installed the F.I. non-res catback + non-res testpipes and loved it until the rasp and hiss started to get to me. So I call Tony at F.I. and he suggested to add resonators to the catback so he sent the 12" res to switch with the non-res Xpipe.

It brought down the exhaust note but barely did anything to the rasp and hiss. I love the F.I. exhaust but I need a change.

I was looking into several exhausts and was hoping those of you who have these exhausts would give me some feedback on the sound and performance so I could choose properly.

I was looking into:

HKS hi-power
Greddy Ti-C
Greddy Evo3
Greddy SP
Injen CBE

I would appreciate it if you would give some comments regarding those exhausts.

Thank you

2sl0w 07-14-2013 07:10 PM

All exhaust will have some rasp and hiss with test pipes. Nature of the beast. Some say the m370 manifold can reduce rasp as well.

If you don't want rasp or hiss throw the stock cats back on or get resonated test pipes or hfc.

How come no one looks into the MXP true dual exhaust. Maybe there's something I don't know, but I purchased it, and not only does it look good but it sounds great as well. A little less aggressive than I thought but whoever hears me go WOT gives their mark of approval. I'll post some videos when I get a chance.

BudzZz 07-14-2013 07:21 PM

^^ I actually did look at MXP but I wasn't too sure about quality of sound. How is the MXP? I'm planning to keep my testpipes so I need to combine that with an exhaust that'll give minimum of rasp.

Voice59 07-14-2013 07:31 PM

I like it a lot. I've never had a raspy exhaust so I couldn't tell you if mine is. I do know I like how it sounds a lot. it doesn't drone in the cabin. Hell, if it's a warm start you would barely be able to tell it was on at idle. But on acceleration I've gotten head turns, nods, straight up compliments at lights. So... I'll get a good video posted and I'll let you guys decide.

Voice59 07-14-2013 07:32 PM

It probably isn't as aggressive as the FI or the other ones. I'd say it's a little more aggressive than the Stillen exhaust. But then again I liked the stillen exhaust as well, just wanted something a little more aggressive.

BudzZz 07-14-2013 07:42 PM

I like my exhaust to be loud, aggressive and crisp. I might have to change my testpipes for Art pipes after I choose a new exhaust.
