PPE Long Tube Headers Installed...

I got PPE Long tube headers installed yesterday along with a fidanza flywheel and SS Clutch Line (another awesome mod !!! )... I was supposed to have a dyno and re tune right after but that was delayed until Tuesday. They did take a baseline dyno before the install though so there will be a before/after comparison.. However, My motor was just changed due to OC, so there are variables that could cause a bigger change in power with the retune. But from driving the he car is def quicker than before and I am expecting to see some nice gains. The shop praised the built quality and said the design looked good. Tuesday it is going back on the dyno and getting the tune tweaked, right now I am running very rich, they said 2 points rich at least.

The one pleasant surprise was that my cars exhuast note is actually MUCH cleaner than before. I went from Berk Test Pipes with Stillen Exhaust to these PPE Long Tube Headers and Stillen exhaust. The car is actually quieter at all rpms with a cleaner sound than before with test pipes. There is less rasp but a more aggressive tone (The pitch of the exhaust changed a little.. for the better ). There is still some rasp along with the lovely hiss but it definatly sounds better than before. I was expecting it to get louder and more raspy and they did the oposite...

My headers were coated and I believe go for around 1,000 on PPE's website. I purchased them used off another forum member a few months back. His Nismo is the car posted on PPE's site with dyno charts giving him 20+ whp , but his car was all stock otherwise...

On a side not, the shop had to drop my motor to get them in. They broke sockets and just decided it would be easier to just drop the motor. Driver's side was a nightmare. Mine was the only 370 that they had to drop the motor for (typical luck of mine) , they installed 4-5 sets of FI LTH without dropping it. But the install IS tough for these... The original quote was very reasonable but went up a smidge because of the motor, but still very reasonable. Money well spent. Performance Motorsports installed these...

So Tuesday I will post before/after dyno charts... but keep these in mind if you are contemplating headers. The biggest plus again is how clean the exhaust sounds.

I am super happy with these and do not regret the purchase or install a bit.

Gears, flywheel, headers and tune... You should be moving nicely. We should meet up sometime so I can be jealous of your setup :)

I'm glad to see performance motorsport seemed to treat you well. I'm considering having them do some work with me soon.

Rooskey 05-21-2011 12:13 AM

PPE are step headers. Always gonna be a plus. Step headers give a great all around power curve between torque and hp. You only have to install them once so it seems like a no brainer to me.

advan37 05-21-2011 04:09 AM

Is it crazy loud ??

chuckd05 05-21-2011 09:01 AM

No it's actually quieter than it was before with test pipes at all Rpms. Not sure if that's the case with the FI's but def with these PPE's

nixxer 05-21-2011 10:25 AM

Yeah, LTH's alter the engines acoustics. It actually lowers the volume and resonance compared to TP/HFC's, but at WOT its about the same as TP, if not a smidge louder. Curious to see your before/after plots.

Boost_lee 05-21-2011 12:52 PM

Nice stuff chuck, keep us posted

Mr.Squeeze 05-23-2011 07:29 PM

Nice looking headers

geosZ 05-23-2011 07:34 PM

his car sounds great. took off in front of me like a motha the other day :)

Ron 05-23-2011 11:45 PM

In for updates!

chuckd05 05-24-2011 01:03 AM

back to dyno tomorrow...

I have thrown a code p0850 which is neutral position sensor or something like that.. shop must have left something disconnected or something, have no clue what it means but car drives and behaves normal... I am sure they will take care of it..

will post dyno charts tomorrow evening as long as I get the car back tomorrow...

One_Quick_Z 05-24-2011 05:58 AM

I would agree on the exhaust note changes, I went from Berk Test Pipes to FI long tube headers with HKS exhaust and the tone got alot cleaner and deepend :)

One_Quick_Z 05-24-2011 07:34 AM

I will get one up as soon as I can... sorry I have been a little busy the past two weeks :) The only reason I am on the forums during the day is because I have computer access at work :)

On the plus side I am taking my car to get UpReved Tuned tomorrow morning!

GZ3 05-24-2011 10:32 AM

Does it rasp any chuck?

chuckd05 05-24-2011 12:21 PM

Def. A little bit of rasp ...

I'll get some video at some point.

Ron 05-24-2011 01:23 PM

Hey Chuck, what are there made of, ss?

chuckd05 05-24-2011 11:47 PM

Yea I believe so...

Dynoed and re tuned today... from when the car went in before the LTH until now , the car picked up 20 whp and 8tq...

thats with the LTH, Flywheel, and Polishing up the UpRev Tune...

That def makes me happy... I will post the graphs later tonight or tomorrow

Boost_lee 05-25-2011 12:06 AM

nice gain! and you had TP's before, correct?

chuckd05 05-25-2011 12:12 AM

yea , but my car was running a bit rich before hand... the baseline dyno showed that i was very rich... not sure why...

also the tuner said my car wasnt taking as much timing as some other Zs he did... it would kick it back around 25 where other Zs take 28-29 degrees of advancement uptop..

also vvel adds 7 degrees of timing at idle for some reason.. another thing he said is unique to my car... I have no idea what to make of that though lol

But PPE headers seem to be worth something atleast

you seem to have the same problem Ive been dealing with since last November.
the ECU is pulling timing by 6800-6900 rpm down to 22-25

and during last summer I was getting the same 28-30 ign timing on top 7000+

I know the G37 had some noise problem coming from the VVEL actuator
I'm sure we are getting the same thing but Nissan hasn't seen the same problem on our 370z.

chuckd05 05-25-2011 03:40 PM

How did the g37 guys solve this. If at all ?

there is a TSB about this
apprently from what I have read about the subject , its mostly only a updated Ecu flash .
some reported that nothing changed though....:shakes head:

anyway I just placed my order with PPE for their headers
Stainless Steel 304 instead of the regular steel and Black ceramic coated 1600 F
plus an extra bung for my AFR snesor and a different extended size O2 tube

they are quite expensive !!
without coating they goes 1400 for the SS and only 750$ for the Steel one
I should have them in a month or less if im lucky !

chuckd05 05-25-2011 05:34 PM

nice nice... i should get some kickback for them because I have a feeling there will be more people considering them as well.. lol

I got them used for 550 ... SS dipped... mine were going for around 1200 when I got them,..

christian370z 05-25-2011 09:10 PM

Yeah, I remember seeing those for sale and you definitely got a very good deal. I am still debating headers but the quality of these headers looks to be very good.

Mr.Squeeze 05-26-2011 12:00 AM

I have to admit I do like the way those headers look congrats on the numbers. I am in the market now for some I am trying to decide if I am going to go long tube or short.

Ron 05-26-2011 12:15 PM

Mr.Squeeze can you explain why you would choose one over the other? I am on the same boat but price makes me lean towards short. Thanks!

I already went with the short headers I just placed the order. The reason I did so was because I already have mortordyne ART pipes with a 02 bung in them for my wideband.

If had stock cats on I would have went with the long tube.

Im not him but I am in the same boat as you .

the reason why I placed an order with PPE for their headers is because Im looking for the most gain and staying NA

I already have the shorty header-HFC and/or Test pipe and Im positive that I will get more power with them instead of FI header

The test on the stock Nismo was +23whp +19ft which is alright for the first mod
Then chuckd05 got about +20whp but he also installed his flywheel at the same time ... let say he got half of it, only because of the PPE header.
He had test pipe +stillen catback
I havent seen much or any gain with the stillen headers if you already have HFC/TP and exhaust

also having a steped headers from what I have seen give more power than a conventional headers but at a higher price !

Ron 05-26-2011 01:24 PM

Thank you both for the response. :D

chuckd05 05-26-2011 07:50 PM

SOrry for not posting graph!!!!

I will tonight before I go to sleep....

chuckd05 05-27-2011 02:24 AM

failed.. away until tuesday, Z is packed to the fullest , four day trip to Ocean city, MD

Boost_lee 05-27-2011 04:38 AM

since I have some problem with my Z
Ive been trying to figure out what is the problem and at the same time I found some info about your 7 degres of IGN timing

everything is found in the FSM

the spec are 10+- 5 degree at IDLE

and at the ECU diagnosis Information

IGN TIMING
• Engine: After warming up
• Selector lever: P or N (A/T), Neutral
(M/T)
• Air conditioner switch: OFF
• No load
Idle 7° BTDC
2,000 rpm 25° - 45° BTDC

so my car is Out of spec and even Uprev cannot change my IGN
Im at 0 BTDC at idle and to do the Idle air volume learning there is a sequence to be done and if the basix spec arent met , the procedure cannot be done properly.
:shakes head:

When they said they dropped the motor you should have put a pair of turbos in there!

im sure he would have if you bought him a kit !

chuckd05 05-27-2011 01:55 PM

Haha agreed. I accept any and all donations.

Paypal = g30fizzy@aol.com

Hahaha

tranceformer 05-27-2011 02:00 PM

Screw that, I am taking donations for my own mods!

chuckd05 05-27-2011 10:42 PM

Ok fair enough. Well split them... Now everyone, don't all send them at once!

Mr.Squeeze 05-27-2011 10:59 PM

Lol you guys are crazy, hey chuck I think I saw a picture of your motor on my 350z while it was out at performance.
