Now that I have your attention I will explain why, My last vehicle was a 2004 F-250 power stroke diesel 4x4 lariat crew cab. I had exhaust and a programmer and an AFI intake this was a 6.0 (the one that gets the bad wrap for reasons which do not relate to this post). Ok now my truck dyno'ed after being custom tuned at 450 horsepower and 670 lbs. ft. I never went to the track but my friend with the same truck and tunes ran low 13's pretty crazy for an 8,000lb truck but do some research you will see I am not lying these trucks can cut 1.8 60 foot times easy we simply put it in 4wd HI and brake boost to about 20 pounds of boost and I can out launch anything on the streets (my truck maxed its boost out at about 36 pounds)

Now that you have the history of my truck here is the deal I am a member of a powerstroke forum and I can give you links to at least 10 people who have "dusted" their engine and turbo by using a K&N filter. Dusted means dirt and particles got past the so called "filter" and sand blasted the turbo and engine. I can also give you several pictures if y'all want

I realize this is on a FI application so it is pulling in a ton more air, but it still leads to the point that K&N filters dont filter the air near as good as they claim. I just want to inform people of this because I would hate to see more people getting "dusted"
Now is it 10 people out of lets say 10,000 people? Could this be a loose connection or improper install? If that's the problem, it seems like they need to make some special air filters for "turbo" engines. All my cars had Naturally-aspirated engine and I was always very happy with their performance. They sell millions of air filters all over the world. I have personally never had any problem with their filter in my previous cars.

How many 350Z's have K&N's air filters? I'll bet 8, out of 10 ! Just clean&oil it on a regular basis!

If you look and read carefully at my post you would see I said this was the results of putting it on a F.I. engine which is sucking in a lot more air at a lot higher pressure. Yes these installs were done correctly. I have seen 3 or 4 of these trucks in person with dust and dirt in their intake tubes where we have reinstalled them (including "re-charging" them and such) and double checked.

Again this filter may be substantial for a N/A car but if its not filtering good for a F.I. car why run the risk on a N/A car. I only provided one link because first I don't want to get in trouble for linking to another forum and secondly because I have to get work done here at work and cant spend all day finding the threads in a forum that has over 80,000 of them! I said I can show at least 10 because I have read at least 10 threads that I know of but no I have not documented every time I have seen poor results from K&N filters.

I am only trying to pass on what I have seen in person more times than I think is just a fluke or improper install. Use them if you are happy with them and like like them if you have or plan to go F.I. I would be even more weary. If you want more proof I will post a thread asking for people who have had problems to chime in with pictures and all.

i found this site where a person is the name of bob did his own test on the air filters. K&N oil filter was also used for his testings. check it out yourselves and decide. Filtration Testing for Amsoil, K&N, Napa, Jackson Racing, Baldwin, and Mazda air filters on a Miata

personally i think K&N is really good. basically all the guys at my work have them in their cars, either the intake or the air filters / oil filters. and they have been in business for a very long time. they must know what they are doing.

update on the k&n intake.

so the k&n intakes are not exactly ready yet. i am actually the first 370z they are testing and need a few more 370z to test. i don't want to give out too many information but i will receive a dyno sheet for my stock 370z and i guess i'll post that up here.

Sam, i called too because i live around there. Tell me if everything went well getting your intake installed. I am a little suspicous why they will take a week to give it back to you. It takes about 20 min... But Im thinking that they are going to test your car like a slave, revving it to 7500 or more to see the maximum hp output. Let me know!

well technically there is no real intakes out for the 370z by K&N. they are basically going to run some tests on their prototype models and try to find out how much hp gain there will be.

so in a word, i am a ... or my car is a test subject. i'm not too worried about K&N, they are a reputable company. but with that being said, i will be checking out my car completely once i get the car back this weekend.

like i've posted earlier - they will dyno my stock car. so i am guessing they will try and push the car to the limit and i'm guessing they will dyno the car a few times just to see what numbers they get. but hey, with nothing installed in my car right now, no mods, i still have factory warranty. so really, i'm not at all worried.

edit - i've just googled this, check out the video

Im apprehensive about ever getting another K&N filter. Dyno testing has proved that, most times, theres really a power loss with their filters. And it never helps when all that oil comes off and hits your MAF, throwing off the metering heh...

LS1 guys who were smart, just went with a paper filter...
