I live in california, so I know both are illegal. And i wont need a smog check until 4 years. Thats what i DO know.

One of reason is to have a gain of some Hp and a less restrictive exhaust flow, like it has been advised removing the cats will sound really raspy, and if you go with aftermarket cats your going to have a problem with a Muffler shop touching the one's on the car, it's against the law for them to remove them without something being wrong with them, so if you don't know somebody at a Muffler shop that knows you really good, your going to be doing the work on your own.
