Fawk.... Guess I won't be building a spare engine after all. Wasn't planning on doing the build right away but I would of bought the components for a good price... specially if we would've been able to bundle the rods with the piston...

Who were you going to have build the motor? The biggest thing holding me back is finding someone competent enough to build one locally.

OldBoy 01-28-2014 07:13 PM

Apart from the machining and coatings, I was going to assemble it myself. If you consider Ottawa local, I could inquire for a reputable engine builder in my area. If you're looking at Toronto, your guess is as good as mine lol.

I have no problem going to Ottawa for quality. The alternative was ship the car to the US, or have a short block build and shipped from the US.

Alright, I'll look into it. The gentlemen I deal with for most of my performance parts has been dealing with high end amateurs and pro racing drivers from Calibogie Motorsports and other racing venues for quite a while. I'm pretty sure he could point me in the right direction regarding which engine builder is more reputable/proven.

You're not in a hurry for this info are you? If not, I'll ask him next time I see him in a few weeks.

No hurry. At this point it might be next winters project, unless I smoke my motor before then.

I just knocked on wood for you.

Quick question,
I haven't really done much research into it but I'd figure I would ask since this thread is relevant.

My goal is also 800rwhp (so roughly 1000 at the crank) and I plan to use GT3071 .86 AR turbos. I haven't looked at the maps to see at what psi is most efficient for the turbos so I'm not yet sure what compression ratio would be ideal for E85.

Would 10:1 be the way to go?

G37sHKS 01-29-2014 01:38 AM

If you're using E85 then yes 10 is "OK"

I went with 9.5 and couldn't be happier. didn't feel any low end power lose.

phunk 01-29-2014 02:10 PM

I just ordered my pistons.

2618 alloy, .020 over, 10:1 compression, compatible with HR and VHR heads. HD .250 wall 9310 steel pins. I went with no gas ports and no coatings, although the options are available.

CP does not offer a 4032 alloy piston for the VQ. They feel they are not worth it, as the 2618 is exceptionally stronger.

If anyone wants in, let me know. I have 2-3 days to let them know if the quantity is to be updated.

Without a handful of guys, we are looking at standard pricing... $1200 for the piston set with rings and pins. More if you want coatings ($25 per piston per coating) or gas ports ($16 per piston). The H Beam rods are $1725 a set. If I can get 7 sets of pistons or rods, price drops to $975 on pistons, and $1400 on rods. So that means if we had 4 guys buy pistons, and 3 guys buy rods, the discount kicks in. The pistons could get a little bit cheaper with lesser wrist pins, but I got the strongest/heaviest duty option pin they have.

I know I said the Group Buy is closed... well I guess I mean to say that its closing. We have a couple days to react, but I put my order in for my own engine and wont be revisiting the topic unless people speak up now, ready to mail a check. Pistons have to paid up front because they are custom. Rods can be paid for in 6 weeks when the pistons are done.

Ron 01-29-2014 02:29 PM

Count me in for the rods if we get enough people.

Pro H beam with 3/8 Carr bolts right? NI-VQ37HR>-65886S-06

Pro H Beams, cannot confirm the bolts at this time because he did not mention that there were 2 options. But I told him 8500-9000rpm and 800+ HP etc, I trust him to select the ideal option.

Ron 01-29-2014 02:43 PM

Ok. so between you and me we have a set of pistons and two sets of rods. 4 more sets of either pistons or rods and discount kicks in?

Precisely!

I would possibly be willing to purchase 1 additional set of pistons to keep in stock as I am sure as soon as the group buy was finished someone would show up looking for a set.

BTW pricing I quoted is with checks being made to me, and not including final shipping. PayPal/CC is an option if the buyer wants to take on the fees... but I figure this isnt exactly a RUSH item so mailing a check is a viable option for us.

Ron 01-29-2014 02:49 PM

That doesn't sound to hard to accomplish. We had decent list a couple of months ago...

1. phunk ; 100% in, any time before March.
2. Chuck33079
3. GaleForce
4. tibal
5. cosmogirl (already bought pistons)
6. OldBoy
7. djtodd
8. OMGWTFBBQ

guys?
