It's such a waste when people I drink with mix their 18 year old whiskey with soda. I get it, it's an acquired taste, but we all just have to embrace the flavor at one point. Personally, I prefer to drink it neat or on the rocks, depending on the age. Let's face it, I don't think anyone here wants to be the 40 year old that orders Crown and Coke at the pub. I used to love Crown and Coke by the way, but that was over 10 years ago.

I was drinking Glenfiddich at my cousin's wedding and as usual, it was pretty good. As soon as the bartender busted out the Platinum Label, I forgot all about ol' Glen.

I think I would of forget about it too haha

I'm no expert, though I did start to explore craft beers about 6 years ago and then wine and more lately spirits. My previous experience was just youthful cheapness, so I wanted to kinda grow up my drinking experience and order less like a frat boy and more like a man at the bar, ya know? Part of of that process is just trying out lots of stuff from mixed to straight drinks.

Lafroig really interests me, and I really want to like it. Otherwise Glenfiddich is good. I really plan to continue to explore single malt scotches over the winter again and get back on track!

Maker's I use for anything mixed, though I won't ever mix it with soda/Coke and the like. I'm not in college anymore! It's pretty smooth and solid for a mix. And just not interesting enough alone. Templeton Rye is a quality local one that I can mix or go solo with.

Really, what got me away from scotch and whiskey a year ago was finding the absolute joys of brandy, cognac, and especially: rum. I had never though of rum as anything beyond Captain Morgans, but since then I've explored various smaller shops and I find a good dark spiced or non-spiced rum to be a pure joy to sip alone and not mixed. My favorite has been Oronoco Rum from Brazil followed by Kraken spiced rum or Rumchata in a white russian. (Yeah, Rumchata is cheating, but it's so good...)

Love seeing other people's tastes and preferences, as that always gives me ideas on what to pick up next!

(Updated just to add some fuel to the always-burning discussion in whiskey circles: I *do* prefer ice with or in place of a splash of water in my drink. Purists bedamned!)

just picked up a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue for 50 bucks! an associate at work got it as a present and did not want it, so I offered her 50 bucks and she took it. (before you haters think i took advantage, she knew it was a $200 bottle when she sold it). :)

To each his own I guess. If you're chasing that particular type of drink #7 or SB is the way to go.

It's probably unfair to characterize JD as "bad whiskey," as it's somewhat analogous to calling the 370z a bad car because it doesn't seat four.

If you want a "Tennessee whiskey," JD is the standard. I guess there are a couple others that are limited in availability and recognition, but if you want a tennesee whiskey, #7 or SB are the ways to go. GJ is made as a sweet and super-filtered option to break people in to drinking Jack. GJ is probably the worst commercially available bourbon you can find.

Oh, there's much worse than that. :rofl2: McCormick, Evan Willams, Costco (which is actually made by Beam, but somehow worse than regular Beam)...

There's a lot of bad bourbon out there. I'd argue that the entire Beam line is worse than Jack, but that's personal preference.

You know someone knows scotch much better when they recognize the quality and diversity of the flavor of single malts, but they also realize that many of the best (and better) scotches are well crafted balanced blends that will put many brutish unidimensional single malts to shame.

Having said that, and returning to whiskey sensu stricto, I like a good Irish Whisky over most Scotches any day.

This is probably directed at me since I listed two single malts.

Scotch drinker for 20+ years. I've had many of them, blended and singles. I prefer Lagavulin because of the flavor. There are few blended scotch's that offer that flavor profile, like double black Johnnie, but to me it falls short. I like single malts for their individual distinguishing characteristics. It's harder to grab me with a blended.

Lagavulin is awesome, its my favorite, cant beat it for boldness and peaty taste!

I drink black label.. good balance between taste and $, green is good but starts getting too pricey.

Special Occasions (Too damn expensive otherwise):

http://www.bevmo.com/Media/Images/Pr...sFull/4000.jpg

I've tried this and found it lacking. The price does not match the jump in quality. Crown reserve is ALMOST as good and is a third of the price.

http://images2.backpage.com/imager/u...Red_Box_03.jpg

This is my every day drink of choice depending on the mood:

Woodford Reserve, Macallan 12, and Crown Royal Reserve.

QUESTION: Has anyone ever tried this? I would love to know it's qualities or lack thereof.

Crown Royal is the Budweiser of rye whiskey. Too many varieties and they all taste the same.

saber 11-03-2013 02:35 AM

Four Roses or Bulleit Rye Bourbon...FR neat, Bulleit for making a revolver, old fashioned, or when I'm particularly dangerous, something of a mashup of the two.

Jordo! 11-03-2013 02:54 AM

I prefer Irish whiskey, personally. A bit drier than Scottish whiskey, maybe?

Jameson's is usually what I drink when I dip into whiskey (being more of a vodka man for whatever reason, by nature), but on a budget, I'll take Tullamore Dew.

Like H. Thompson, I also dig Wild Turkey, (but only now and then... :D ).

Oh, fun fact for the beer-o's, (if not already known):
( Click to show/hide )
Beer wort is distilled to produce whiskey.

I'd agree... I drink single malts the vast majority of the time, because I prefer their individual characteristics. I am not a fan of most of the Johnny Walker vintages, and I prefer Chivas Royal Salute to Johnny Blue any day.

Macallan in any vintage is great, I drink the 12-year pretty regularly. The rest are special-occasion drinks.

The Pinch is ok... I can't really characterize it though, as it's been quite a while and I don't remember it all that well.

The last few months I've been pretty hooked on The Balvenie. The Doublewood is awesome... smooth and slightly sweet. The Caribbean cask 14-year is sweeter (rum barrels, you know), but not quite as smooth. Macallan 12 has more body and is a bit darker/richer.

For quite a while I was almost exclusively into Glenlivet and went through a half-gallon a week or so. Since trying out The Balvenie and Macallan, I've been hooked, though. Can't believe it took me 15+ years of Scotch drinking to try Macallan. lol

I visited the Auchentoshen distillery in Glasgow a few years back, and liked it ok at the time, along with their sister brand Bowmore. But now, I can't handle the smokiness/peatiness in much more than very small volume. Same goes for Laphroig. In general, I think the Islays are very peaty, but I'm more of a highland malt kind of guy.

I did buy a bottle of Glenmorangie Signet (at about $200), and liked it very much, but as mentioned above... the jump in price didn't justify the improvement in the whisky. I get The Balvenie Doublewood at anywhere from $48-55/bottle and it is 95% as good as the Glenmorangie Signet.

Big fan of Glenfiddich 18-year, too, but I don't see that around much, and at ~$80/bottle (if my memory serves), I go through it way too quickly to be cost-effective.

I caught myself earlier in the year, when going through a bad breakup for a couple of months, spending more in a month on Scotch than on rent, and one month more than on rent and utilities combined. I've since cut back to maybe around $300 a month or so. lol

:ugh2:

Yeah, I know.... I've got a problem....

I have to be at work too often! lol

YES! RAW! Lol. It's actually really good. It's a traditional way of making a whiskey sour. I've got the same reaction with everyone who hasnt tried it, but once I make the drink for someone, they like it!

1.5oz whiskey (preferably bourbon, but any whiskey will do)
3/4-1.5oz lemon juice (depends how sour you like it)
3/4-1.5oz simple syrup (depends on how much lemon you use;usually put more with less lemon making it sweeter, less with more lemon emphasizing the sour)
1 egg white

1. Shake for 15 seconds with no ice.
2. Shake with ice for 5-10 seconds
3. Strain it in a cup with ice
4. 1-3 squirts of bitters. Orange bitters taste best for me. I've tried straight bitter and preferred orange bitters. I want to try cranberry bitters to experiment.
5. (optional) if you want to get fancy, cut a generous strip of orange zest and stick the ends through a tooth pick with cherries. Use this as a "spoon" and it will give it extremely a flavors.

/Angelo350Z/ 11-06-2013 03:52 AM

^^ I should try this. I like whiskey and I like eggs. Why not, right?

tRidiot 11-06-2013 04:27 AM

Meh... I prefer my whisky to taste like whisky... I don't need any of that other stuff in it.

If my stomach is a bit raw that day, I might put a few drops of water in it... but mostly, it's just neat.

Jack Daniel's is the best in my opinion. Normally where I drink it is in Thailand where I spend most of my time during the year. There are many whiskies to choose from but the prices are much higher than in the USA. Jack is usually about $50 a bottle. But I buy it in a bar and drink it there. When I leave, they put my name on it and I come back whenever and get it and continue.

Whiskey is the only drink I dont like. I dont mind the others. There was one guy that said I gotta try grain alcohol I was like Huh? He was like its good for you. :bowrofl:

Sorry, just not a fan of Jack. I know what you mean though, about buying a bottle overseas, they write your name on it, and you get to go back and finish it. However, I had this one issue with this upscale bar in Manila. I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black for 9K Pesos; yes, about $200 :shakes head:. It was almost closing time, and they said my friend and I either had to finish it, or take it home. Either way, I couldn't leave it at the bar. Naturally we finished it. My friend doesn't really drink that much, so I went from sober to ******* in about 45 minutes. There were a LOT of beautiful Pinays, but f**k that place.

lagavulin 16

i usually partake in a delightful cognac beverage:

Hennessy Privilege
Hennessy VS
Remy Martin VSOP

all are :yum: on the rocks or with a splash of Sprite. the one thing i love about cognac is i can get obliterated one night and wake up feeling like a million bucks the next morning.

whiskey and bourbon are another favorite:

Gentlemen's Jack
Woodford Reserve
Crown Royal

i always mix them with Coke. also very :yum: but if i drink too much, i feel like someone's kicking me in the balls the next morning. :icon17:
