GTM Stage 1 Super Charger Install--Kentmo
Today starts the installation of the GTM SC that I recently acquired.
Not real sure if GTM will offer to help with support , but a couple knowledgeable members have answered a few of my questions. Nice to have good people here that are willing to offer advice! Thank you... Today I installed the Walbro fuel pump, up and running.. Tear down starts sometime this week/ weekend... Pics when I get to the interesting parts.... BTW... When the smoke clears, I'll have unused Berk HFC's and a Gen III CAI that has less than 500 mi. up for sale .... I purchased these items before I got the lamebrain idea to do an SC upgrade..... :rofl2: |
Just take the install slow and double check stuff, but once it is done & tuned you will love it!

Nice to see you take this on, in for the progression:)

Most of the tear down is completed, so far fairly simple. Need to remove the existing oil cooler then I'm close to the SC installation.
I'll complete the fuel injector install today then start running the cooler lines. After that the SC . |

I know what part you're talking about under the skid plate and that all gets replaced. I just took a dremmel and cut the hard lines so I could get them out more easily
|
I did remove the "suspension member stay" plate and the engine did not end up on my head. :roflpuke2:
That allowed me to remove the old power steering lines & install the new ones with no trouble. Everything is working out well so far. I'm adding a Mocal inline oil cooler thermostat ,which will connect to the Setrab oil cooler, so I'll need to make up some braided lines. Probably will work on that before the SC install. |

Moving right along.. Sc installed today. Had to drop the front sway bar to make room for the sc., The directions from GTM are very good , but one definitely needs mechanical experience to get through the install. Having the correct tool are ESSENTIAL!!!Attachment 98472

I have the SC, alternator , P S pump & belt installed.
I'm not happy with how the new PS & SC lines are crammed between the alternator & passenger side wall. Very little room and I'm concerned about heat & chaffing of the lines & wires. I think a redesign with solid tubing that runs along the side wall would be more efficient. I may look into trying to do that down the road. In the mean time I'll be wrapping the hose and wiring with a heat shield aluminum tubing to protect those parts. Attachment 98592 Attachment 98593 |
Looking good man :)

Thanks :)
Hard to tell though from the sh!!ty pic quality...:) |

Attachment 98662 Moving right along.. |
:) Nice ,What that's fine just drill a hole through the cooler, LOL Good work around tho!
|
I envy the do it yourself guys that tackle projects like this! Anything more than working on headlights or exhaust and I'm into unfamiliar territory haha!
What are you hoping to throw down for numbers and are you sticking her on a dyno? |

Thanks, I'm enjoying this Supercharger project alot.
I spent 4 years on my 280z Spyder project. That happened over 10 years ago. Attachment 98674I cleaned or replaced EVERY part on that car... Not so motivated to clean everything so meticulously on this project tho... Just making sure the mechanicals that I'm installing are absolutely correct. Hoping to see about 400~425 rwhp...??? I have a tuner lined up who has a dyno. Will post results when that happens. I still need to have someone install my Stage 3 clutch and FI exhaust before I do the tune. Not too long before I'm ready to do the tune though.. Getting close. |

Ran into my first major issue. The intercooler bolt holes do not fit the bolt up tabs of my frame. About 2" too short. I made a couple brackets to bolt it up , but I now worry about how the plumbing will line up. Mainly the intakes to the throttle bodies. If this works out I'll try to make a more substantial bracket to eliminate side to side movement.

Attachment 98808 Attachment 98810 Attachment 98811 Attachment 98812 Major pain in the a$$ installing the cold air intakes to the intercooler. The intakes were not even close to fitting. I had to use longer silicone connectors and 45* connectors. Even using those the fittment was very difficult. My Z is a Roadster and apparently the frontal frame is different from the Coupe??? Next is the oil cooler install using custom braided lines and that should complete the install. Sam from GTM called me the other day and sent the ECU flash codes. Getting close now!!! |
you shouldn't have lowered the intercooler. That's why the outlet pipes fit like poop. can you remove the brackets you made and make something to make up the gap on the bottom? you'll likely have a better fitment that way.
|
The intercooler rests on tabs that are premolded on the bottom side. Raising everything up would have caused a more diffiult problem with the lower plumbing geometry. Plus it would have been less stable.
|
Looks good BUT your killing me with the upside down pics LOL,
BTW where are the MAF's stock location ? |
I'm really digging that 280z you have. Beautiful color on it!
|
Looking good man, keep it up..
|
Thanks for the compliments! Doing the SC install.... easy...
Getting my pics to upload right side up... way beyond my capabilities!! The MAF sensors are located just under the equator of the CAI tubes. |
TeaCH ME!!
|
I can help with learning how to do the complicated uploading of pictures

Started the car up!!!!! Everything looked good, had a leaky SC hose at the reservoir. Other than that no other leaks. This baby sucks in some air... Really whistles.. Idles good ,though it had a hiccup ...
Can't drive yet.. 9" snow out there... Then an appointment with the tune guys. Gonna be a bad a$$ Roadster!! |
Nice!!

I have decided to eliminate my stock cats. I just installed FI cat back w/ 14" resonators.
That's loud enough for me. I want to run Berk test pipes w/ resonators but am wondering if the resonator test pipes would be too restrictive for my Sc ??? |
Nice man !! What no start up VID, LOL , Yea the sound of the SC is intoxicating for sure, I loved the sound of mine when I had it ( Stillen) BTW not sure how different the GTM kit is but Stillen told us to keep the stock cats on the car ? Cars actually lost WHP with TP's .
|
I don't think it would be. Isn't it a straight through design? There shouldn't be any packing in there. Man you must be itching to get her out on the open road!!! Look forward to some numbers!

The issue with HFC & I believe RTP is they will break down and could clog the exhaust where stock cats, LTH, and TP do not have this issue. LTH & TP are just straight pipes & stock cats versus HFC have better heat control that do not break down as quickly. I remember a few places talking about making better HFC that can withstand the heat of boost, but nothing ever materialized from it that I remember. |
Just ordered the berk resonated test pipes. Once i get those it's tune & dyno time!!
I'll try to do a dyno video and will post results. Just finished running the wiring & hose for the boost & AFR meters. Gawd I hate doing that type of install. My body doesn't contort into the positions to that I need to get under the dash.... Plus trying to get through the fire wall etc.. PAIN IN ***.... Found a place to make a hole next to the in cabin air filter to run the wires & vacuum hose. |
Check that... cancelled the Berks, they're back ordered forever, ordered the Fast Intention resonated pipes instead... over priced , but... want to keep things moving..
|
Did you even look into the Z1 Tp's I have their HFC's and IMO better than FI's I had FIRHFC's also but the Z1's are better just my.02

What you need is non-resonated test pipes and a set of these 100 cell cats http://www.the370z.com/members/zat_z...cell-twins.jpg Ask Tony, for some ;) |
Actually I may even have some exhaust pieces, left over, that I ran with my 1.0 kit and I reached 12 lbs of boost
|
I actually sent Z1 a question asking the lead time on their resonated test pipes.
Their answer to me was : "Did you place an order?" That was all they wrote in reply. What kind of answer is that? When I was looking into upgrade clutches , I emailed Z1 for final pricing on what I needed, they said they would put a number together and get right back with me. I never heard back ... They lost about $2k worth of business due to their lack of customer service. On the other hand, Joe from Z speed, Kevin from Fast Intentions and Todd from Vivid Racing have been very accommodating and professional. Kudos to them!!! |
