Based on the photos, it appears a combination of hot-spots in the wiring from the amperage the larger pump was pulling melted some of the wiring. The 2 crimps look like they got toasty, along with the connections where the spades meet the fuel tank flange terminals. Junction points in wiring are commonly the bottleneck if you are not careful to get an extra-fantastic amount of surface area contact.
