Stillen SC kit recommended upgrades?

So everyone knows the Stillen kit has some shortcomings. It is also the only CARB approved kit on the market. I know these things will void the CARD legality, but realistically, if you have a CARB map o pass smog, no one's going to know if you did anything that wasn't originally in the kit if you're pulled over so as long as you have the sticker or plate or whatever, you should be fine.

I believe some of the issues are cooling, some plastic parts and obviously the need for an custom tune. It would be great if those who have experience with the kit or are just knowledgeable in general to supply the community with recommended upgrades to the Stillen kit that aren't too $$$ so people can know what extra costs to expect and plan/decide accordingly if this is a route they want to take.

I'll start with some I have read in other threads and add what others post:

1. Custom tune
2. Upgrade impeller OR pulley
3. Upgrade TurboSmart 25mm BOV
4. upgrade plastic cog pullies
5. Frozenboost heat exchanger
7. Transmission cooler (especially for 7AT)
8, braided steel fuel line

He has a legit question. Leave the trolling for Stillen thread.

Be careful, the impeller and pulley has ended in some blown motors! For me the custom tune was a must but they have changed their tune so it may not be needed. With that said you will most likely get more power with a custom tune. That is the only thing I have done on your list. If you track the car start thinking cooling cooling cooling!

Was just going to say the same thing as JWillis, I wouldn't upgrade both ! either one or the other and then you still in that "Maybe" in pop range. The custom tune you will still pass emissions BTW I did in Mass, The "old" and say old cause still "says" they have addressed their can tune issue, But their old can tune was crap and super rich. The custom tune just leans it out and changes some timing , Nothing that would make you fail emissions. If I go this way again the only thing I'm doing is a tune and the frozen-boost heat exchanger

Great thread with some details and insights: http://www.the370z.com/forced-induct...aded-kits.html

I plan to add these details to the FI info thread so it is all in one location place.

I would suggest upgrading the heat exchanger to the frozenboost front mount which is a very simple install and not only looks awesome but really helps a lot with cooling. I also swapped my spark plugs to GTR ones which are also recommended but don't come with the Stillen kit. I dont feel the need to upgrade injectors either since you will probably want to stay with the 8psi pulley and I wouldn't recommend swapping the impeller unless you plan to upgrade injectors/UPREV GT MAF along with it but at that point comes the higher risk and expense of reliability which will ultimately be based on the tuning. I personally wanted to keep it as safe as possible so I did the following.

1. Stillen SC with 8psi pulley (Had the 9psi but went back to 8)
2. Turbosmart Dual Port BOV (For Sound :) wanted to replace the standard Bosch unit)
3. Frozenboost Heat Exchanger (Added Cooling)
4. Stillen 25 row oil cooler (Cooling)
5. GTR Spark plugs
6. Stock cats per Stillen's recommendation (Had FI RHFC's but went back to stock cats)
7. Custom Uprev tune (Highly recommended)

Since you're auto I would advise to also get a tranny cooler.

There's nothing more to say!
Thanks guys

If you want more power and information, then wait until next spring.
Then I can report here.....:tiphat:

The OP seems to value the CARB cert, which GTM never got.

brucelidat 11-12-2014 12:59 PM

Yes, CARB plus I am a little worried about support from GTM considering their situation. But I also created this thread so people considering the Stillen kit would know and be able to plan for needed support/upgrades for it.

On the GTM side of things, 90% of items can be acquired without needing GTM if a part needs to be replaced.
But on the CARB side, Stillen is the only option currently.

Can you keep the crarshbar when go to the front mount frozen boost inter cooler? Any firmest issues etc when upgrading to this part?
