S&R Performance single turbo kit?
Anyone seen the momentum single turbo kit from S&R Performance in Tampa, FL? A buddy of mine is considering going single turbo in his 370 and I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about them before he throws money away if its junk. Theyre claiming 500+ whp on the single turbo. Anyone have any experience?
|
Actually they are building my long block for my TT setup. I did plenty of research before choosing them to do the build and I have nothing but positive things about VSR. They used to be s&r.. Call and talk to bobby..
|
They made a great front mount single kit for the 350.
|
Momentum Performance never made a 370Z kit. They are now out of business and do not exist. Their one and only kit was designed and intended for a 350Z/G35 DE platform. S&R makes their own single turbo kits for the 370Z. They may be modifying a Momentum Kit to fit the 370Z, but it is definitly NOT specific 370Z kit.
If this is the kit you are referring to it is a "S&R" kit...not Momentum. http://www.sandrperformance.com/SR-3...it-_p_897.html |
Gotcha. I may have gotten my info crossed. Either way, from the two other replies, looks like they're a good shop...
|
That's the top mount kit? I'm not crazy about the turbo location and plumbing, but people who have bought it seem to love it.
They're the ones who built Isamu's car, right? |

Adding turbo heat to an engine bay that already has enough heat wouldn't be my first choice to place it but you can't knock results. |
The worst part of that kit is the fact that the turbo sits directly under the intake charge pipe on the drivers side. This directly heats the pipe up and raises intake temps even more than they already are from heat soak of the bay.
Also, depending how they route the recirc pipe, that had a bit of problems also. On mine (powerlab) it hung to the passenger side and was susceptible to undercarriage scrape. I was forced to go over a new speed bump when in line for Six Flags and it put so much pressure on the recirc pipe that it cracked my wastegate clean off of the crossover pipe. |
Your right that's why the turbo is Heat Wrapped. Not saying that will stop all of the heat but that kit is proven...

S&R has proven to be a solid kit, these are the known finished builds:
Isamu: 2010 370z Nismo 6MT S&R at 8.6PSI - 520HP & 404TQ Nissan370: 2009 370z 6MT VSR Turbo at 10PSI - 523HP & 460TQ FireDan50: 2009 370z 6MT VSR Turbo at 10PSI - 611HP & 517TQ regulator11: 2009 370z 6MT VSR Turbo at 8PSI - 498HP & 426TQ Hollywood6973: 2013 370z 6MT VSR Turbo at 10PSI - 520HP & 431TQ |
Why does Firedan's have sooooo much more power?

I'm debating on selling my gtm TT kit and going with theirs and upping the boost just to see what it can do on a built motor...

Nissan370 has a built motor and is doing break in now with the VSR kit and about to retune it for more boost. Link: http://www.the370z.com/forced-induct...ted-turbo.html |

I also had a turbo blanket on my turbine, Ive never seen one on the compressor though which is only an inch or so away from the intake pipe. I almost cut my throttle body off and welded it to the other side of the intake plenum so that the intake pipe wouldn't sit over the turbo. I removed my drivers side wheel well guard to get more air to pass by the turbo and get it out of the bay. This also allowed you to hear the turbo spool more which is always a bonus. Where BP places theirs just makes a whole lot of sense to me. They also state 650+ on that setup. However, May would be the earliest for that route now. |

PS. Never heard that before the blanket was on. |

It is simply crucial to have a large T4 turbine on these engines, and the test result I did last year have confirmed this. IMO anything smaller than a true T4with large A/R ratio, will generate excessive exhaust back pressure (exhaust pressure between heads and turbine inlet), greatly reducing efficiency and high HP potential. The turbine becomes a huge choke point if not sized properly, and the power will simply dive. Any time you see a dyno graph where TQ is lower than max HP (or if the two are even getting close), it is a good indicator that the turbine has reached its maximum flow limit. Remember, all that air the compressor pushes out is mixed with fuel and ignited....all this has to go through the turbine housing. |

I drive really slow through my neighborhood, pretty much at idle since im on a slant, which takes a minute at least. But again, I did this same thing without the blanket and never once heard the oil boiling. As soon as i put it on I noticed it that same day. |
Why would a setup like this have any left over oil in the turbo. Shouldn't gravity drain it all back to the pan?
|
Im not sure. Maybe it could have been coolant burning too since it is coolant and oil cooled. Or whatever doesn't drain out, whats left along the sides, just boils.

Bobby is putting this kit on for me next Monday at the shop. Already put the deposit down. I'll post the Dyne charts and vids here for you if you're still considering it.
|
Hey man while your there see if you can snap some pics of my motor they are building for me...

Not a problem. Wish I'd posted yesterday as I was at the shop for about 5 hours getting my oil cooler reattached after my own new engine drop. Does bobby know your alias on this site or do you want to pm me your name? |
He knows my name on here.. Oh and thanks!

He said the turbo didn't cause it. He had detonation due to another issue.
|
Yes guys , it was not the turbo that caused the boomboom.
|
Well I'm planning on doing a Full review on my motor they are building soon enough. I only hope I don't have issues down the road but time will tell. So far the communication with bobby has been pretty good.
|
I personally don't like the design of the VSR turbo kit, but its a proven kit, I'm just weary of having an intake pipe so close to the turbine like that.

But as usual single turbo > twins ;) |
