Stillen supercharger long term reports

I am hoping that this thread will serve as a repository of knowledge dedicated to the Stillen Supercharger on the VQ37 platform.
Information I believe will be valuable to readers of this thread include:
1. Date of install
2. Model year of car
3. Model of car G37 vs 370Z
4. Problems at install
5. Late problems - including mileage at which they occurred and nature of problem
6. Stillen's actions relevant to warranty
7. Upgrades and modifications to the kit - including modifying the UpRev tune
8. Max HP achieved - and how - UpRev tune, increased PSI (smaller diameter pulley), etc.
9. Additional mods - Exhaust, clutch, etc
10. Current miles on kit
11. Would like to know the max HP any one has achieved with the Stillen Kit
12. Most miles anyone has achieved with the kit.

swiss370Z 01-31-2013 12:37 PM

First in...

1. Date of install (April, 2011, 6'000 miles)
2. Model year of car (2010)
3. Model of car G37 vs 370Z (370Z)
4. Problems at install (NO)
5. Late problems - including mileage at which they occurred and nature of problem (NO)
6. Stillen's actions relevant to warranty (Just Perfect)
7. Upgrades and modifications to the kit - including modifying the UpRev tune (Custom UpRev Osiris)
8. Max HP achieved - and how - UpRev tune, increased PSI (smaller diameter pulley), etc. (V3 Sci Pulley from a Factory from Germany)
9. Additional mods - Exhaust, clutch, etc (STILLEN Headers, Invidia 200 Cellcore, Akrapovic Evolution)
10. Current miles on kit (14'000)
11. Would like to know the max HP any one has achieved with the Stillen Kit (300 HP original --> now 500HP) Dyno follows..
12. Most miles anyone has achieved with the kit. (still on the road..)

Greetings from "the other side of the World"

Good observation!

Nissan370 01-31-2013 04:29 PM

09' 370z
Stillen kit installed aug 2011
Max hp 432rwhp @ 7500 rpms
Max tq 340rwtq @ 5200 rpms
Max boost 10psi on 9lb pulley

Other mods

Ark exhaust
Random tech high flow cats
Built motor 9.1cr

Total miles on kit less then 3500 miles

Kit being replace with s&r single turbo kit

Why I am happy with the power the kit made but I want. More and I can't get there with out doing a lot of mods to the kit
Also the water to air intercooler is not that great and it gets very very hot in summer adding more power will only make that worst

irondoc 01-31-2013 04:30 PM

Thanks swiss370Z. Just as a curiosity, have you been retested for Swiss emissions control standards? Since all of the mods were completed?

Hello irondoc

Here in Switzerland, we have no chance with HFC to pass the emissions test!
The "Z" comes with the original catalysts by controlling.
With a new car, the official exhaust emission test for the first time
after 4 years are made, then every 2 years.

by the way...

For the official entry in the Swiss-papers we had to install even in the original exhaust system! (You know how quiet it is?:icon14:)

Why:
The Nissan was too loud for the test with my first FOX- exhaust system!

:vuvuzela:

irondoc 02-01-2013 08:52 AM

Shamu - NICE....
Do you happen to have numbers from before the headers?

wifedrivenZ 02-09-2013 08:29 PM

I must be doing something wrong because I can't get the numbers like you guys. I am thinking about removing my test pipes and see how it works.

Shamu is running PPE long tubes and a Litespeed exhaust that has no mufflers. Idk what other Voodoo he has going on, but he's making 50whp more than anyone else I've seen on a Stillen kit lol.

elperuano 02-10-2013 12:21 PM

Lol, could also be the dyno being used... Unless u guys r all using the same dyno it will vary from dyno to dyno.

LOL...........Voodoo, huh? Those are very impressive numbers. What did you decide on SS? You going SC or Turbo?

Check my sig, got a build thread going, unfortunately... I'm waiting on the new build to start, supposedly this month.

Dynojets are pretty consistent, so I'm thinking, a +/- 3% variance in the numbers, and it's still pretty good.

Oh snap. I guess I should have read your sig first. I think you are going to have more of a beast that you anticipated on you hands with that build. I am interested in the maintenance requirements with that system as well.

SS_Firehawk 02-10-2013 01:11 PM

Should be fun. I want to buy some short tails and slap it on my Tanabe mid pipe just to see what it would sound like haha. I would have a completely modular exhaust system then. Mounting points on the mid pipe are same as stock, which means some interesting combinations lol. Anyways, I'm getting off topic.

roplusbee 02-10-2013 01:26 PM

Word. Sorry for the distraction...........

Anyone else with some Stillen goodness?

dansracing 02-13-2013 12:12 PM

Mine should be on by the end of next week and I will have some data to enter.

Nut_N_Much 02-14-2013 01:00 PM

:iagree: same here. I have bad things about Stillen Service, Vortex rules, they fixed what Stillen couldn't. Should be installing soon, then I'll have some data for ya!

Can you be more specific about how Stillen failed for you?

Dude were do I start?
1. Customer service doesn't call back.
2. Customer service doesn't no anything about the kits they sell.
3. Customer service will refer you to a tech for everything.
4. Tech doesn't fallow through on your orders, so no call back or shipment.
5. It took a week just to find out the belt sizes.
6. I filed a Better Business Complaint and got a call from Service Manager to work out the complaint. I sent detailed pictures of what I need, didn't get a call back, 4 days later I call. Still no action, need tech to figure it out.
7. 2 weeks working with Service Manager, still no drive pulley.

I still need the F__ing pulley and still F__ing don't have it. Vortex sent what they thought it was but its not right size. All I need is the Stock Pulley sounds easy but Stillen can't do it!!!

Anyone have a stock drive pulley on the impeller side of the SC that takes the belt that runs the Alt, PS, etc. of the SC. I'll give you a cheese burger for it!!! This is what has been holding me up on my install.

Attached are the pictures i sent; what I thought was the pulley is to big. The Kit is good after swapping out plastic BOV and Idler pulley.

That is all without a doubt unacceptable. I can tell you that customer service has been responsive for me, but I have always just gone back to the salesman who sold me the kit. So that is the good. The bad is I am also having a minor tune issue. Seems to be a lesser version of what Shamu reported.

Under hard acceleration, not necessarily WOT, but still pushing it she runs fine. With casual driving she seems to both hesitate and surge between 2800rpm and 4000. Above and below those numbers she runs fine.

One of their techs - Sam Camarillo - has a Cipher run from me and is working on it, but after 4 days when I got impatient he stated, "Still looking at data. Will have to dig deeper as I haven’t seen this before."

So the good thing is they are working on it.
I will update.

Gotta wonder, does any one have an FI kit on their Z (from any vendor) that installed and ran flawlessly from Day1?

I'm having this exact same issue. Had my tuner data log it while i was driving the car...says the MAF's voltage is fluctuating a whole voltage up and down like it doesn't know what to do. Mine is occurring around 2900-3200rpm (normal cruising rpm) But when i'm on the accelerator the symptom goes away. Prior to upgrading my bypass valve, the issue occurred at a higher rpm range 3500-4000rpm. The theory is that it is air turbulence on the MAF's and/or poorly designed reciruclation tube where it connects back into the main tube going into the blower. The recirculation tube right now basically T-bones into the main tube when ideally it should curve into it facing the blower.

But as of now, i have no solution. The shop i take my car to wants to extend the pipes before the MAF's to see if that would help. So if you find a solution, please let me know.

chrisgordillo 02-18-2013 12:35 PM

Im happy with mine. 410whp and 305wtq. Everything else is stock except a stage 2 exedy clutch. I smoke vets, M3's, etc... I have about 7,000 miles on it so far.

I agree. I test drove two 2010 Z06's before I bought my Z. When I first drove it after having the Stillen SC installed the first word to describe the power that came to mind was "brutal."
I have no complaints about the power this kit produces. My only issue now relates to drivability.

you can build a air box that should fix the problem. I took some thin aluminum from lowes and bend it around the front crash bar under the filters and up around the back of it. I did this and do not have any problems at all. this will prevent direct air from entering the filters and causing the MAF's from getting a bad reading.

kellyefields,
What led you to make this airbox? Were you having the same drivability problems as we are describing here?

Can you provide photos of the solution you came up with?
Thanks.

do you have a pic?

Osiris 02-19-2013 09:34 AM

also, i know there's a shroud that comes with the kit already that blocks air flow. But i'm assuming yours is larger and placed differently? And as irondoc stated, did you also experience these symptoms?

kellyefields 02-19-2013 09:53 AM

I dont have a pic at the moment but think of a u shaped piece of paper ruffly that size. the problem I had was my kit did not have the shield. I would then have problems where my car would go into a limp mode of sorts. I would be driving fine around 65 or so and as soon as I would slow down and my rpms drop under 3k I would not be able to go above 3k like a valet mode of sorts. would have to shut the car down for 30 seconds and restart. It would also throw multiple misfire codes and banks to rich on the dash. I was finally able to dignose it when doing the retune with their high speed fan and it would have the MAF jumping all over the place if the car was not under load but under load it was fine. we placed a box in front of the filters and it solved the problem, so I came up with this air box and have never had a problem. gets pleanty of air when it needs it and no direct airflow when it doesnt.

good idea with the high speed fan...question (and maybe a silly one), did you have the bumper on or off when testing with the fan?

Osiris 02-19-2013 11:07 AM

also, can you maybe draw a picture just so we can get an idea of the size and placement?

the bumper was on and this was with the stock bumper not the one I have now. as far as a pic of it think of a piece of paper. fold it 3 inches from the top, then fold it again 5 inches from the first fold, hold it up and you should have a U shape. (not exact numbers just an example) take it and slide it up the front side of the crash bar and this is where you are going to attach it. the back is just free. the sides are left open to allow air to be sucked in when needed. Place it so the bottom covers the bottom of the first filter this is where I assume the problem is because it gets the most direct air flow. the top of the filters do not need to be covered since they have the plastic tops that will deflect any direct air. as long as the bottom covers the bottom of the filters it will work. Once I take the bumper off in the next couple of weeks I will post a pic.

Yea will need a pic. The problem is that the shroud that i have on mine sounds a lot like what you are describing, yet i still have the issue. So i need to compare the dimensions and placement of the two.

Right, sounds like just a larger shroud. Less turbulence altogether.
I think the real problem probably relates to the MAF's being out in front of the radiator and a larger shroud being required to further dampen turbulence at least at the MAF's.

I wonder if the different types of noses on these cars will make differences in the MAF performance?
It sounds like the shroud just deflects forced air from hitting the filters, mainly the bottom one and forces the SC to suck calm air.

As I understand from my communication with Stillen, reducing turbulence at the filter is only important as it may reduce turbulence at the MAF's. If you look closely at the kit the distance from the filter attachments to the MAF slots is less than 2 inches. I believe this set up is unique in the world of 370Z CAI's.

When my car ran without the shroud it would stall on decel (clutch in or in neutral) - every time. The shroud stopped the stalling but now there is this driveability problem. Of note the included Stillen shroud does not fit on the 2013 model (sport touring) so it had to be heavily modified.

I think I will have to do some work this weekend and make a much larger shroud to completely shield the filters and MAF's.

Possible to just make the inlet tube longer before the MAF?

You could also insert a honeycomb air straightener..

So, the shop where i take my car had actually suggested modifying this configuration to increase that distance between the filters and the maf's. But i haven't talked to them about the whole shroud conversation yet.
