Carb approved kits for California

I've been wanting to supercharge my Z, but I live in California. In the initial press releases from both GTM and Stillen there was mention of a carb approved kit planned. Is there any news on these kits? Are they in the process of being approved? If so how much longer will it take? I've searched the forums on this but haven't been able to find anything current.

i have a feeling all that went out the window, but i hope im wrong!..... Texas is trying to copy yalls EPA sh1t...... only a matter of time for us.

come on electric and flux capacitor super cars! :P

Nixlimited 08-31-2011 12:21 PM

I personally don't think it's going to happen. CARB approval is a pain in the *** to get and it costs these companies money to pursue. However, there are more than enough willing customers to buy non-CARB kits. Don't get me wrong, I live in CA and would love CARB approval, but I have learned to live with the idea of getting rid of my car every few years and starting over to avoid CARB nonsense. I had to sell my STI in Texas before moving back to CA because of CARB.

theDreamer 08-31-2011 12:24 PM

I know GTM was going through a third party company who handles all of it to get a kit approved. The issue is you have to have everything complete, install guide, tune, paperwork, etc.

weiboy718 08-31-2011 12:39 PM

Not only that, you will probably have like 350-375whp to be carb legal. Might as well stay N/A

gleonard 08-31-2011 05:08 PM

I wonder how many people here have had problems getting busted with illegal set ups? Would the STS rear mounted turbo be easier to revert back to stock for the smog checks?

Kyle@STILLEN 09-07-2011 09:01 PM

No difference at all. Currently we only have the one pre-tuned offering. Our focus has been on achieving the warranty and CARB legality. Now that we have accomplished those goals we will begin working on the higher horsepower packages. The CARB kit is our standard 8 psi kit.

I see you're in Los Angeles, if you'd like to come down for a test ride I'd be happy to give you a ride in one of our cars. Just shoot me an email and we can schedule a time that works for you. My email is kmillen @ stillen.com

Can't wait to see what options you guys come up with Kyle. I still have not pulled the trigger on getting a custom pulley cut after we last talked, been too busy with work. I think I will wait for a while to see what comes down the pipe from your R&D.

Actually depending on the car, conditions, dyno, etc. most are 395-420whp with the CARB kit.

And with an optional drivetrain warranty available, with $8,000 of coverage, those looking for that extra bit of security in their back pocket can have it.

shumby 09-07-2011 11:40 PM

HOw much to replace a blowen engine from knock? $8000?

Josh@STILLEN 09-07-2011 11:45 PM

If you followed the story you're mentioning, there was a bad injector at play it would seem.. :) and it didn't blow Weiboy's engine.. you're just :stirthepot:..

It's been a while Shumby, hope things are good with you up north! Or are you in the middle of nowhere again? lol

To be nice I'll leave my post out of the announcement on this site. I'll just say that reading your announcement just makes me laugh. Proclaiming you are the leader in Nissan/Infiniti product development and first to provide a forced induction solution is a stretch from the truth.

Nice work on getting the CARB approval, but that's really for California guys that care about that stuff. You guys are nice guys so hopefully no hard feelings but the hype over CARB approval should be just that...the rest can be left out it just begs people like myself to say something.

I remember goin to hot import nights and watching the cops "sniff" cars as they drove by. They were like flies on sh*t. I know in texas you don't have to worry abotu that but here in cali its worth getting instead of rippin everything off your car to solve a "fix it" ticket. I think you should open mouth and insert foot home boy!

hdskull 09-08-2011 03:59 AM

^yeah, heard of people who put in their TT's only to be ref'd a few months later... ouch, all that labor cost!

I think you are missing my point...home boy. I said the CARB approval is a good thing. Only people from California people really need something like that so to make it some big OH MAN WE ARE THE **** WE ARE LEGAL EVERYWHERE NOW and the other stuff about being industry leading and "first" is not necessary. It's all hype.

What kind of countless hours of exhausting work was needed to be "legal" in all the other 49 states? And seriously...improving the supercharger tuning was put on hold to get the CARB approval taken care of? I'm pretty sure there are more than just 5 guys working at Stillen. Seems like there is a whole team of engineers, I would think they'd be able to accomplish both!

Again, my point was just to post that you got your CARB approval and that's it...the rest is BS.

If you don't think people look at the CARB cert outside of Cali, you are mistaken. Even if you don't have to have it, you still get the benefit of knowing that your car can pass anywhere. Also, Cali is probably the biggest market for used sales when you want to move on. CARB is a big deal. I remember high end places like JWT trying for years to get this back in the 350Z days....and failing.

Well I certainly wasn't trying to say that nobody cares about it outside of California, but I am definitely one that doesn't go purchase a car down the street and wonder if it's CARB approved. It's obviously a matter of opinion who cares and who doesn't. The nice thing is that it's CARB approved now...but all they fluff around it was what I'm pointing out.

roy'sz 09-09-2011 03:11 AM

Who else had a carb approved kit other than this one?

roy'sz 09-09-2011 03:21 AM

took the liberty to google it. Only saw results for stillen.....so....yeah! But for the record, if I did live in a state that didn't require it, best belive not 1 part would be carb legal lol.

FYI, did a little reaserch and found this...

"Currently, 16 other states have either adopted, or are in the process of adopting, California's strict emissions standards. These states include New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Maryland, Florida, and several others."

link: HowStuffWorks "CARB"

I had no idea anyone else had adopted these standards yet.

Nixlimited 09-09-2011 12:40 PM

My issue with CARB is the methodology of enforcement. I am all for cleaner air and such, but then why don't you measure my emissions rather than failing me because I have changed something? For example, a CAI may have absolutely no effect on my emissions, or I may still be well within allowed emissions, but I am going to fail just because I put the part on? That's crap, and it has no rational relation to the end goal, which is improving air quality. If I had it my way, what you did to your car wouldn't matter so long as you passed the emissions test, since that's what actually matters. In the mean time, CARB just kills innovation and small businesses that want to sell parts to car enthusiasts. Fortunately, enough of us are willing to ignore CARB to keep shops in business.

I've heard stories that Texas is considering it as well. I personally think the cleaner emissions is a must have, so maybe one day I'll have to suck it up and just get rid of my toys...but first I'd like to see them be stricter on not allowing some of these old beat up clunkers that you see black smoke coming out the back. There are so many lazy, neglectful people out there on the road, more so then there are people like us who have a nice new car with performance mods on them, that don't take care of their vehicles and run them into the ground and pollute the air worse than us.

Sam is working on it, but as does everyone, he has to prioritize his time. I would tell you what he told me about some of the really minor **** he has to deal with when getting the CARB approval, but it's not my place to tell. It just goes to show the amount of headache and detail that goes into this approval process.

Agreed. I think law enforcement in Cali uses CARB as an excuse to go after performance enthusiasts . No way they are polluting more than the average mid 90's junker car out there. If CARB was about what it's supposed to be about, tailpipe monitoring would be all they would do. In Texas, they just hook up an emissions monitor and you pass or fail, simple as that.

Why were you bashing Stillen earlier in this thread for having CARB approval and going on about how it's irrellevant if you don't live in California, but then go on to make excuses for why GTM didn't have CARB approval.

I know this thread is something like 5 months old, but I went to GTM's website and it still doesn't look like their kit has CARB certification.

Something like 80% of the US population lives in areas that do have emissions testing and inspection. The CARB sticker will get you through any of those inspections.

Gota laugh at the fanboys...
I posted in the GTM thread twice regarding the CARB approval.
First post was ignored, follow up post was deleted.. I had only asked how many GTM kits had previously been CARB certified.

Smoke & Mirrors..

They recently posted that all their parts have been approved. I can definitely see it happening. It is a slow and arduous process, unfortunately.

I take it you have to go through all the same BS if you put a turbo on as well? Glad I live in the mid west....fewer people means fewer BS rules

Turbo system will simply not be approved in cali. I remember JWT trying for years to get their twin turbo on the 350Z approved, don't think it ever happened.

Damn that sucks...Just don't under why they have to be so anal about modding the car. As long as we don't remove the catalytic converter then we're golden in Missouri...at the same time if you know the right people...inspection....we don't need no inspections.

We have a simple exhaust test where they...you know...test what comes out of your tailpipe. To a logical person without an agenda, that should be the end-all of emissions testing. If the goal is met, who gives a rats *** what the engine/exhaust is doing to get it. Methinks Cali has other things in mind and other axes to grind with their emissions standards.

tower74 02-24-2012 09:44 AM

I agree...Unless your car is spitting out tons of black smoke what's the big issue. I can understand the smog issues but it seems more like a plot just to get even more money because I'm sure it's not free.
