Question 370Z FI Throttle Response: Boost vs. Throttle Position

For all the FI owners out there, what is your experience boost and throttle response when modulating throttle position? I want to get a feel for drivability and control. Too bad there's no turbo VQ cars for me to test drive to get a feel for this.

How does it feel when accelerating at partial throttle? Can you get it to start boosting at moderate RPM and throttle position? In other words, can you get a bit of assist during casual acceleration?

How about giving it a bit more throttle, and then letting it go (not completely) when boost starts to kick in? In other words, give it a decent amount of throttle to 40mph, and slightly releasing it and coast.

How about getting in 3rd, progressively press down the pedal to the floor, let boost kick in, and then gradually release the pedal and coast?

How about making a turn. Have you guys hit boost while turning and applying throttle? Does it oversteer easily because of this? It happened when I drove the Z32-TT... got a bit happy, squirrelly, but quite fun overall.

Also, with a boost controller like the EVC6, how well does it improve response especially at varying throttle position, RPM, etc. compared to not having one at all?

The car stasrts boosting right away so yes....keep in mind that the GTM kit uses GT28RS turbos which are small but spool up very quick.

How about giving it a bit more throttle, and then letting it go (not completely) when boost starts to kick in? In other words, give it a decent amount of throttle to 40mph, and slightly releasing it and coast. Lots of power but no real difference fom stock when you back off.

How about getting in 3rd, progressively press down the pedal to the floor, let boost kick in, and then gradually release the pedal and coast? Again, power but....no real difference from stock when you let off.

How about making a turn. Have you guys hit boost while turning and applying throttle? Does it oversteer easily because of this? It happened when I drove the Z32-TT... got a bit happy, squirrelly, but quite fun overall. If you kick mine while on a corner your tail is going to drift....much more than most TT Z32s.

I dont have a boost controller.

I will try to do my best to asnwer most of your questions.

1. When accelerating at partial throttle it really all depends on what gear your in. My boost normally kicks in around 3-4k rpm. So with that being said you can get very good assistance from partial throttle.

2. Im not sure what your really asking here but when you first get on it and slowly let off the car is smooth. However suddenly dropping the gas to slow down and can a bit jerky under boost.

3. You have to be careful around turns in boosted cars. Plenty of times I go to get on it around a turn and the rear comes loose a little. Boost is tricky with our cars and spools quick and hard so it catches you by surprise.

4. Again I am a little confused on what your really wanting to know but having a boost controller only really controlls boost levels. rpm have a effect on boost but i can slowly bring my rpm's up and not really be in boost but the second I hit the floor the car freaks lol.

All in all I hope I answerd some of your questions.

Haha good description guys. Thanks again. I'm constantly debating between SC & TT knowing that SC will provide increased power from the start. If the ECU tweak improves low RPM response, then I have no problem with TT.

I have the stage 1 tt on my G and the low end is there. 2500-3000rpm Its getting into boost in 2nd gear. Still has good top end too, just not as much as stage 2, right at 500rwhp and 450tq.

I'm also looking forward to getting the stage 1, and 500whp is plenty! Are you using a boost controller as well? I'd like to aim for 500whp with the high setting. At the low setting, around 400-450whp.

Why would anyone not get a boost controller for a car that is boosted? You are going to need one if you wanting to change it up when you want.

Using the HKS EBC - set at 6lbs and 10-11lbs.

If you dont plan on changing your boost.......YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE ONE! Also, the people who keep talking about their boost at certain rpms must have a bad tune......my boost hits AS SOON as I press the gas.......yes it builds as rpms build.....BUT....there is no waiting and no lag.......these are GT28RS turbos.....not very big...and....no lag!

I think you need to clarify what you are saying. Sure, as soon as you hit the gas and the engine starts flowing more air the turbos react, but you are not going to hit full boost instantly from any RPM. This is true with any turbo car. Moreover, if you barely get on the gas, you are not going to get it to fully spool up. What you are describing is what a large displacement V8 feels like...
