[BP single kit] COMP turbo fails after 882 miles.
We've all joked about the longevity of the air-cooled COMP turbo and how long COMP's supergrease would last, but now we have hard numbers to back it up! Those numbers are...
45 days. 882 miles. The hot-side impeller makes contact with the housing. There is lateral wiggle on hot- and cold-side impellers. The impellers spin freely when hand-spun, with no resistance. When the car was running, a horrible metal-on-metal sound occurs. COMP states that eight pumps of grease needs to be applied every 3,000 miles. Their product didn't even make it a third of the way to the first maintenance cycle. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...aeca1fed64.jpg |
Sorry to hear that. Back in the late 80's that is the reason they started water cooling the center section of the turbo. They lasted much longer. I converted my older Garrett turbo to be water cooled for my 1975 280z turbo. The engine and turbo came out of a 1982 280zxt.

Sorry buddy. This is the outcome we feared, but certainly not the one we desired.
|
Not good.......... not good at all. :shakes head:. Bet the grease either turned to wax, or ash.
|
Bring it with you to Madwi place.
|
Damn it. There goes the leader of the cruise this weekend. ****.

If you are going to covert over to a Precision turbo, let me know. I will get my CJ Motorsports oil pan back from Mazworx.
|
Elmo's guys really came through on the new turbo. I have an extra, brand new exa pump I'll sell ya for cheap too.

And that is definitely not the bearing burnt up from lack of pressurized oil and no coolant.
I think Comp had some engineers in the Emporium to come up with that idea. "Let's spin this spooly boy to 25k rpm but take way the pressurized oil that keeps the metal bits from touching" and then "let take away the cooling system and just blow hot air around the bearing journal " Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |
That sucks. Elmo will get you taken care of!

So Rusty and JC, who have a combined 115 years of experience with turbochargers, inspected the COMP turbo at Madwi's without taking it apart or doing anything that would void the 'warranty.' It appears that COMP failed to pre-grease the turbocharger. Elmo was kind enough to hook me up with a oil-lubricated, water-cooled snail which should arrive in three weeks or so. And shout out to Madwi for hooking me up with a deeply discounted scavenge pump and knowledge regarding all the miscellaneous items I'll need for that install.
Sasha has been trying to get a RMA from COMPturbo but they have been non-responsive. |

And Madwi's Z is still broke so I had the perfect excuse to buy him a winch to get his car back on the lift when we needed to use his lift for something more than holding failed comp turdbo dreams.:bowrofl: You need to be more positive and look at all the good this experience has brought to the community. There is always a silver lining in everything. :tiphat: And BTW, I'm of very sound mind, I just have no tolerance for BS |
Good to see that few of us here still
Look out for one another, from turbo solutions, built motors, to sourcing parts on the fly. |
Hey, just a heads up about the scavenger pump. Make sure you pay a bit more for the TurboWerx ExaPump and avoid the "Spartan" pump. I have the Spartan pump but have just found out that they have the potential to leak oil from the front of the pump where everything is bolted down. My pump is already mounted so I'm just going to cross my fingers and keep a watchful eye on it.

Shipped the turbo to COMP on June 30. Still no word from them. Sasha said he'd cover shipping and I sent him the $ amount, and then he asked for my paypal. Send him that, and several days later a paypal $ request. Still no response.

It is strange you are not getting a response from Comp. I have talked to them multiple times and they answer the phone right away and seem to have great customer service.
I really like these Comp turbos. I have one on my truck and have over 20,000 miles on it and was just cleaning the filter and there was zero play in the shaft. However, mine definitely came pre-greased...lol. Without that grease Im surprised it lasted even that long. |
COMP's employees are clairvoyant. They signed for the turbo on 7/7. Called today asking about its status. COMP knew the status of the TC before I even finished giving my name! Apparently they dont know what's wrong with it but it'll be ready to ship by Monday and they'll have a report ready then but sometimes when turbos fail - in a warranty period - the causes are really complicated and probably beyond the consumer's knowledge base but they'll totally know by Monday when they ship it out.

Got a response from Comp, finally, regarding what caused the damage.
Their response was: "Hello [Betty], The unit was damaged internal to see what caused the issue so that’s why it was covered under warranty." I asked if they had specifics on what caused the damage. The response: "Production advised the clearances might have tight which caused the wheel to rub and caused the failure. All damaged parts have been replaced or repaired and it is ready to ship. Please contact shipping to proceed." So there ya go folks! Tight clearance. In a turbocharger. Who woulda thought? |
