Posted some additional information regarding the STILLEN Supercharger, intake manifold, and specifically regarding the intercooler setup chosen, along with reasons why.

Just read the posting. I'm very interested to see how the air-to-water intercooler perform with your kit. Keep up the good work!

VHR motors have been able to withstand quite a bit of power with FI, but adding supporting mods such as upgraded radiator, engine/tranny/diff coolers, clutches and etc won't hurt!

I am already pretty much conviced that Stillen's supercharger system will be the way to go. At first I thought they were crazy when they first talked about the replacing the intake manifold. Now it makes perfect sense and the intake and intercooler design really sounds like the best solution I have seen yet. My question is why Stillen chose the Vortech compressor over the Rotrex compressor. IMO the Rotrex compressor is better engineered than the later and would appear to hold up better over time and mileage just due to the fact it has no gears to wear and create friction and noise.

Lastly, Vortech is an American company who Stillen has worked with over the years. Made in the USA was a big factor for Stillen and this kit.

Question my dealership asked me when i told them about this. Since dealerships sell Stillen parts, will they eventually sell the supercharger kit.

Vortech's pieces do not seem to have the best reliability by a long shot. There are countless threads on them having bearing problems. Seems like they work well on the larger displacement domestic engines because they generally don't have as high of a rev limit. The import or smaller displacement engines are usually built to rev, and the vortech units don't seem to like this. The good news is that the new units are self contained oiling systems, so if they do grenade at least its not dumping bearing shrapnel back into your oil pan like the older units did. Gives you at least a chance of your engine surviving when it goes out. The other thing with the Vortech unit is the noise, these things are always so damn loud compared to the Rotrex. I know that not an issue for everyone, but for me i just could not deal. I can just imagine the poor drive through working having to ask you to turn off your airplanes turbine engine so they can take your order. lol
As far as the air/water vs air/air solutions, Stillen does have some valid points, however they have left out some critical data. How large is the water system? You have to have a good amount of water (weight) on board to keep the temps down if you are running the smaller cooler like they say they are. If not the water will heat soak just like too small of an air/air IC setup will. The Toyota Celica Alltrac (GT4) had some of these issues on the factory air/water IC set ups. Either way i'm very curious to see the end results of the this kit. I know Stillen Z/G SC kit doesn't get much praise from the 350Z crowd for the lack of power it makes. Hopefully this one does better for them! |

On your point about the 350z Stillen S/C, I've heard similar complaints that it was underpowered... This sounds to be a substantially different design though, so I think we should reserve judgment until they get a test car preped and do some dyno and 1/4 mile tests

For this unit, it sounds like they are using a V-3 with a custom trim to hopefully regain some of that low end torque. Couple this with the longer runners in the intake manifold, it should prove to be a very good kit. ... of course, we need still need to see it on a car and running.

obviously this kit is vastly different than that for the previous generation. I just hope they learned a good lesson on that. I mean its not like anyone forced them to use that particular supercharger, that was the choice they made. All i am saying is i hope whoever sized this supercharger did a better job and gave them room to make some power. Obviously its all guesses until dyno graphs get posted.
