Hey bullitt, or anyone running the hammerhead GTM oil pan and a TT kit.... should we still go with something like the 34 row Setrab cooler if we ever want to take it to the track? Or will a 25 row or something medium-sized be sufficient due to the increased oil capacity of the pan?
I'd like to be able to take my car to a road course, but don't want to be fighting over-cooling all the time on the street. I will have a thermostatic sandwich plate, but still thought I'd ask, not sure how much more heat we'll be dealing with for these snails... |

Tony at FI says they have heat issues with anything under a 34 row. I'm running a 25 row with my BP kit and I never deal with heat issues but the G has more grill area. |
I thought the BP was 30 row. I have no heat problems. Csf + oil cooler = good temp control.

My kit has arrived! WOOOOOP!

Is that true even on the V1 kits? I never bothered to count rows when I installed it. Either way I have no cooling issues but I'm running about 8-8.5 qrts of oil with all the lines, oil cooler and pan spacer. |

Awesome. Thanks guys. Got me convinced. I can always add a block-off plate if I need to.

Smallish update.. I have been contact with JTRAN. They are closed for the holidays 12/25 - 1/5... But they will make an exception to tune my car for a $100 convenience fee. I am cool with that... If my job offered me $100 to come in on a holiday I would probably laugh, so I'll take it.
The total cost of the dyno tune (with fee) will be $750.. this does not include the Ecutek license since I plan to get that from Gamma as part of my kit. I am going to call Gamma later today to confirm the details with them and make sure they can get my the Ecutek license, etc.... I also still haven't gotten a response on the bunch'o'questions I sent (on Thanksgiving) them about their instructions so I will get an update there as well. I am hopeful that Gamma will have their canned tune ready in time so we can at least get a look at it (and report back) at JTRAN before the dyno tune. I'll update again later when I get in touch with Gamma. |

Party at JTRAN!
I called Amin at Gamma and explained what I wanted to do and he is cool with it. I am shipping the Uprev cable back to him and he is going to send me the Ecutek stuff. He is going to check on what happened to my list of tech questions and will get back to me. I made an appointment with JTRAN for 12/28. If Gamma doesn't have a base tune ready, I'll have to get the car towed to JTRAN... which is unfortunately like 30 miles away from my sister's house. Might as well spring for a AAA membership.. probably can't hurt if I am going to DD a forced Z for a while. This whole thing is starting to feel like a reality and I am getting pretty f*cking excited. |
can't wait to see this !
|
I'm excited for you bro!

The owner is the tuner, Johnny. He's tuned my car 5-6 times and always does a good job. |

After I spoke to Amin on Thursday I still, unfortunately, do not have any answers to my tech questions yet.. now 18 days waiting =(. I will post some of them here for ya'lls input... at least, those that aren't directly related to the verbiage in the instructions. My BIL overnight'd the Uprev stuff back to Gamma so I am hopeful they will have my Ecutek cable and license to me in time for the build. I'm going to give them a call this afternoon to check up on everything. |

Luckily it cant be too different from the other twin kits on the market, so there's plenty of people here that can help figure things out. |

Oh and I agree with Chuck. Post your questions. There are a bunch of us with hands on experience with FI VQ's. |
Buzzed Gamma again today and they finally got back to me on all of my questions. They tell me that they will be answering tech support emails during the holidays... hopefully they will be responsive! I start the road trip to Houston tomorrow after work! Will be stopping to spend the night with my folks in the panhandle. CANT WAIT TO GET STARTED!

Woohoo!!

Is gamma ever coming to the table with that roots blower?
|
I am heartbroken.
2 hours into my trip to Houston yesterday...this. http://www.the370z.com/members/jayho...217-195013.jpg Everyone is OK and no other cars were involved. I lost control of the car cruising at 80mph on the interstate, it was raining. I am an idiot about two things. 1) I didn't know the dangers of using cruise on wet roads. I know now. 2) I check my tires periodically, but right in the center my rears are worn pretty well and I probably should have gotten new tires. There was still tread but not a ton, I didn't notice. Make sure you get your head all the way down there to check. So, what now? I am still flying to Houston to see family. My brother-in-law wants to go car shopping tomorrow... I am willing to take a look. If they total the car (not sure this will happen, but that rear wheel is not sitting straight any more) I will be elated. If they fix it, I will sell it ASAP either way. I am planning on getting another Z regardless, love the car and couldn't bear to go get a BRZ or something instead. So, gonna check out a couple Z's tomorrow in houston and if I happen to find a match, then game on with the turbo kit. If not... it will have to wait a year. =( I am so very disappointed in what happened, but feel so lucky things didn't go worse. I have been dreaming of what this week was supposed to be since 2008 when I got a 350z. I'll keep you guys up to date with what happens. Pour one out for my Pearl White. |

damn it bro, that sucks man. Glad no one got hurt. hoping that it works out for the best for you |
Totally feel for you man. That is very bad timing. I agree though, semi slicks worn down mostly equals bad things in the rain. I hydroplaned going about 60 and luckily got her back under control. Had there been anyone beside me I would have been in your situation.
Hope it all works out for you. |
Man I'm sorry to hear that. That really sucks. If I had to guess, they are probably going to total that out. Quarter panel damage like that isn't cheap to fix
|
Ouch, glad everyone is ok. If I read the thread correctly, you did not install the kit yet if so, that is a good thing at this point, especially if they total it as that would be a pretty heavy shot to the shorts.
Best of luck to you. |
Sorry this happened, but so glad everyone is OK. Good luck with whatever direction you choose to go. Hopefully, they'll total it and you are able to find another Z quickly. Keep us updated.

My kit has arrived! WOOOOOP!
That definitely sucks. Glad no one was hurt.

Today was a very uplifting day! After scouring a 250mi radius around Houston, there was only two cars I had any interest in... I drove all the way out to BFE Louisiana and found my new ride.. a 2013 GM Base+Sport w/22k miles! Love, love, love it! Got a deal I really couldn't refuse - $21,600. Still under the factory warranty. The only way I could be happier is if I had not wrecked two days ago. Anyhow.. It was dark by the time we finalized everything.. so I snapped this pic when I stopped for gas. Car already has an Invidia cat-back but looks pretty unmolested otherwise. Drove like a dream all the way back to Houston. Tear down begins tomorrow! http://www.the370z.com/members/jayho...219-173248.jpg |
Think you'll get it done?

Depends how qualified you and your help are and what all you are trying to accomplish along with the kit installed.
I installed my BP kit in five days with two helpers with equal mechanical capability I have so it went pretty well. The Gamma kit is more difficult. We did do all my gauge install and wiring too. It's possible but it'll be a lot of work. |
Glad to see you found another Z man, can't wait to see some pics of your install.
|
Quick update. We are pretty much complete with the "tear down" section of the installation.
Removed: Wheels, Bumper, Fender Liners, Power steering lines and cooler, Upper intake manifold, injectors/fuel rails, cats, y-pipe, exaust manifolds, and steering coupler. Every fastener has been bagged and tagged, and paired parts have been marked to designate which side and orientation they go back in. We have had a bit of an up and down start as my BIL's kids do kid things and they have holiday stuff they've had to do - but we are starting to build momentum. Only one hangup so far, we lost 4 hours to the drivers side "demon bolt." As suggested in the instructions, we used 40" of 1/2" extensions with a 3 foot breaker bar but the socket would just slip off the bolt. We tried a 350 ft/lb impact wrench. Went to Northern Tool and bought a 1300 ft/lb impact wrench..still no go. We finally took the nuclear option and used a bolt extractor, and then finally the head of the bolt sheared off. Good enough for us.. it was clear that thing was never going come out unless we put a torch on it and we felt it was too tight to try. One other small hang up.. the stupid manifold heatshield bolts. we got 2 of 6 off, the other 4 sheared off. Whatever. Damn things are only 10mm and there is no room in there to steady the torque on them so they just end up bending and getting stuck in the manifolds. We are going to deviate from the instructions in a couple of small ways, please let me know if you guys think this is a bad idea. 1) The instructions suggest we install injectors/fuel rails and upper intake manifold and then install the exhaust manifolds and turbos after. I think the little bit of extra room with the intake manifold (and throttle bodies) off will make manifold/turbo installation easier so we are going to reverse those directions. Any reason why we shouldn't? 2) We are going to install the fuel pump last as my BIL's lift is a 2-post symmetric so opening the doors and getting in and out of the car is a bit of a pain... figure it will be far easier once the car is back on the ground. Any reason why we shouldn't? We have taken a ton of pics, probably will do a mass pic dump after we are done since we are working under a time constraint. So far it's been really fun, but I am looking forward to that finish line! |
this thread is still a better story than twilight...sub'd!
btw, looks like I need to come back home to texas....not too many ppl out here in GA doin things like this. -___________________- no offense to those who ARE lol |
Sorry to hear about the accident, but glad you found a new Z and things are progressing
|
You can wait on installing the intake and fuel rails if that will make it easier for you. I would just make sure no debris gets inside obviously while you are working on your car. Same thing with the fuel pump. You can do that at any stage in the process.
Congrats on your "new" Z, especially so quickly. Good luck on meeting your time constraints! |
