Self-healing paint has been around since late 2005, early 2006 in the Japanese market and is the byproduct of the Japanese's obsession with cleanliness. It has been available since early 2007 on Nissan's Infiniti products, and no current Nissan model has it aside from the Infiniti ones (I'm not even sure the GT-R has it), if memory serves me correctly.

They call it Scratch Guard. It's basically a coating as thick as a normal coat of paint which goes over the clear coat of your car. The paint will fix itself after it had experienced a scratch that has not penetrated the Scratch Guard coat; allegedly pouring hot water over the affected surface speeds up the process. The Scratch Guard basically contains a highly elastic resin that mends itself over time when it is exposed to a heat source such as the sun.

Another one of Nissan's countless innovations. I'm not sure if the new Z will have it. Maybe it'll be extra.

I'm hoping the new Z gets it. It's going to be another $400 if they offer it as an option. But here in Los Angeles, it's a requirement. You can't go 10 feet without someone bumping your car, opening a door into it, or a bird crapping on it.

On a side note, if you part a car in a parking lot that holds 20,000 cars, and only 15 cars are parked in it, and you park in the very back nearly 400 feet from the entrance, it's a guarantee that some jerk is going to park RIGHT NEXT TO YOU!

Yep. There's also a theory about another type of paint called "nano paint" that will actually even cure deep scratches. No clue when that will ever be made even a concept, but the idea was sound (based on what I was watching).

I love where these new technologies are going lately... Especially because they're green.

I have the self healing paint on my Black 09 G37s and am interested to see how it will work for the inevitable swrils I will get. It is heat activated. You can clay bar it but it is not recomended to use a power buffer on it. As well it only lasts about 3 years

Black paint is extremely hard to maintain. Any imperfections become blatantly obvious very quickly.
