what is self healing paint?

I've read reports that it's an option on the Z in metallic form. Would that mean those of us in red and chicane are out of luck?

I was really hoping for this because I'm going an MB 370... but I shot an email to Nissan Usa who said non of the Z's have it (not standard nor optional).
