GTM High MASS Shift knob poll

Hi, my name is Matt and I am the CNC Machinist/Programmer here at GTM and these are the new shift knobs we are now making. The advantage we have by specializing in these cars means that all of these knobs have been designed to replicate OEM fitment from the size of the threads, to the internal chamfers in the mounting hole, and even the diameter of the top of the factory shift boot, to provide superior fitment to any other aftermarket knob out there. The knobs will be made from a special heavy metal alloy that is over 7% more dense than stainless steel. The list of available finishes are being put together now, once it is done we will begin selling these. There will be an engraved GTM logo on the top of the knob, or we are also working on getting a 6 speed shift pattern decal made. Pricing will come when we release the list of available finishes.

I would be interested in something similar to the shape of the Forged shift knob with a burnt Ti finish or a black-anodized looking finish.

I personally don’t like any of them. I prefer the sphere look (ball).

LOL this guy..

Ryguy 12-03-2013 12:47 PM

I see a lot of red and black knobs but I think it would be cool to color match it with the stock colors and have the same gloss finish.

dP3NGU1N 12-03-2013 12:57 PM

Any options that's asymetrical or less available in the market? Even the OE knob is only symmetric in one direction. I wouldn't mind something a bit more ergonomic.

fuct 12-03-2013 01:09 PM

i love the zele Ti version, just not the $400+ price tag. :/

Riptide67 12-03-2013 01:13 PM

I love the look of number 9, reminds me of the TK knob.....but really it is all about feel.

I loved my PWJDM until I got a TWM knob. The weight is what makes the knob.

I have looked at it and all i can say is maybe. If i do make a knob for the automatics I will start another thread for it.

Also this is a project I am doing in my free time outside normal company work, I own a 370 and because i want a knob for my car, and wasn't satisfied with current offerings, I decided to go ahead and do this and offer it to you guys as well. I will work on adding a couple of designs per suggestions, I'll try to update later tonight after i get home.

Also all knobs will have the factory H pattern engraved on the top

Well you got a purchase for an auto right here, and I am confident others would follow suit.

Whtfairladyz 12-03-2013 09:00 PM

To be honest none of the designs are revolutionary or new. Tomei, NISMO and Dewla Designs are just a few of companies I know already making 90% of these designs.

The problem with ALL of them is that none match the interior of the 370Z AT ALL.

Matt@GTM 12-03-2013 09:39 PM

I know a lot of these are similar to ones on the market, what i wanted to do with them though is offer them in a heavy knob with oem fitment. I dimensioned them from the 370z factory knob and shifter shaft, the bottoms of the knobs are designed to be the same size as the factory shift boot where most aftermarket knobs are much smaller. This is why the bottom of every knob i drew is the exact same size, I can guarantee they will fit just like the OEM knob. As for the requests for asymmetrical knobs I want to stay away from them as a cost standpoint since they would cost quite a lot more to manufacture, and I am trying to keep these affordable and in house so there will be a quick turnaround. An asymmetrical knob would need to get cast to keep it affordable but that would add significantly to the time.

how bout for an auto? I like the Razo RA93

SS_Firehawk 12-03-2013 10:15 PM

Well, if you make one before I pick my car up again, I like #9 ;)
Feel free to test fit it and leave it on.

DEpointfive0 12-03-2013 11:04 PM

Everyone will always choose the TK knob, but unless you're making and selling them for sub $90, or much heavier, someone already makes a knock off.

Also, get GTM off your name if you want is to take you mildly serious

Because none of the finishes are nailed down yet the price also hasn't been. Please remember this is in the very early stages. Some more info for you though would be that the material I have spec'd for this job is VERY high quality and my CAD software tells me knob 9 is going to weigh somewhere over 530gm. Knob 9 was also completely drawn from scratch to a style I like so some differences between it and the TK knob I can point out from looking at it(I don't have a TK knob to look at so I can't tell you exactly) would be that to make it more comfortable I smoothed the transition from the ball area to the finger hold by filleting it, also it looks like the TK knob is too small for the top of the shift boot whereas this knob will blend to the diameter of the top of the boot nicely. I'm trying to update the poll with the new options if any body has any more requests feel free to tell me.

Once I am done with these I may look into doing the automatic knob that is all i can say for now.

kenchan 12-04-2013 10:45 AM

these are all copycats, no?

1slow370 12-04-2013 11:22 AM

the styles and shapes look similar but how is someone supposed to "copycat" a ball on a stick or a cylinder. Number 9 is similar but if it isn't $250 I'll take one in satin gold.

do you mean how is someone NOT suppose to copycat a ball on a stick?

Chuck33079 12-04-2013 11:32 AM

A leather-wrapped option would get my money. I don't do metal shift knobs after I burned a H-pattern into my palm one hot summer day.

Matt@GTM 12-04-2013 12:02 PM

Yeah about that I have been thinking of shipping each knob with a velvet bag to put over it in summer, I would have to look into getting it wrapped, but it may be doable.

Matt@GTM 12-04-2013 12:12 PM

The burnt titanium finish will not be available as it cannot be done with the alloy I am using.

skosmc 12-04-2013 12:35 PM

#9 looks good. Keep doing what you are doing Matt. It's a shift nob, it's been done before guys. Not a lot of room for something "ground braking" when it comes to a shift nob. Pretty awesome that you are taking your free time and making something you like, for your Z. Hopefully it gives us all an option for a nice shift nob, that has great weight to it at a decent price. Kudos to you.

#9 in Black. I'll be down for one.

XPNSD IT 12-04-2013 07:34 PM

I would really like an OEM type knob, with leather around the sides, but on top metal circle with the gears engraved in an aluminum brushed finished to match the interior parts. I'll photoshop something later.

So a 350z knob then?

Quick measurements at the flare on the bottom of the factory and TK knobs -
TK = 1.293
Factory = 1.473
Difference of .18 inch or 4.57 mm

It is smaller but it doesn't look too small.

Xplicit97 12-04-2013 08:21 PM

Will any of these be counter sunk to make the shift knob set lower than stock like the TK knob does?

Number 11 looks exactly like my Forged Performance knob. I love the hell out of it.

You and Chuck can have CFE wrap it in leather for you

I like 13 tho too, and the ball on a stick

In the picture i just posted above it doesn't look like the TK is sitting lower than stock, did you just mean if the knob is shorter? Maybe draw a factory knob for comparison?

on that note whats better a tall knob or a short knob? I mean check THESE things out

Gadgetech 12-05-2013 03:13 AM

There's a picture comparing the factory and TK knobs somewhere on here and the TK does sit noticeably lower. I'll see if I can find it.
