Just out of curiosity for anyone that has these mirrors or even the craftsquare, why does the mirror stalk come out of the mounting plate on a bulge that looks

Just out of curiosity for anyone that has these mirrors or even the craftsquare, why does the mirror stalk come out of the mounting plate on a bulge that looks detached? Not only that but you can see the nut holding the stalk from inside the car. Why not just have a clean cover with the mirror coming out of it much like the stock mirror does.
The mirror and stalk are adjustable so set forward a few inches shouldn't matter.
