Gloss black vinyl on roof?

Has anyone used a Vinyl wrap on the roof to go gloss black? I don't want to paint it as I want to be able to remove if I feel it necessary.

corbin09 10-22-2011 11:01 AM

Yep- The thread above yours shows someone wrapping their PW with a black roof. Here is mine.

Yeah I had a satin black on my Z and it was great.

somatic 10-22-2011 11:04 AM

yep, i've got flat black on my silver, and Dallaz has gloss black on his monterrey blue. His looks better, but mines easier to keep clean lol

pty370z 10-22-2011 11:07 AM

I have gloss black vinyl in my roof as well.. Got it from BlueBatmobile..

Very happy with my decision, really makes the Z look different..

kenchan 10-22-2011 11:48 AM

corbin- roof's looking good. btw, what wheels are those? :)

corbin09 10-23-2011 10:01 AM

They are MB Battles.. best bang for the buck wheel. 18x9.5 +15 all the way around. They weigh 21 lbs so pretty light. You can pick them up for around 800 bucks for a set.

Did you install yourself? Also how much was it?

Interested to hear if there are some cheap solutions to a black roof. Someone i spoke to privately said it was about $600 to have it painted.

I saw someone tried to Plati-Dip their roof as well. Didn't turn out very well..

somatic 10-23-2011 11:47 AM

Dallaz an I each got ours done for under $250

I tried that. Would have been fine if I wanted a flat finish, but I wanted gloss as well. I'm debating whether to get vinyl or get it painted. I've been quoted $350 to paint the roof gloss black.

That's low. If they're a reputable shop Id go for it

They are a really good shop and the same ones that did my tail lights. Would be great to get this as a bday present in February

Baer383 10-23-2011 06:12 PM

I'm doing mine this winter plus I work in a body shop so I get it painted for free.

b1adesofcha0s 10-23-2011 06:15 PM

Only thing is it might make me want to get my window tints re-done to make them darker so it looks better with the black roof :icon17:

Do you have any pictures with it matte black? I have the rims done, so it might look good..

Yeah here they are. It was 100*+ outside that day, which is probably why we couldn't get the gloss finish at all.

I figured there would be spots where the nozzle split or the spray was too close..
I like the glossy black with dark windows.

No offense to the plasti-dip on the roof, but i'm already going cheap by blasting my rims with the matte.

I think ill have to pay up and do it the right way.

Thank you

No problem. I definitely love the gloss black look with the dark windows. Only reason I tried the plasti dip on the roof because it was cheap ($10-15) and easily removable.

The roof needs to be re done in the shade!

I did the G37 coupe on a hot day just like you did... Same problem you had. I found that it was best to spray around 70-90 degrees in the shade... It allowed the particles to lay flat and not dry too fast... yours definitely dried too fast and the particles as such couldnt lay flat.

PM me if you want some more pointers on the Plastidip.

Mike

Appreciate the advice, but I want a gloss finish for the roof and not the flat finish from the plasti dip. Tried to spray a clear coat over the plasti dip, which is where the real issue came up with the high temps. It left a white residue when it dried.

On second thought, I will probably get vinyl rather than paint. I do plan on selling the Z in a few years so I would just have to pay to get it re-painted back to factory color. With the vinyl I could just take it off myself and use the money I save to get my tint redone :p

B&W_Evader 10-24-2011 09:32 AM

Has anyone done stripes yet? Point me to some pics if you know of any.

In for prices if anyone knows vinyl pricing!

I got my roof wrapped for 150... if it makes a difference to anyone. They can do it 1 of 2 ways, remove the panel above your window and wrap all the way or cut it at the seams. Mine was cut at the seams but looks great.

Not trying to be mean or anything, but c'mon. Why buy a 30k sports car and spray paint the effin roof? :shakes head:

Yeah that's why I removed it immediately after taking the pics. More of just an experiment for fun to see how the stuff worked. If it looked good then it would be great and I would save some money. If not, then I can just take it off and no harm done.

TypeOne 10-24-2011 04:38 PM

Whew! You had me there for a second... man... good call...

I plasti-dipped my emblems on my Z and they came out great. I ended up peeling them off and spraying them and re-gluing them back on. Looks much more complete now.

:icon18:

I'm thinking about plasti-dipping my fangs after getting the Stillen front splitter. Definitely shouldn't be anywhere near as terrible looking as the roof. :icon17:
If it doesn't look good, then I'll just take it off and get it painted at a body shop.

Waiz 10-24-2011 04:41 PM

I had my roof vinyl'd over two years ago and it still looks good.

You just need to treat it like you would treat a painted part and it should last you for awhile.

What color do you have? What about wheels? Some pics would help... We always follow a theme with the car and make sure it flows.

corbin09, very nice, I have been debating gloss or semi glass black roof in vinyl for both my PG and the bro's Red Z34. Someone mentioned the Bat as a source, wonder what he is charging for the vinyl as I have someone locally that can install it.

IIRC it was somewhere around $100.

^Very good price, I will take two. Thx b1adesofchaOs

lol to-shay my friend, to-shay:tiphat:

to be honest with you, we are only a few hundred more than the amount you listed ;). Which involves removing windshield, rear hatch, sanding down roof, prepping, wrapping, resin, more sanding, more resin, more sanding, more resin LOL you get the point. Finally professionally clear coated and everything reinstalled :driving:....
