Pics of the handles? This is pretty much the same conclusion I've reached about plasti dip. Going to be doing the same thing with my wheels soon. Should be much easier to clean as well.

Thanks!

Totally followed this thread and knocked out my front lip, emblems door handles and rear valance in one morning! i was ready to spend a grip on paint, got away with a $6 can of plasti dip instead! AWESOME!

Ghetto tire shop. Do I need to say anything else? :icon17:

I have gotten all the plasti dip off my wheels and they are finally back to stock color. Had to use goo gone to get all of it off and it worked amazingly well.

Huck 06-26-2012 08:47 PM

Yeah I've reached the same conclusion. Plastidip is a good, cheap, temporary solution to keep me happy till I can afford my carbon fiber pieces.

b1adesofcha0s 06-26-2012 08:51 PM

I think plasti dip is good only to get an idea of how something will look before you make a permanent change. I think badges/emblems might be the only thing you can keep plasti dip on for a long time without issues. I've moved on from plasti dip to paint.

Huck 06-26-2012 08:59 PM

The thing that I still like about it is that it's a good protectant for your paint. There's been a couple times on the highway where a rock hit my fangs, but didn't do any damage because of the plastidip.

Footloose301 06-26-2012 09:01 PM

I've had plasti dip on the fangs for 6-8 months and not a single chip in it at all. Looks great. My old room mate had his fangs painted and had chips within days.

When I was pulling the plasti dip off my wheels, some of the parts that had gotten really hot took some of the wheel's original finish off with it. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow to show you guys what I'm talking about. This might have to do with my new brake set up though since it seems to get much hotter than the stock setup. I installed Carbotech XP8's a month ago and also took my car on a track session. Guess some parts of my wheels got a bit too hot at some point there.

Try WD40 to remove plastidip.

Look at my last post, I already got it off using goo gone that I picked up from Walmart for $5.

NickTurnon 07-03-2012 10:46 AM

Has anyone sprayed the license plate area?

I think that will be my next area to spray down.. Tape off the exterior of the license plate area and get the back portion blacked out.

I want it to be sort of like this guys, but non CF & a little smaller

lemon-fresh 07-03-2012 02:02 PM

I'm seriously considering blacking out my front fangs. Looks like taping that area off is gonna be a real bitch, any tips?

NickTurnon 07-03-2012 02:03 PM

Yeah, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy their $2 plastic wrap. You can just use a little pocket knife and cut out a hole in the wrap to spray the fangs..

lemon-fresh 07-03-2012 02:08 PM

wicked! Glad I asked.

lemon-fresh 07-03-2012 02:15 PM

Something like this?

20 in. x 1000 ft. Stretch Film-5005002 at The Home Depot

Or this?

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...&storeId=10051

NickTurnon 07-03-2012 02:44 PM

Neither- not that intense.

Just walk into a Lowes or Home Depot- Go to the Paint/Tape section and there should be a little case on the end of the isle that has really cheap plastic wrap. In a little cheap bag. Its just for painting a room and laying it down on the ground

$2 TOPS. I think Home Depot is $1.98.

It fits the whole front or whole back of any vehicle

After cutting out the hole for the fangs I would still have to tape the opening down right? Or will the plastic adhere to the bumper without taping?

You still have to tape off the edges, but its much less work then taping the whole car or pieces of paper together

the thinner also has more application than just removal...... but I'm sure you already knew that too.

i did mine by just taping where i wanted a clean line, a few interior spots and was careful with over spray. i didn't mask anything else.

aslo a piec of cardboard or a trash bag behind the fangs is a good idea to block the radiator. in order to get a good color match i had to spray over the entire area.

the small residual spray is easily removed with a microfiber cloth and windex or you could use goo gone as mentioned here previously. The product is easily removable so prep work is important but not such a PITA. it took me a while to get comfortable with knowing i can just peel it off if i don't like it....... I mean its like spray paint.... but it isn't ;)

If you are gonna do allot of plasti dip work id recommend you get their thinner from the site. you can use it to repair sections also, rather than removing everything and re applying.

lemon-fresh 07-10-2012 11:30 AM

Thanks again for all the tips. The trickiest part was the final touch up but with some qtips and googone you can really smooth out the rough edges.

http://i1025.photobucket.com/albums/...h/photo2-1.jpg

Might take it off the front emblem and depending on how it holds up I'll do the rear diffuser next.

Looks great lemon. I have had my diffuser dipped for over a year now and it looks the same as the day I did it.

lemon-fresh 07-10-2012 12:08 PM

Thanks! Interesting, taping a clean edge on the diffuser might be a bit tricky, does the lip on it act as a natural tear point?

mine came out pretty clean by using the lip as a taping guide. It has held up really well.

Its hard removing the tape in general with Plasti Dip. Its a rubbery substance that makes removing tape not so easy. I lightly scored it with a blade before removal. Here is a pic of my diffuser so you can see where I taped it off.

for a clean line you gotta pull the tape while the plasti dip is wet. check out dipyourcar.com or youtube..... pretty good tips out there

I must be getting jacked on my quotes. I was curious about having my wheels and door handles color matched to my car. $1000, provided I take the wheels and door handles off the car for them. I also decided to find out about tinting my rear windows and a very light tint to my tail lights. $600. So any DIY stuff like Plasti Dip wins out IMO. The only thing I don't like is the feel on the door handles, too plasticy (That's not a word but you know what I'm getting at).

FYI for anyone doing this, make sure you start EARLY in the day if you're going to do your wheels as it will take several hours and painting in the dark SUCKS.

Random Strata 07-13-2012 12:56 PM

Sorry I forgot to toss up some pics so I ran outside to take a few. Overcast at the moment so the pictures aren't the best.

:ninja3: Pictures were FRIGGIN HUGE and I hate having to scroll sideways.

No you are definitely getting ripped off there. There was a local member who wanted to get his door handles painted so he bought an extra set and gave it to the body shop, who did it for like $100-200 I think. I had my tail lights tinted with vinyl for $100 and then later had them painted for the same amount by a body shop. There was a slight discount for the tail lights, but I don't think it should be more than around $150-200 or so if you take them out of the car and give them to the shop. If the shop is going to have to do labor to take them out and put them back in, it's a different story, but still seems pricey even with labor.

Decided to black out the rear license plate area-
I think it looks kinda nice!

SPOHN 07-16-2012 07:51 PM

As some of you may know I plasti dipped my side skirts way back for the track. Looked great and lasted against the abuse. But when you spray this on FRP material and not a smoother surface good luck getting it off. Boy was that a chore. Would not just peel off. Goo remover just made a oily mess of it. Brake cleaner did a great job but was still work. Finished it of with snading it off. Now my skirts are going to be painted.

kenchan 07-16-2012 09:57 PM

did you try any of the thinner that dip yourcar.com makes?

I'm gonna be taking some stuff off this weekend and fixing a couple of small issues. ill let you all know how it works.

Also I've found the thicker you put it on, the easier it is to remove.... haven't tried it on a unfinished surface though....
