Help! Huge chip

So I noticed today that I have a huge chip on my hood. Weird thing is that the chip is pretty small, but there is a much larger portion where the paint (any maybe clear coat) is gone, but the surface is smooth. No idea what happened. Totally makes me sick to my stomach. Question is -- is there any change that this can potentially be fixed with touch up paint, or am I looking at having to get my entire hood painted for this? My friend seems to think touch up paint would not work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Agree, looks like the clear peeled off also. You could try Dr Colorchip, but I think it might be too big a chip. If you have it done by a pro, they won't re-paint the whole hood, just that area and blend it in. Still won't be cheap though, so I would try Dr. Colorchip first. Kits start at around $40-50.

Yea I agree that it's prob too big to use one of those kits.

Has anyone here had good results with a professional blending in a spot this big? I really want to avoid having to paint the whole hood for one spot.

Don't try to blend in a spot on your hood. It will look like crap in no time. You need to repair the area and clear coat the whole hood.

The proper way to fix that is to first repair the chip and spot prime it, then lightly sand the whole hood with 1000 grit making sure that everything is dull looking so that you get proper adhesion. Then you spray a little base coat over your repaired area and clear the whole hood. You don't actually spray base coat over the whole hood, only the repaired area. I am the painter at a dealership and we would charge roughly $250 to repair something like that.

If you don't want to spend that much, I would put a dab of touch up paint in the chip and then put a dab of clear coat over that to fill the chip. Let it dry really well and then sand it down with 2000 grit followed by 3000 grit and buff it out. I just fixed a chip on my door using this method and you can't tell it was ever there. We do that all the time for around $50 and customers have been very happy with the results. Any decent body shop should be able to help you out.

Using the method that you talked about (for ~ $250), will the clear coat look good and match the rest of the car? (Assuming the person knows what they're doing)?

Was thinking another option might be a CF hood -- assuming it would not chip itself...haha. Otherwise I may just keep fixing these chips over and over. I know Seibon makes one that's fiberglass with a CF overlay.

Anyone seen carbon fiber on a 40th? I searched and found one with CF wheels, but no hood.
