I went with the bell 995 since I couldn't justify the price of a v1 or 8500. I had a bell 985 (995s predecessor) for 5 years previously and loved it.

The 995 doesn't seem as good as the 985, however I believe that part of it is cops learning to use the guns properly (not leaving them on the whole time). However, there are times where the K or Ka band seems to alert me way too late.

If a cop is on the side of the road with a car pulled over and K or Ka left on, my 985 would alert me from a LONG ways off, now it does sometimes, but not others. Also, the stationary radars on the side of the road that display your speed, I get warned about them at a closer distance than the 985.

I believe this may be because bell attempted to reduce false alerts but increasing the alert threshold because once I'm alerted, it locks onto the signal and alerts me for 1/2 mile past the things usually. I'd honestly prefer a few more false alerts if it means I'm less likely to get a surprise.

With that said, its the best for it's price range.

It spoke and told me when I approached a red light camera, which band or laser. It learned the traditional false alarms such as grocery store doors stopped after three alerts.

Being visible to thieves but mostly to the police who must see these detectors as reasons to write a ticket caused me to send it back after 30 days. They have another remote detector the 9500ci but it costs about $2000 installed. Just a bit more than I want to spend.

You live in california and radar detectors are legal here. What are you talking about....?
I've had mine for 3 years and it never caused me a single ticket even after being pulled over and the cop asking me about the device...

I just bought the Whistler XTR-695 (literally 2 minutes ago) to use only during my long distance drivings so that'll be only when I mount it. Amazon has it today for $99.99 with free shipping versus the list price of $249.95 so that was another good incentive. Here's the item: Amazon.com: Whistler XTR-695 Laser/Radar Detector with Radar Signature ID, Laser Signature ID, 7-Color Display, Real Voice Alerts and External Audio Jack: Electronics.

This is not entirely true. While radar detectors are not legal for the general public there is a way around this feature. Since a radar detector does not operate on a bandwidth which is protected there is a way to be "licensed" to use the bandwidth in which the detector operates. Any HAM radio operator has a license to operate devices in this band which just happens to include radar detectors. A state can not dictate your bandwidth use while using a federal license to use said bandwidth. But that is if you really care about using a detector in VA. :tiphat:

I have a V1 for my RSX-S and another for my family's MDX. Got my sister a Passport 9500 (or so, top of the line at the time before the GPS ones), but it got stolen in Chicago when somebody shattered her window.

I love my V1, best mod eva-R
