What kind of Armorall do you use...

on the dashboard? It seems as though it is a special material that you can't put normal armorall on.

Crash 02-12-2009 09:20 PM

None! NEVER!

That stuff is BAD for your panels. It gets into the pores of your panels and drys them out. Then they crack or warp. I used a dry dust cloth to dust my cars.

ssqpolo 02-12-2009 10:12 PM

dont do it!

OMGWTFBBQ 02-12-2009 10:33 PM

Yeah. None of the Armorall line will EVER touch my car. No thanks. :shakes head:

Crash hit it right on the head.

dad 02-12-2009 10:41 PM

Do you anything at all?

par4bmw 02-12-2009 10:47 PM

I have a jeep with the top down most of the time in the AZ baking sun so I need protectant. The people with the most experience on that forum recommended 303 Aerospace Protectant. I have been using it and like the results. We will see how it does in the long haul.

JeepGuy 02-12-2009 11:22 PM

I've used the Armor-All Cleaning Wipes on my last Jeep, a Grand Cherokee for years with no ill effects, if anything, the cheapo American plastics looked brand new for years. I still use them all the time on my new jeep and I think they work just fine. I won't touch the old fashioned style though, even if it was for the other problems, things just shouldn't look that shiny.

I have been VERY pleased by the cleaning wipes and will continue to use them for a long time to come.

DJcuetip 04-27-2009 05:26 PM

any recommendations for the interior panels and dashboard?

I second the recommendation for 303. It's not shiny or greasy and it has UV protectant in it. I've been using it for years.

DJcuetip 04-27-2009 06:53 PM

303 Aerospace Protectant is great stuff! I've used it on my G for 2 years.
Works great on my leather seats, the dash, doors, rubber seals etc. etc.

cwj370 04-28-2009 07:42 AM

Has anybody used this, Ultima Interior Guard Plus? I have used the paint guard plus and it works great!! I can't say how long it will last, I've had it on my car about 1 week. So far it has been amazing!

rreign 04-28-2009 10:13 AM

I have always liked Maguire's Interior Detailing spray. Used it on every vehicle I have owned and it works amazing. Armorall is sh*t, they're right about it drying EVERYTHING out!!

SoCal 370Z 04-28-2009 10:51 AM

My favorite for years: Vinylex

ocfoilist 04-28-2009 11:10 AM

I, too, am a fan of Mequire's. I've used their range of products for years with great results. I use their vinyl/rubber protector as well as their interior detailer.

The_Zed_car 04-28-2009 11:52 AM

I don't use armorall: I use 303 aerospace protectant or autoglym plastic conditioner.

arcticreaver 04-28-2009 09:47 PM

meguiars is the brand that i am using right now for the dash and leather cleaning. i also got their wax and quick detailer as well.

NeedforZ 04-28-2009 11:18 PM

Another vote for Meguiars. I've been using the Natural Shine Vinyl & Rubber Protectant and Quik Detailer Interior.

antennahead 04-29-2009 12:04 AM

Aerospace 303 cleaner and protectant, I use both products. If you keep your car clean you don't need to use the cleaner very often. Protectant is great at UV protection and is non-greasy.

With the way the interior is I thought I would jsut whipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Somhow it caused a white streak almost like a burn to form on the lower portion of the glove box.

I only had some Black Magic but it took it away. I was jsut thinking of using a warm washcloth from now on.

sensi09 04-29-2009 09:17 AM

Does the 303 have a greasy feel to it? Many products state that there is no greasiness, but they still feel greasy to me. Last time I used a meguiars gold class vinyl/rubber protectant, but any product that can be used on both the dashboard and tires will have greasiness to it.

I like the look of a good matte protectant, but don't like the feel. I usually just use a quick detailer or wipe down the interior on a regular basis.

The "feel" will be subjective to each individual, however, you cannot go wrong with either 303 or Vinylex. I typically purchase Vinylex as you can find it locally; 303 is a bit harder to find, but when I do, I purchase a bottle. 303 produces a natural sheen; Vinylex adds a sheen. Your preference for a matte finish means you will probably like 303 better—both are top-shelf products.

arcticreaver 04-29-2009 11:52 AM

haha oh wait, i do use armorall on my tires. Armor All - Product Detail

extreme tire shine gel. it was on sale and i thought gel was a lot better than spray because i didn't want to get that stuff on the paint.

Here's the tire protectant I use on daily drivers as it is the quickest to apply (I wipe any overspray off the rims): More Shine

I buy it by the 12-can case.

ACoupe 04-29-2009 12:51 PM

303 if left on, can be a bit shiny. It should however be buffed out a bit for a true matte finish. It's really great stuff and was created for use on boat seats, seals etc.

semtex 04-29-2009 01:56 PM

I do all my interior dusting with a Swiffer duster, except for the floor of course (which I vacuum out).

ACoupe 04-29-2009 02:10 PM

I keep a swiffer in my G as the interior is black and I'm OCD with my cars :P

Hey, this thread is about vinyl protectant, not your fantasy regarding some skimpily clad female in a maid's uniform dusting the interior of your Z! :icon14:

arcticreaver 04-29-2009 02:34 PM

is there a reason why armorall is disliked? i thought they are a good brand?

semtex 04-29-2009 02:35 PM

It's a racial thing. Nobody likes vikings.

If armor-all is used on a very regular basis, it doesn't hurt anything in the short term. But what happens is that oil gets into the pores of the vinyls and plastics and over time starts a drying effect on the materials. When in constant use, the oil keeps the materials in check, but the materials then have a dependence on the oils. When you neglect the panels for a little while the drying can start to cause the panels to turn either brittle or give them a VERY dry look. After some time, the panel will eventually crack.

The best thing to do is use a UV protection that doesn't have any oils in them. Water based products are usually better. I've never used the 303 stuff, so I can't comment on them. I'm pretty OCD about my cars, and I use a slightly damp cloth (water) to wipe down my dash. I have leather protection wipes for the seats, shift boot, and e-brake boot. For the rest, damp cloth. I also I hate the glare from the shiney crap... I wear polarized sun glasses most of the time I'm driving, but at night when street lamps go over the dash, the glare is there without any way around it.

3 years of using a damp cloth. NOTHING bad so far.

BTW: Just an observation, but I noticed that when I used some cleaners, it seemed to attract dust even more... I don't know if dust was just attracted and sticking to the oil in the cleaner, or if the shiney crap made the dust more obvious. One things for sure, the way I do things now, you don't notice dust until you wipe the panels down and look at the cloth.

ocfoilist 04-30-2009 04:57 PM

On a related note, what is everyone using for the suede in the car (center of the seats and door panels)? I've never had to care for suede, but I'm assuming that a standard leather conditioner is not appropriate...?

NeedforZ 04-30-2009 05:36 PM

I'm hoping our suede is synthetic and tougher than the real suede leather. After a google search on "how to clean suede" it appears the real stuff is susceptible to staining easily. I'll use a damp cloth followed by a dry towel to restore the nap.
