Dead-pedal/footrest

My car is an auto trans..

The other day under heavy braking I braced my left foot on the footrest while braking with my right. Pressing both of them pretty hard, the dead pedal made a couple of loud pops as I came to a stop.

It seems now like that whole carpeted wedge the dead-pedal sits on moves a good bit. Its attached to the carpet, but was it fastened to the floor or firewall in some other way that I just broke?

I took it to the dealer and they scoped it out; while I was waiting they said they got in another 370Z and it moved the same amount. I didn't verify this for myself though.

I guess it would make me feel better if you enlightened me as to how much your footrest moves? I'm talking the entire 'box' that the metal pedal is mounted to. Even if yours moves the same as mine, what could the source of the popping noise be? Is there some kind of fastener that cracked? Maybe something attaching the metal part to the 'box'? What is the pedal mount made of (underneath the carpet)? Could I have split it somehow (if its plastic)?

Please make me feel better.. The dealer didn't seem to care! Maybe you don't? Haha..

It's just cheezy plastic molded into that carpet with some styrofoam behind it. One nut (the blue seen here) holds it in place. You might have cracked it..

I got to looking around with a flashlight and found that screw; but the nut wasn't on it! I started looking around the floorboard and found it under the seat.

It wasn't cracked thank goodness! I popped it back on there. I bet when I frammed on the footrest it rebounded and knocked it off. The pop sound it made when I put it back on there was the same sound I heard that day!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction; I can already tell this place is going to help me a ton!

You should just take this as an opportunity to replace it (and the pedals) with the ones from SRP Racing. They are awesome.

arent those more like pedal covers rather than replacements? it doesnt really change the fact its bolted to a plastic/foam wedge under the carpet; so that design flaw is still going to suck.

The current footrest is only attached to the carpet, not the foam underneath. For the metal replacement footrest, if you use long enough screws (around 3 1/2") then there won't be much movement at all.

As to the actual pedals, for the brake and clutch pedal, you remove the rubber that is attached to the pedal, and for the gas you simply install it overtop the plastic pedal. Metal pedals feel so damn awesome while driving, and provide much better "feel" and grip.
