Off - Automatic - On - Parking.
Once upon a time, it was illegal to be in a parked vehicle without having some lights turned on. Since leaving the headlights on quickly ran down the battery, a compromise was the parking lights, which kept the tail lights and front marker lights on. They could also be used in daylight low-light conditions where headlights weren't required.
