Default gas level guage please help

My gas level guage had 8 dots lit up and the trip meter indicated I had 158 miles left with the gas I had in the tank. Next thing I know I run out of gas.
What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance

Most likely the fuel sending units. I had the same issue with my previous FX50.

The dots on my gauge have been inaccurate for a year or more. I now reset my trip odometer every time I fill up and use that as a more accurate indicator of when I need to stop for gas again.

Not uncommon for the fuel sending units to malfunction...

I use the sniff test. Open the gas filler cap and if you can't smell gas, you're out of fuel.

Mine the fuel punt was hanging by the tube and wires.
Cause? Hydroplane and hit the center divider, the bumper was scraped, Z was fine afterward for about 2 month
Them!!! Well, exactly like you described

Replaced my entire passenger side fuel pump assembly after hard starts most likely due to the built in fuel pressure regulator going bad. Low and behold I don't run out of fuel at indicated 1/4 tank fuel any longer. Typically 7 gallons left now at 1/4 upon refueling.
