Nothing too crazy, but I made my own Z start button:

I'm in for pics, always good to see what folks are doing.
I build a stealthy custom PC build in my old 350, but I'll keep this thread on topic.

Do you mean like the red velvet interior and stitched padded ceiling I plan for my Z?

theDreamer 01-16-2017 09:40 AM

Took the OEM navigation dash piece (did not have Navigation in my Z) and mounted a 7" screen to HKS Camp2 system.

Just a tablet in a custom bezel i made myself, wired to an amp via headphone jack, comes with a sim card so i can make/get phone calls but phone number is different, once i figure out call forwarding it will work perfectly, has data plan so i can use google maps, pandora...ect

JARblue 01-16-2017 03:40 PM

One of the OGs, shadoquad, had custom, Bugatti-inspired door panel and seat inserts. IINM, his mom did all the stitching

The quality of your work is amazing. You were very ahead of your time...the vertical applications are just recently in Teslas and newest Volvos.

Thank you, i'm hoping to get a 3d printer at some point and make a few for sale. Also, i'm not ahead of my time, its car manufacturers that are behind times.

Were you able to buy the navi bezel by itself?

Excellent thank you.

Happen to know the screen size but chance? I've been trying to find it but having no luck. Most I an gather is it is a 7" screen, which isn't exactly specific.

I can do 1 better, it is a 7" screen when measured diagonally, but to help more this is the exact model in my car: Accele LCDP7NB-B
The only issue I have ran into that I would like to solve is the screen does not power on when the car starts, it has a small remote I have to hit a power button on and then it turns on. :shakes head:

I wonder if there is an Android tablet that will fit that, the trick would be if the buttons will fit as well, or if you could do without them. There must be a way. I'd prefer a Mini4 but it's 8" and obviously won't fit. I'm really only concerned about running DashCommand and Androids should automatically power on or at least can make it that way.

Looks like that bezel is $50 and Android tablets are easily found under $100 so pretty cheap to give it a try.

Dammit, now I've got another project to add to my never-ending list lol :tiphat:

You could probably pick up a Nexus tablet the last gen was a 7", have one at home and my wife uses just to watch our Nest Cams. There was some discussion on tablet use on the forum awhile back about loading a custom ROM and a few apps you could use that allows the same functions as the buttons. This way the bezel could cover them and no need to do any extra mods.

That would be sweet. I don't know squat about Android or custom noms but I'm sure there is a solution in there somewhere. Heck, as long as it will power on and automatically pick up the bluetooth from my Kiwi I'd be happy. Better of course if it would start up in the DC app.

Bonus points for being able to wire it to use the stock USB port in the centre console - without sacrificing charging of course.

I'll explore this a bit further. I know there are a bunch of threads on tablets in that cubby but this seems to be the simplest solution by a good margin.

I did some research into this a while back when I considered ditching the stereo to go full tablet integration... The Nexus 7 is the tablet to have for something like this because someone created a custom ROM for it that will allow the USB port to power/charge the tablet while also functioning as a USB host for accessories. With most other tablets you will find this to be an annoying barrier to tablet integration (you either get to power/charge the tablet or connect USB accessories, but not both). You could then use the USB host capability to integrate buttons (or even interface to your steering wheel buttons!), cameras, OBDII, external sensors, etc etc etc.

For something like this, it would probably be perfect. For completely replacing the stereo, I did not think it would be viable for two reasons:
1) Bluetooth calling - the tab can not connect to a phone to act as a hands-free device for calling... which sucks because it has all the necessary hardware (bluetooth transceiver, audio out jack, integrated microphone) . It's a limitation within android at the moment.
2) The custom ROM was only made for the Nexus 7, and I wanted to replace both the stereo and cubby with a 10" tablet.

Hope that knowledge dump helps someone.

I wonder if it's a hardware limitation, or just software, for the bluetooth calling

Where did you find the Nav Bezel for $50? I remember trying to search a while back for it and IIRC it was pretty expensive. I just did a quick search now and can't seem to find at that price. 'Preciate the help!

According to (what seemed like) knowledgeable posts I saw on xda-developers , it's a limitation in the OS. That was a long time ago though. I haven't gone back to look since I discarded the idea.

Edit: One thing though - if it is OS related the chinese have solved it since they make Android head units that are capable of bluetooth integration.

I do know of a camp2 sitting around doing nothing if you are truly interested, friend has one and never used it.

Another option is a carPC, basically need to build a small PC that boots with the car and loads straight into the required software. Here is what one guy did in Houston: Link

This is what it looks like:

Once Carbon Signal sold out of their stock for the digital gauges they stopped carrying them and started referring those interested to the company who actually produced them... can't say that I've heard or seen anything in regards to anyone purchasing them since.

I've found 2 ways to do this:
1. Call forwarding if your tablet has a sim card, you can automatically enable call forwarding on bluetooth connection using AutoMagic app.
2. Bluetooth headset with an output jack + Tablet Talk app for android. Your phone will connect to headset via bluetooth, then Tablet Talk allows you to answer the phone from tablet.

Car PC is an overkill you can just get a tablet and a wireless ODB2 adapter
