That vertical tablet install is incredible!! I'm almost disappointed that my Z choices with the Nav unit. Seriously good skills making that mate!

Here is a prototype i've made, it mounts inside the larger bezel which you can then mold together for seamless look, white stuff you see is bondo

I think Nissan may have changed part numbers for this piece.
This is the piece for the OEM Navi:

$400... I'm still a bit concerned, I just want the NAV/cubby replacement, do I have to re-buy the entire center dash trim?

It should be cheaper than that.

It should be this one for just the cubby and lid:

what's ridiculous is the cost of the nismo version for my year...almost 700 USD lol

I did a nexus install in my miata last year. And still runs great, I've always wanted to do one in my z. Would the nav bezel fit my 09. Cause the glove compartment space is just to small. Also they have timurs rom for the 2gen tablet to. Which in can slap a wireless charger on th back of the tablet that way you can use a otg cable with a USB and not have to worrie about charging. That's what I would use for my z. If I could get it to fit horizontally.

Looks like that bezel is $50 and Android tablets are easily found under $100 so pretty cheap to give it a try.

Dammit, now I've got another project to add to my never-ending list lol :tiphat:

If you have your developer setting enable you can in there that has an option to keep screen while charging that way when it gets power it will come on automatically. That's how I have mine. Also theres also Tasker which I use to cut it off. Cause I go days without driving my miata since i got the z. Theres also a mod that will boot the tablet if it's off, when it gets power. But you have to do that through recovery mode. Mine is a permanent install so that was a must. There was tone of info on xda developer. And on the miata forums. Sadly not many have been done for the z at least i havent seen many :(

That's the cubby and lid for the base model though not the navi bezel, which doesn't have a lid. I'll see if I can find the one I'd looked up before. It was something like $85 lost and their discounted price was $50 and change.

I've never used an android tab, but assume developer mode is something you can set it to by default? Or do you need to do something to the OS to make that happen?

I'd be doing a parmanent install too and these android tablets are so cheap that makes it feasible. As long as it works with the DashCommand app, has Bluetooth, and will power on and off with the car that's all I need for me anyways. Not trying to replace my head unit or anything like that, I just want the additional gauges for monitoring.

And if this can be pieced together for a couple hundred bucks or less like it sounds like then il certainly give it a try.

You just go to setting and go to about tablet. Then clicked the build number repeatedly and then it will tell you, something like you have enable developer mode. And yeah i know, they've only gotten cheaper since I did mine. The one in the miata is a 1st gen nexus but I just got a 32gb second gen I for like 140. And the one in the miata runs, torque app which I believe is the same as dash command. And it runs it no problem. I'm actaully looking at hooking a megasquirt to the tablet when I go turbo later this year. I've seen it done before. And to do it in the miata was like 220 I belive I got the tablet for 50 and the radio for like 160. Mine is bluetooth to the radio. And the radio is in the glove box. But I've seen some complicated ones that run an amp and run the tablet by its self. Not my cup of tea

But then again to do it in the maita I just had to dremel and cut the dash alittle. To get it to fit behind the bezel. Honestly it was only easy cause it near perfect fit for the second gen miatas.i mean it literally snaps right in no joke

Wish it were that easy. Though I don't see this as something really difficult. Basically just need to rig up a way to mount the table on the backside of the navi bezel. Which for that matter could just be epoxying a case on from behind with a few angle brackets.

Had to pull my centre panel off this morning to require my head unit and pull some wires and it looks like the pocket is all one piece part of the finished cover panel, so doesn't look like it's just the navi bezel insert but the whole piece would have to get from the dealer and screw on my existing vent pieces etc. That just means a bit more expensive piece though, not more work.

Nexus 7 works really well for this, and is not very difficult to mess with either. I have my nexus 7 (2012 version, cost like $60 to buy and is in great operating condition) completely set up and ready, I've just been lazy about finishing the set up. USB ROM for Nexus 7 is perfect for setting up a Nexus 7, and you can get the 2012 version for free if you search. It doesn't have any more continued updates, but it's free. I believe there is a 2013 version released but costs some money. It has more support for it. Little fuzzy on the details though I did all this set up/research back in August.

Here is a link for some info:
https://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-usbrom/

Here is how I set up my Nexus:
http://i.imgur.com/51xLmlal.jpg
It turns on automatically with car boot if its plugged into power and will immediately shut off into a deep sleep mode when power is stopped. Mine is set up to use torque with an OBD32 plug via bluetooth, but dash command is also viable. The biggest cost would be trying to make it look OEM like which is what I'd like. Wish there was a plug and play option.

Just messing around a while back with positioning and how it felt to use while driving and all.

Is that the Torque app display in the bottom picture? Looks like it's a bit more versatile than DashCommand. If so I'll definitely give it a try if I pick up an android and go that route. I don't think that app is available for iOS if I remember right.

Tenny 01-20-2017 12:25 PM

Yeah, the second is the torque pro display. There are three screens available by default but you can customize it to the nth degree. I've not tried DashCommand so I can't comment, but the Torque app has done everything I could need. You're right, Torque is not available for iOS.

So I'm wondering what the whole part is.

I'll check if there is a part number on the lid itself when I get home.

This is the back of the stock non-navi cubby for reference. Just happened to take this pic early this morning when I pulled it apart.

It seems like that part number covers the cubby shelf bit as well as the front of the assembly, so we just need to determine what exactly is the correlating part number for the nav version of this assembly. Apparently there are a LOT of very similar part numbers so it isn't quite as straight forward as it should be.

If I have a chance I'll stop by the dealership one of these days and ask.

The only downside with going with a Nexus 7 Gen 1 and Gen 2 is that they are discontinued and hard to find in good shape. I did have a user wanting to use Gen 2 and I have a design for it. Hopefully I can get my stuff up and running soon to sell, but you'd have to at least upgrade to a Nexus 7 Gen 2 if you like my design.

yeah, and the radio must sit lower since the face plate around the radio sits lower in all the nav pictures too.

From taking mine off this morning it looks as though either the cubby or the nav bezel comes attached to the front finished piece as part of the assembly. The vent ducts screw on but otherwise looks like it comes together.

After you unscrew the vent ducts you can remove the cubby. The lid also comes off.

Thanks for clearing that up. Couldn't tell without unscrewing those vents.

Which means it should be as simple as swapping out the cubby tray for nav bezel. Provided the dealer will sell it as such.

This is exactly what I'm hoping to do. It looks like this problem has been solved before but there's no documented information on that particular part number.

It seems like we may actually have to purchase the WHOLE thing to get the Nav Bezel. I'm going to have my center console 3d scanned in the coming weeks and see if I can produce a 3d-printable Nav/Screen bezel.

I molded a box out of carbon fiber to fit in the space here. Then skinned the mdf faceplate out of carbon fiber.

I have seen a couple people place a box in this space but I dont think anyone has made one out of carbon. I'll post a full build thread when i sort all my pictures.

Yeah I checked out your thread, and commented on it. I had expressed interest in buying it if it came out for the tablet I had, or at least decently close and I can modify it to my own use. I would have gotten the Gen 2, but I found a near perfect condition Gen 1 and it's already set up the way I want it. So I'll either modify yours or try and just find an alternate way.

Not a huge mod. However, sometimes just a accent makes a big difference in the interior.
I did carbon fiber inside door barrel covers with matching gauge(3 on the das)cove covers.
Just gives a hi-tech look to my Z34. An added plus is the durabilty from the barrel covers.
My old Z33 had scratches on the barrels--ugh!
ebay has e'm for about 50 bucks shipped.
