Hey Fringe,
I don't have access to my car at the moment, but I thought I could help with measuring the Ti tips for you. I took some quick measurements from the mounting hole on the tip to the backside of the tip, so you can get an idea of length. Measurements are in MM. Here is how the tip sits on the exhaust. Excuse my crude MS Paint skills, this is a very basic idea. But you can see how the exhaust tip extends past the steel inner exhaust, and also extends outward toward the rear of the car. Also, of course, the inner steel mounting piece has an oval mounting hole, so you can adjust the length. When I get my car back, I can do some more caliper measurements of the actual tail section of the exhaust for you. EDIT: I also wanna note that from the side of the car, you could see the backside of the tips, showing that they were not a uniform piece of the exhaust. Not saying that it was a bad look, in fact, I loved the side profile, just a note I remembered. I think an XVO Afterburner tip that was around the same length or somewhere close to the stock HKS tips would be good. Any other opinions on that? |

Okay.
Two final things: 1. Does anyone know what size metric wrench fits the nut? From that I can tell what the actual bolt size is. If no one knows for sure, it's no biggie. I will use a grade 8 equivalent M8 and that will suffice for the app. 2. I need to know the distance the oval that the bolt goes through is from the outer edge of the exhaust system. The design rendered above is it...save for adjusting the bolt hole size and making sure that the bolts are positioned so the tip can be snugged up to the exhaust system. None of the adjustments I need to make will affect the look of the tip. So I posted them a while ago and no one responded, other than to ask when they would be finished...so I'm not sure what's wrong. The conditions everyone set have been met. The tips slide over and conceal the whole exhaust section just like the original tubes do, and these variants completely conceal the attaching bolts from the outside. What's wrong? What did I miss? Thanks! Working with actual forum members to develop something they want isn't usually done, and I really hope this turns into a success story. |
Okay. This image here has potential. The metal extending past the main body at the rear would have to go. The actual exhaust pipe exits at an angle and is much narrower. The tip actually conceals the hemispherical exhaust end that angles away back toward the resonator.

Fringe, I really appreciate what you're trying to do for us. The problem is you REALLY need a donor car to see exactly what you are working with. There has to be someone in Texas that can drop by and let you get all the measurements you need. I would make the drive myself if I could get the army to give me leave long enough! lol :icon17: |
Sorry for not explaining better. That inner tube extending out of the rear in that rendering is simulating the exhaust itself. I should have, but didn't draw it necking down and going toward the resonator like it actually does. The renderings down below that one don't show that tube at all.

Thank you Alstann. Can you do one more thing? Will you verify that the tube with the slots in in fact 4.5" OD tubing? I believe the system I took my preliminary measurements from was an HKS copy, and I want to verify that these tips will fit your HKS setup. Don't want to get screwed by some silly inconsistency.
Other than that, I will make the adjustments and prepare the drawing for quoting. I should have prices in less than 2 weeks. I wil renew our vendor status here and once the required number of pre-orders are filled, it will take about a month to start shipping tips. It's almost time for the hardest part...picking the colors. :) Below are some renderings of the new perforated tip that is going on my bike and being adapted to the GTRs. Is this something some of you might dig? Obviously the "Afterburner" isn't for everyone...so we have a few other designs in the pipeline. Alright! Thank you all, this is epic and I think the first time something like this has been done... usually people make something and just try to sell you on how awesome it is, then tell you that you have to buy it however they give it to you.
We do it a little different. We allow you to make it YOURS. We aren't afraid to ask for input or just generally be straight with people. Fabrication and manufacturing can be a strange world. Generally we see salesmen that need something to sell so they can chase dollars...and fabricators tend to build things because they enjoy building things. What I've seen this lead to on multiple occasions is salesmen (or anyone else with some money) readily take advantage of a fabricators love of creation and just swoop in and claim ownership of whatever is being created, since they feel that without them there wouldn't be any sales. Fact is, without the creators creating, there would be nothing to sell and no reason to have "salesman". Fringe XVO is taking it back. We are not salesman. Well maybe Carl is a little bit, but he is multi-purpose. I give you my word, Fringe will NEVER BE RUN BY SALESMAN. Granted, we have to generate sales, right? The point I'm trying to make here is that we aren't out to SELL you on anything. We are just here to be awesome. We are just here to do cool and fun stuff, because it's fun and awesome to do that...and we want you to want it. We like things that look good. We like things that look good AND function. Sometimes the function is just to look good. Sometimes the function is to make power. Either way, everything is function. People often don't get it. Sometimes just looking good IS THE FUNCTION, and some things just function better than others. If I type "function" again I'm gonna shoot myself, but the point is this: We are not here to get rich. We are not here to be "ballers". We simply exist to do great things. Either you get it or you don't. Happy 4th. |

hmmmm... not sure about that.... If they are not symetrical, then they might look poser'ish. I think leaving them the same length as the stock HKS tips is best. I don't mind the 'sleeved' look.

We could make them a little longer than the HKS slip-on tubes. How much room do we have before the tip would contact the exhaust muffler?

Not enough for people that recess them to look more stealthy. If you extend them fully out along the adjustment slot, then it is more noticeable.

Looks good! I like the hyper silver finish. Is there an way to eliminate the rivets and maybe weld the inner sleeve to the outer sleeve? Or maybe the rivets would not be necessary seeing as how the slip on end would be bolted onto the HKS exhaust... that would make the inner sleeve removeable. Maybe allow for different colour inserts even... just a thought.

The rivets are necessary. The outer section could be welded to the inner, but that forces everything to be plain stainless. The only way we can make these tips available in two tone color is to use a two piece design that allows for each colored section to be powdercoated separately, then fixed together using a method that will not destroy the coating...hence the rivets. Due to the electro-magnetic properties of the powdercoating process, simply powdering a finished tip limits us to a certain few powders like all flat black, which tends to hide the detail and precision that goes into each of the tips. Not a single customer has ended up getting them in all flat black for that very reason. Most powders will not go through the small gap between each fin because of the magnetism.
The silver outer and black inner is the "Sentinel Steel" variant. If you haven't seen the "Phantom Black" sets for the r35 then you are missing out, cause they are subtle yet sexy, and one of my personal favorites. "Phantom Black" is flat black outer with a high gloss black inner. As far as other combinations go, well, the world is your oyster. I'm still waiting for someone to do something flashy, like color match the calipers with the inner section. Eventually the inner part of the inner section will be carbon black from the exhaust, leaving only the tubing visible through the fin gaps to show the accent color that matches the calipers. I think that could look totally bad ***. Most people just tend to ask me what they should get though. I give people choices, and they just give it back to me, lol. I will be sending these off to get quoted in the next couple of days and then I will have hard price numbers. Give me a week or two. |

Thank you for your patience gentlemen (and women?). I have poured over the designs, literally quadruple checking each calculation. I apologize for the time involved, but I have to make sure things are perfect the first time.
I have sent off the designs for component quoting and should have the hard pricing in a couple forms by Friday. So here's the part we all wanted to see but don't really want to see. With these prices, I'm not even barely making anything...but not every project is about the money. If you guys are willing to organize and move forward, then I'll do the work. Here are the hard numbers. 2 sets @ $700 each 4 sets @ $400 each 8 sets @ $320 each 12 sets @ $250 each Notice the power of the group buy here. Just getting the 2 sets made for Alstann and Wheee is just plain ridiculous...in fact I don't even consider it slightly reasonable until we get into the 12+ range. My problem is I can't justify the capital it would take for me to spend in order to put 12 sets of tips on the shelf when no more than two people have really shown serious commitment. So now that this just got real...who's in? I triple-dog-dare Alstann, Wheee!, and 10 more of you HKS owners. :) I've done my part and I've done it for free. Where is everyone else? :) |
