Yea i know it's a bummer. I researched this about as far as anyone could. The issue is that the US and Europe systems are completely different down to the hardware. No clue why they do this and yes, it sucks to have to stick a nasty Garmin on your windshield when you have a nice built in unit in the dash.
BMWs are worse in this regard. The computers in the US vs Euro models are purposely set up to disallow import of a US model back into Europe. This is because a US BMW is 2/3 the cost. Prior to them making the change, people were re-importing BMWs back into the EU at significantly reduced costs. That all said, there are aftermarket car PC options that you could do. Also android integration has been done as well. These are pretty invasive options, but having it to do again, I'd likely go that route.
