How often do you redline your Z? Is it bad for the car?

First off all, I have never redlined the car when it was cold, but every time I do redline it, I still think I am damaging the car in the long run even though its a sports car. I'm not talking about bouncing off the limiter either, just shifting at 7.3k makes me feel guilty.

Also, is there a difference redlining a 6MT and a 7AT?

You bought a sports car, enjoy it. Take care to do the scheduled maintrnance. U know what took me s long time to get used to in the 7at? Downshift 3rd at 65 mph, i came from a v8, jumpings revs like was hard to get used too...

Your car does have warranty? I wouldnt do it if the oil temp was over 215 or so but thats me.

If Nissan thought it was bad they wouldn't let you do it. It's a sports car with a high revving V6, enjoy it!

Says the guy from Dubai. :stirthepot: :icon17:

Not very often. Maybe twice a week. I actually enjoy driving it lightly. Its effortless acceleration.

don't redline it man, keep it under 2k rpm :icon17:

I rarely redline. I'm scared something will break tbh lol. 6k-6.5k is my spirited driving.

SouthArk370Z 05-22-2014 12:23 PM

Bumping the redline every now and then will add some wear and tear but Life's too short to get all that worried about it. Going by what I've read, the engine will not hold up to a lot of high rev use (oil pump and valvetrain tend to crater).

Like zefaulter, I seldom take mine above 6-6.5k. But I grew up with relatively low-revving V-8s and anything above that makes me nervous. :)

Mutiple times a day. it was set there for a reason, if they though they would all be blowing up they would lower it, you think Nissan wants to be paying out a bunch of motor claims? Sold my 350z with 110k owned it since 60k, beat the living you know what you of it. now mines boosted and has take 5k hard miles, still havent gotten it out of my system yet :). I would only classify abuse as going all out for hours on a race track, on the street, no way.

I hope your engine holds up for over 110k again. reading your comment is probably gonna make me redline mine today

I'm in a DE 350Z but...

I started autocrossing my car less than a year after I bought it. Since then, it is generally getting thrashed, or getting driven to place where it will be thrashed.

I redline my Z often. (I bought the car new at the end of 04)

Amuse370z 05-22-2014 03:54 PM

I mean I've redlined it probably 20 times total since I've owned the car, and I've only put on 5000 km on her. I just feel guilty doing it, but it does sound pretty awesome.

I go to 6k maybe once a day or so though.

1slow370 05-22-2014 04:22 PM

I will be parting out my full NA setup and with the drysump i hit 8300 a couple times without valve float, don't know how long it would like to do that though.

JARblue 05-22-2014 04:32 PM

50K miles. I've done my fair share of redlining. I typically try not to bounce the limiter though (probably done it a handful of times).

I find that 1st and 2nd gear redline pulls are just the thing I need to get me revved up :yum: I wish my wife was that easy :icon17:

It's my DD, so I don't beat on it all the time. But it's rare that I don't have a few 5K+ RPM shifts on my daily commute. Only a few times have I ever done multiple redline pulls in a row. Normally, I like to beat her just a bit and then give her some tender loving. Kinda like the bedroom ;)
