Hey Guys, when I was doing research on getting 4.08s for the 7AT 370Z I noticed there was a lot of people asking questions that were not getting answered. I'm going to give you guys some information I read up on and also my review after getting my gears installed yesterday.

Informational:

-The 7AT will lose cruise control. The light will just flash when you try turning it on.

-The RPM increase is around 600-700. See Videos of before and after posted below.

-Due to the RPM increase, there will be a decrease in highway MPG, but you can possible see an increase in MPG in city driving since it takes less work for the engine to get to the speed limit. Personally, I didn't notice a difference at all.

-For the 7AT you will need the differential from a manual 370Z to install the 4.08s.

-You can use the stock VLSD or an aftermarket one.

-The top speed will decrease from something like 200MPH to 180MPH. Realistically I doubt any of us will ever go that fast.

-Acceleration increases throughout all the gears and you will notice a loss in traction especially in 1st gear. Throw some good tires on there and you should be fine.

-Down Shift Rev Matching seems to be unaffected and seems to be working fine. I will drive it more in sport more within the next couple days and update if I notice anything different.

-The car is much more fun to drive now!!! :driving:

My Review:

I first want to start out by thanking Seb at SpecialtyZ for doing my install. He always does great work and answers all my questions. This is the only place I trust to take my Z. This time he did the gear install and GTM transmission cooler for me. Everything so far is working flawlessly!!!

After driving the car, you will instantly feel the difference. The car feels much faster and torquier. First gear is really short and 2nd and 3rd gear feel like your in a rocket. The fun factor is really where it's all at. The car accelerates so much faster throughout the entire RPM range, that its just a blast to smash the pedal and go.

Parts installed:
1. 4.08 gears
2. Gear install kit (Seals, bearings, shims, crush collar, etc)
3. Redline gear oil
4. Manual differential w/ stock VLSD

Seb swapped out the 3.69s from the manual diff and installed the 4.08s. Then swapped out my entire stock differential with the manual one.

We can fix the cruise control issue with a EcuTek flash :)

let me know , as i think that mine is closing the trottle bodies as it changes gears.
Its driving me nuts .

Z

Doesn't feel like it. Are you referring to shifting up or down?

Z eliminator 05-14-2013 07:24 PM

up shifting with the paddle shifters

NickD 05-14-2013 08:26 PM

No. In fact my car feels like it shifts faster now. Are you tuned?

Never heard of that.

Where are you located ?

To OP:

I'm gonna do the same, at the same place in a few days :)

brucelidat 07-15-2013 03:54 PM

OP, was Specialty Z able to do it all in one day? id you find the manual diff yourself, or did Seb help on that front? I am pretty interested in this, but would really like to do it all in one shot and not have to leave the car overnight so it can be incognito without the GF fiance knowing I dropped 2k for a new mod...

brucelidat 07-15-2013 03:54 PM

Also, did you get a tune after this or do we need it?

brucelidat 07-15-2013 04:07 PM

If a manual diff was hard to come by and I decided to drop a Quaife LSD in there along with the gears, would I get the one for the manual, auto, or vlsd? I have a 7at with sport package. Just wondering if I would need one for manuals since the gears need a manual diff for install.

G37Sam 07-15-2013 04:09 PM

A tune is not needed for this, if you send an MT pumpkin and the gears there in advance you'll save a lot of time.

I have a 7AT non sport (so open diffs) I had to do a manual quaife with gears and about 6 shims

brucelidat 07-15-2013 08:00 PM

about how much of a hit are taking in mpg in normal driving?

Red_Z 07-15-2013 09:39 PM

I have a 7AT base Z, so if I am going to do the gear and LSD the same time. I should be able to to use my own pumpkin, but I need to purchase a Manual LSD + the 4.08 gears?

If you have a base 7AT (non sport) then all you need is the manual Quaife Differential and 4.08 Gears (yes you use your pumpkin). When its in the pumpkin they will have to measure lash back to determine the shims needed for proper fitment. My car needed about 6 shims at the price of $20 each. FML

I dont feel a difference in gas mileage, but with the boost in acceleration i tend to hit the pedal harder so that lowers my MPG lol

chuckie311 07-16-2013 10:23 AM

i was talking to Seb about this when i got tuned a few weeks ago..he says he needs 3 or 4 days to do the job..
he can gets the gears and install kit but you need to get the Diff yourself..
any question just call and talk to him..

I had dropped off all my stuff when I got them in and he was able to do the gear swap during his own time. Then when I had my appt with him he pretty much just swapped out the entire differential. Swapping up the differentials doesn't take that long to do but the gear swap is time consuming. Drop of your parts to him and just schedule an appt for a different day.

Street drivingI actually think I am getting better MPG, but on the freeway I went from like 27-29MPG to like 24ish MPG. It's not that big of difference at all. Check out the videos I posted to see the RPM's comparison from before and after the gears.

1slow370 07-26-2013 03:13 AM

i have a 6mt rear pumpkin with quaife installed in the for sale section if anyone has an lsd auto pumpkin it's a straight trade.

megalapagas 07-26-2013 04:16 AM

Can this work if I later FI my Z? Or its strictly N/A? I have a 7AT touring with sport package?

Chuck33079 07-26-2013 07:33 AM

You're changing the gears in the wrong direction if you're going turbo down the line. You would end up making first and second gear completely useless.

1slow370 07-27-2013 05:30 PM

yeah the factory manual rear gear would be about as high as you would want to go for a turbo car. the more low and midrange power you have the smaller gears are are better. i'm going to have way too much low end so i want the automatic ratio. if you are going single turbo then a slightly taller gear doesn't hurt for getting off the line.

Muney2bMade 08-24-2013 04:00 PM

Sorry for bringing this thread up from a while ago but just a few questions.

Will this mess anything up in the long run, does it put more stress on the car?

Can you keep everything else stock and simply just do a 4.08 gear swap, rear axle will be completely fine no matter how many times you floor it from a dig?

and what is this "micro polished" how much is it and what exactly does it do. Probably obvious, but just making sure.

Thanks

Don't own a Z, or any car as of now, but planning on getting one in March and I want this to be one of my first mods. Thanks again.

binary0x01 10-15-2013 08:02 PM

Thanks for the review.

Seb's putting in a Quaife LSD, 4.08 gears, whiteline diff bushings and the same fluid you've got, this monday :)

EDIT: I've got a manual gearbox though, but I like shifting :)

chuckie311 10-15-2013 10:35 PM

Mine go in on Wednesday

As per op:

It all depends on how cheap you can find a manual 370Z differential. I got lucky and got one for a little under 400 bucks. As far as the rest of the stuff goes, here is the approximate amount they cost.

Gears (4.08s)= $535
Install kit = $300
Fluid = $30
370Z manual diff = best price you can find one for
Labor/install = $500, depends on your local shop.

So you are looking somewhere around 1400 +tax and whatever price you can find a used/new manual 370Z diff.

You welcome, you will love them man. Make sure you got some good tires on there because you will definitely be breaking those tires loose much easier.

Yeah that's next on the list.

I wanna do the tires and the SpecialtyZ clutch and flywheel combo install.

After that I'll prolly do front and rear camber arms and toe bolts and all that stuff just to finish it off. But then again, there's always room for seats and a proper harness bar and rear spoiler lol... stuff keeps on adding up!!

blueranger 10-19-2013 10:53 PM

I am wanting to do this Mod with the stock 6MT 3.69 gears.

My 7AT is a non-sport and need to know what parts are needed if I use a sport version pumpkin with stock LSD.

If anyone can chime in :tiphat:

1slow370 10-20-2013 01:13 AM

I did that for critical, if you get a 370z manual sport pumpkinyou can just bolt it to your car no extra parts required. Just make sure you get the pumpkin completely assembled with shafts in it. And don't get one from a g37 sedan different flange on those.

Any chance of getting a Part # to try and locate a 370Z manual sport pumpkin?

I would like to find one online :tiphat:

the base one would work but you should drop a quaife in too

Quaife Differential

1slow370 10-22-2013 01:41 AM

yeah there really is no comparing the vlsd to real diff. on a side not my 2000 xterra which cost $19k when new has a baller factory clutch lsd just like every other xterra even the base models. guess they must be considered a higher performance vehicle ;)

Edit: also the quaife for the base model diff is the cheapest too, even if you dont get the lsd right away don't forget to grab some poly bushings while you have the pumpkin out anyway.

1slow370 10-22-2013 02:01 AM

Yeah i just went with the energy suspension bushings they are stiffer. Most of the mounts on my car are going to be poly anyway so i says bring on the noise.

This item is listed as a LSD. I thought that would come from a Sport model not the base

Sorry I am confused can you clarify?

look at the picture diff says right on it in white paint "non lsd"
