There is a good reason why LS swaps are so popular. Now go figure it out. But if someone has the money who really loves the Z and is a die hard, then go ahead and do the VK56 swap. But you still wont be as fast as an LS implant equipped with the right parts.

to 1slow370, good luck and and all the best on your build. On the lookout for another Z, this time a 350. And yes, i plan to put an LS V8 in it. By the way, anybody have a house with a 5 car garage for sale? LOL

i get it, they are light, make power, blah blah blah... but the problem is, they are EVERYWHERE. its the cheap out nowadays. total complete lack of originality. it doesn't make a car better. if i see a miata with a turbo ls, guess what? I still don't want it. LS's don't make a car better, they jsut say, "i somewhat regret my buying decision and wish i woulda gone v8".

This is a philosophical debate.

"My car is an extension of myself" vs "My car is a tool I use for something"

There can be no consensus on who is in the right and who isn't.

Myself, I want what works the best for the least amount of money... Which means I'll be going with the "cheap out" which does make the car better, for me. Because the point is to be fast, not to be unique or original.

I don't get the LS hate. Sure, it's not new or original. It also makes loads of power, parts cost next to nothing, and it'll fit in just about anything. The VK swap is awesome, but you could probably be all in on a LS swap for the cost of the VK motor alone. Still, I can't wait to see how this turns out. Either way it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

This discussion is getting a little snobby lol

A true enthusiast doesn't hate on an engine "because it's everywhere". It's everywhere for a reason, and that is for being a successful V8. Yes it has outdated technology and is not JDM but to tell me it won't put a smile on your face when swapped into a Z is nonsense. The LS engines work!

The VK56 was never designed to race or go fast, it's an SUV/truck engine designed to haul and tow fat azz trucks around. If you have the extra money to convert it into a sportier engine then by all means.

I can understand a desire to keep a Nissan motor in a Nissan car. In any case, for a personal project like this, the goal is clearly more than merely hitting a power level or having a certain number of cylinders.

Chuck33079 04-23-2013 08:56 AM

I'm just looking forward to seeing a Z with V8 levels of torque, regardless of the manufacturer of the motor.

edub370 04-23-2013 09:02 AM

i dont hate on it cuz its everywhere. i hate on it because it shows a complete lack of originality or thinking on your own. to have something that so many other people have would bother me. there's something to be said for doing something with the tools u have. not just saying "ah f*ck, just throw an LS in er."

MyKindaGuise 04-23-2013 09:03 AM

I would like to see another VK56 Z. Someone needs to do it for sure. The only one I know of is a ITB VK56 that is owned by the owner of MCA suspension.

Forsberg has the vk56 in his drift 370z.

So why are you driving a commercially produced automobile at all?

At the very least, you should have bought something older and put a completely random drive train in it, since being "original" is the whole point, right?

I'm thinking a Subaru Brat with a D series Honda motor.

That's more your style, surely!

:)

That motor is nuts, it's a Nismo-sourced Baja truck motor, or so I've heard.

Yeah it is out of the trucks but they sourced all the race components for it.
He posted once about what all he got from Nissan & what they had to custom fab and it was 50/50.
