Years ago my dad had a '64 Mercedes that was drinking oil (1qt/50 miles). I didn't know this and was driving around one evening and everytime I would accelerate, the gauge would drop to nothing. I put two quarts in and still didn't show anything on the dipstick.  |
Ok, sure...live your life based on the gauge alone and don't bother to open the hood to check oil. 
An oil pressure gauge can help determine low oil level but typically under hard cornering or when pushing the go pedal hard. It's mainly a tool for other indicators such as too high oil temp (low pressure), possible relief valve problems (high pressure) or oil pump going out (pressure all over the place).
I believe the Z has an oil warning light anyway so if oil pressure is that bad it will indicate that with an idiot light. Is it really that hard to open the hood and check the dipstick every week?
