Lots of auto shifters have a leather boot (including, BTW, the G37) -- it looks better. There's no special reason for having one on a manual gear shifter either (see further years of terrible rubber boots...).
It's cosmetic. No one is meant to be fooled. No posturing intended or attempted. But whatever gets you through your day...
