Limey, check out this thread:

AT Shifter Mod: Reverse the Up/Down Shift Directions

I had this done and swapped in a slightly nicer and lower sitting knob (detailed here: DIY OEM Shift Boot Install on Automatic and here DIY OEM Shift Boot Install on Automatic )

Makes use of the shifter work much more intuitively -- I use that now more than the paddles -- love it

So you made your auto look like a manual and manually shift via the stick rather than the paddles....

I did this too, it's much better that way (push forward to downshift, pull back to upshift). I still use the paddles mostly, but sometimes the shifter. In the long run I'm moving to steering wheel buttons (red downshift on the left, green upshift on the right, like the paddles), but I haven't finished that project yet!

I still don't understand why anyone would change to this, its logically backwards. I'm going to pull back to shift up? up and forward are more logically related than up and back ever will be. What am I missing?

When you are accelerating it feels more natural to pull back then to push forward. Mazda has been the only one that's gotten it right all these years.

Mazda has other things back to front also. On my 13 speed 3 down would go up on my radio presets and up would go down for radio presets. Pissed me off to no avail.

fair enough

I like it the way it is but its pretty nice that its just that easy to change if you do so desire.

Reminds me of gaming, the people who use "standard" button operation, or "inverse"

My argument for it (and presumably the reason sequentials go that way): it flows better with the g-forces in play, especially under braking. With the stock arrangement, while you're being thrown forward against the harnesses under braking you're trying to pull back on the shifter to downshift, whereas when you're being pushed back into the seat under acceleration you're trying to shove forward on the shifter to upshift. With the reversed arrangement, you push forward when you're being pushed forward, and pull back when you're being pulled back.

You probably don't notice this logic in street driving, because you're downshifting to accelerate and upshifting when you're done accelerating, which is the opposite of normal. On-track you're only ever downshifting while braking or upshifting while accelerating.

What's with the three-pedal orthodoxy getting their collective panties in a bunch in this thread?

It's a shame so many people openly and proudly stake their manhood on the transmission of the car they drive -- gentlemen, prepare to be neutered in the coming years by all new sports cars and exotics...

The GT-R, LF-A, and 4C, just to name a few, are aiming to geld the lot of you it seems... better stock up on 1993 Civics to keep testosterone at optimal levels.
