oh i see it now.

Drive whatever makes you happy. I prefer manual, so all my cars are manual. If you prefer automatic, drive that. Why all the angst?

Stock for stock a 7At Z vs 6Mt... Drumroll please... 7At Z is faster end thread

Merge

b15 05-12-2014 10:36 PM

We were due for another one of these.

wstar 05-12-2014 10:51 PM

Frost fixed everything. He merged the 6MT and 7AT into a 6.5HT. It shifts twice as fast as the 7AT and it doesn't have a clutch pedal, but it includes a needle embedded in the shift knob that injects you with testosterone every time you touch it, so that you don't go all girly on us from not using a clutch pedal.

wstar 05-12-2014 10:55 PM

Also, just to keep the spirit of our lively debate thriving!

No.

I'd bet a pretty penny I could swap cars with you and get a better lap time in your 6MT than you could in my 7AT.

:iagree:

But I still like the manual. Rolling my own gears is more fun for me. Though I did consider an AT since WDC area is always in competition for the worst traffic in the nation.

Nissan UK specs the stick faster 0-60 than the manual. In fact all their 0-60 specs on their three 370z models seem a little conservative compared to what I read on here.

Seriously, do you like your car? Figuring out how to shift the 7at as someone mentioned, redline shift, repeat. if it takes more than a week to figure out how to drive your sports car in a sporty fashion just leave in drive and pretend the paddles arent there or trade it for something else less sporty.

LOL. Don't be mad bro. I only wanted to find out how folks work their 7AT, the fella that mentioned redline for the first few gears learned me something. Will try it out someday.

Limey, check out this thread:

http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...irections.html

I had this done and swapped in a slightly nicer and lower sitting knob (detailed here: http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...ml#post2133775 and here http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...ml#post2730788 )

Makes use of the shifter work much more intuitively -- I use that now more than the paddles -- love it

So you made your auto look like a manual and manually shift via the stick rather than the paddles....:shakes head:

I did this too, it's much better that way (push forward to downshift, pull back to upshift). I still use the paddles mostly, but sometimes the shifter. In the long run I'm moving to steering wheel buttons (red downshift on the left, green upshift on the right, like the paddles), but I haven't finished that project yet!

I still don't understand why anyone would change to this, its logically backwards. I'm going to pull back to shift up? up and forward are more logically related than up and back ever will be. What am I missing?

When you are accelerating it feels more natural to pull back then to push forward. Mazda has been the only one that's gotten it right all these years.

1slow370 05-14-2014 01:46 PM

Its to make it a POSER racing sequential manual transmission lol

Mazda has other things back to front also. On my 13 speed 3 down would go up on my radio presets and up would go down for radio presets. Pissed me off to no avail.

fair enough :tiphat:

I like it the way it is but its pretty nice that its just that easy to change if you do so desire.

mselph544 05-15-2014 11:44 AM

Reminds me of gaming, the people who use "standard" button operation, or "inverse"
To each their own

wstar 05-15-2014 04:47 PM

My argument for it (and presumably the reason sequentials go that way): it flows better with the g-forces in play, especially under braking. With the stock arrangement, while you're being thrown forward against the harnesses under braking you're trying to pull back on the shifter to downshift, whereas when you're being pushed back into the seat under acceleration you're trying to shove forward on the shifter to upshift. With the reversed arrangement, you push forward when you're being pushed forward, and pull back when you're being pulled back.

You probably don't notice this logic in street driving, because you're downshifting to accelerate and upshifting when you're done accelerating, which is the opposite of normal. On-track you're only ever downshifting while braking or upshifting while accelerating.

What's with the three-pedal orthodoxy getting their collective panties in a bunch in this thread?

It's a shame so many people openly and proudly stake their manhood on the transmission of the car they drive -- gentlemen, prepare to be neutered in the coming years by all new sports cars and exotics...

The GT-R, LF-A, and 4C, just to name a few, are aiming to geld the lot of you it seems... better stock up on 1993 Civics to keep testosterone at optimal levels.

Jordo! 05-15-2014 06:21 PM

BTW:

"Mad" Max Rockatansky, Michael Knight, and "The Bandit" all drove AT's.

/End thread.

And the Dodge Daytona aka chrysler laser in the 1986 film "the wraith" (driven by an alien of course, thats much more tough) was an automatic also. Ta dao..

Lots of auto shifters have a leather boot (including, BTW, the G37) -- it looks better. There's no special reason for having one on a manual gear shifter either (see further years of terrible rubber boots...).

It's cosmetic. No one is meant to be fooled. No posturing intended or attempted.

But whatever gets you through your day...

Speaking of panties in a bunch....

Sure the G37 also has a little thing next to it called a gear indicator. You know what's special to a manual? Not having one.

Hey if covering your shifter to make it look like a manual and then using the stick to manually shift your auto gets you through your day :ugh2:

You should add a foot parking brake so its like you have three pedals too. Lots of cars have one not just manuals

It is a functional shifter you know... it's not as if it isn't designed to be used that way. Reversing the up/down made it a lot more fun and intuitive than the paddles, and I found that I liked it even more than the paddles, so I use it most of the time.

The 7AT is designed to be manually shifted OR automatically shifted. It's not a game of pretend. You understand that, right?

There's a gear indicator on the dash... The MT also indicates gears on the dash, and most OEM knobs have a little marking of gears on the knob..

Actually, if there was a complete AT bezel, boot, and knob package that looked good and fit (e.g., the G37 one) I probably would have just gotten that to make the swap easier. What exactly are we arguing about here???

Do you have a red GT-R start button? Does that make you (or anyone else) think it's a GT-R?

It's cosmetic. That's all.

If my panties are in a bunch you've got yours twisted so tight you're starting to lose oxygen to your brain.

Good one! How many times did you have to edit to come up with that?

Nope I don't have a GTR start button and let me refresh your memory, you're a poser with your manual shift boot, removing your indicator, and manual shifting with the "stick"

Hold on, im losing oxygen. Going to hook up to my breather now. Will return when oxygenated.

I promise you that all passengers are given a clear statement of the nature of the transmission, and I like to correct spelling errors

Anyway, don't bother with the extra oxygen. It's pretty clear you've suffered permanent brain damage...
