Ive got the built 7AT stage 4 from GTM.
In MM it shifts are lighting fast. ive data loged my stock one and with the 4.08 gears,it shift in.032 of a second . first to second gear. I got .28 for the GTM . the GTM shifts way faster and firmer. my stock one did the 1/4 in 12.32. its too bad that the motor broke before i had a chance to get a good tune in the car on uprev. the 12.32 was with my Cobb tune. The big improvemnt is the 4th to 5th shift. .62 stock to just around .40 of a second. i fell with a good tune it would have gone low 12.1s. it will be hooked to the GTM 4.2 stroker N/A and run down the track in april. next the stage 3 sc goes on. will keep you guys posted. Learn how to downshift
Notice the yellow Corvette has a manual and knows how to downshift......

Absolutely subjective and it's your personal preference. I've driven M/T before with my old integra fart can machine. M/T is a lot of fun and you feel more in control of the vehicle. When I went Z hunting, I knew I wanted the 7sp A/T. The 7sp is actually pretty good and i was very surprised after driving it for hours.
Reason's I went with an A/T over the M/T: I live in the city and there's always traffic. (my Z is my DD because....well it's my only car) I have a herniated disc(being young with a disc problem, blows) and sometimes when it acts up, It pinches my nerve my left leg. Clutching in and out on a sports car with a clutch that's stiff with the kind of back problems I have isn't worth it for me. Some might even ask "LOL SO WHY THE HELL DID YOU GET IT?" easy, it's a damn Z. also all of the newer supercars these days are getting rid of the the manual box and using the paddle shifters because it WORKS. It also shifts a lot faster and that's what they're looking for. |
I would drive a manual in traffic just to despite the auto drivers.

I didn't like the 7AT. I thought it changed up too soon. But that's just me. The 6MT with rev matcher is pretty good IMHO.
I have a Jeep Wrangler which is auto and I like that, so its not like I have a pathological hatred of autos that a lot of sports car drivers do. |
A little something for you 7AT haters...
I've heard many car enthusiasts, not just Z owners, complain that real sports cars have manual transmissions. So, just out of curiosity, I did a couple of Google searches and found this:
What is the last car Ferrari made with a manual transmission? The Last Fully Manual Ferrari What is the last car Lamborghini made with a manual transmission? Lamborghini Prepares Its Final Manual Transmission Model | The Truth About Cars So, automotive Luddites :D, I bring you the future.

Um, Lambo and Ferrari "autos" have very little in common with torque convertor autos like Nissan uses. The good ones still have a clutch or two, it's just computer controlled.

yay another AT vs MT flamebait thread

My GT-R is a dual-clutched transmission. It is really more like a manual without a clutch than an automatic. I am really really hard-core manual transmission driver but other than no clutch it drives and has all the control of the manual so I made a compromise. Even if it is slower being manual I do wish they had a manual transmission version but in the end I am pretty happy with it.

Why all the hate for a torque converter auto that shifts faster than every manual here. I admit I used to hate them but then I drove it and honestly was really impressed.

at least the Z's torque converter seems to have a lock-up mechanism for all gears except 1st. |

kinda like if you enjoy music you'd probably play an instrument... even if a computer can play it 10x faster and perfectly each time than you does not mean it's better or more fun.
i like how AT drivers including corolla-s folks are all race car drivers on the street. :icon17: |
Whatever floats your boat. Alot of automatics these days shift wayyyy quicker than a manual transmission, but I like having a manual since it is so engaging. A monkey could drive an automatic. Not much talent to just pushing your right foot down and holding onto the steerting wheel. Up next: Video games where all you have to do is hit start, then then the game just plays for you. And after that, much like the player piano's of the early 1900's, cars will drive for us and maybe we will be able to get them programed to be driven to a certain style... Maybe a Tanner Faust download...then you just sit back, and get driven to work or the grocery store without having any input. So much FUN http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=HN.6080...698198&pid=1.7 |
I do have a PDK in one of my cars..............I really like it. If you think you just press the gas to use one you are sadly mistaken.

All I really care about is performance.
The 7AT on our cars shifts very fast, can be tuned to shift faster, and shows no evidence of greater drivetrain losses than the MT. As such, the 7AT is typically found a bit quicker than the 6MT in magazine tests of straight line acceleration. The 6AT on the FR-S shifts slower and shows definite greater drivetrain loss than the 6MT for that car -- pass! The Veloceter has a dual clutch AT that is found much slower in road/magazine tests than it's MT counterpart -- not sure on drivetrain losses, but also pass. There are very few quirks with the 370's 7AT that are not greatly outweighed by its merits -- it only fluid couples in first anyway, so with full lock up, it's a solid, direct connection between engine, gear, and driveshaft. If Nissan can make a tranny for the next gen Z that is a dual clutch type -- great! Provided, of course, it delivers better performance than the current offering. If it can't why bother? Just refine the current offering so that I can continue to endure traffic jams and still have a blast on an open road. |

No need to argue over transmissions. I'm just tired of all the torque converter comments. If it shifts nearly as quick as a dual clutch, proves to be more reliable than a dual clutch, and deff shifts faster than a human then where is the down side.

I loved the manuals back in the day but now with traffic and the stop and go in most major cities causes havoc driving anything with a clutch in it. Try eating a candy bar or drink your coffee on the way to work. Try having your wife drive one listening the grinding and lugging of the gears. Shall I go on??? The Auto's are fantastic to drive and if you want to play, just hit the paddles and go. Nothing wrong with either but my preference is the auto and it's good for the old farts that drive them.

Well, for one it damn sure can't handle the power the 6mt can. If you like it that's great but let's not make it out to be second coming of Christ. |
^ Exactly my wife nearly destroyed my STI 6 speed. If it wasn't for the 370z 7at I'd be driving some bloated infinity or Lexus sedan.

i crashed my Z today  i got a new set of wheels today woot! :crying: |
Yea I was referring to tadpoles post...... And Chuck the manual is by far stronger your absolutely right. My car is stock and I have no interest in modding if I did I would have of course picked the MT. But as I stated earlier I needed a car me and my wife could both enjoy. I certainly don't think it's the greatest thing ever but for a torque converted auto it's pretty god damn impressive.
