Transmission play?
Anyone else notice that something about the transmission needs some serious stiffening? I think the tranny and diff mounts are too soft. Shifting should have a way more positive and precise feeling to it. The throws are short and its a decent gearbox, but there is too much movement.
For example in those low speed on/off throttle situations you can hear the whole thing rocking back and forth with the load. This was also a big problem for the subaru folks, but it can definitely be fixed with some urethane bushing upgrades. I wonder if it was done to keep NVH down..I'm sick and tired of it though. If any vendors want to develop urethane bushings. I would be willing to help + test. Discuss. |
Z1 performance manufactured a prototype stiff transmission mount but due to lack of interest they didn't make any more, wish someone else would jump on this!

Some people, theDreamer and a few others, tried to revive interest in this but I think it came to no avail. |

RCZ already voted yes, but the thread died around 15 people, but maybe I can get them to build it for 15. I just sent a PM to them again to see if they will build it for the 15 people who said yes, maybe? |
PM'd you.

Got it, will see what they say.
|
I emailed them earlier said I'd be interested let me know if anything comes of this.
|
I may be a player on that too...
|
Totally agree. Coming from an s2k which arguably has one of the best gearboxes in the world, this is taking a bit getting used to. I know exactly what you're talking about RCZ.

Hopefully you guys get this heavy duty mount made. |
if this stops the clunking sound I am in.
|
^ Thats one of the things it will do.
I hear you tbone and AK, I came from an STI with every upgradable bushing i could find and it was the most amazing clicky feeling when shifting. No side to side play in gear at all, no guessing whether the gear was in or not and very short throws. I also had something called the "klunk killer" kit which added lock bolts and a few other things. Let me show you all the stuff there is available for that car, I'm not sure how applicable it is for the Z, but I'm sure someone with more detailed knowledge about or chassis will chime in. - Turn In Concepts |

Unabomber's Sexy Rearend sounds like a great product:icon17: |
Well I'm game. Voted in the poll.
|
I'd be interested if the pricing was reasonable.
|
I think they were quoting us around $185 for the race version, $155 for comfort.
|
^ if they quote us that much I will laugh and get them made somewhere else.
I had "unabombers sexy rear end" actually and it was one of the best mods I ever did to the sti. |
unabombers sexy rearend......I wanna try it and I don't even know what the thing does! hahahha epic name.

What is the downside, other than a little more NVH, to stiffening up bushings? Everything feels better and reacts better. Also, you know that jerking motion you get when your letting off the gas in 1st? Yeah that gets minimized too. Also you get rid of the shifting clunk... |

It definitely helps a lot, but its a combination of all the bushings in the drivetrain that will minimize that effect. There are lots of soft rubbery bushings down there for the folks who like to be as comfortable as possible. All those need to go.
|
So whats the deal RCZ? How difficult is it to upgrade something like this?
|
Check my journal thread.
I have pics and everything, but I don't want to say anything until I get some info back from Z1 Performance. The actual install takes about 10 minutes. |

Ok, I know this thread was dead a long time ago but I wanted to know if any company ever developed stiffer transmission mounts?
In the BMW M3 community they have whats called "the money shift" basically you shift into the wrong gear due to the transmission torquing and the gear not being where it was if you werent hard on the gas, then your engine is destroyed. So in my BMW I got the UUC Eurethane transmission mounts with aluminum cup reinforcers (see picture)and after that never ever miss shifted becasues the gear positions remain 100% in the same position in relation to the chassis. In the case of my BMW I would rank it very high as a good functional mod, would probably be the same for the 370z With the 370z I am still getting used to it but finding myself almost going into the wrong gear sometimes. I also noticed the transmission moves all over the place under acceleration and deceleration which is crap that can cause shift issues. Does anyone make something like this for the 370z? If so I will buy them today, maybe I can talk UUC into making Jap car parts. EDIT, ok google searching I found out that "Drop Engineering" makes urethane engine and transmission mounts for the 370z |
I think Kamispeed made them, however I remember when this product first underwent testing with a different manufacturer and they reported that a stiffer mount, while improve shift feel caused an excessive amount of vibration in the shifter.
