2 Different PureOne Oil Filter Models for the Z. Discuss.

Hey Guys,

This may prove beneficial to some of you guys, so I will try to explain the situation as coherently as possible. My first oil change was at 1,700 miles with Nissan Genuine Ester Oil and Purolator PureOne Filter, model PL 14612 which is:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...84/PL14612.jpg

At the PureOne website, this model was shown as the 370z's fitment. The specs are as follows:

PL14612
Specifications:
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Height: 2.93
O.D. 2.69
Relief Valve P.S.I. 14-18
Threads : M20-1.5
Type of Filter: Spin-on

I recently crossed the 5,000 mile mark and did my second oil change with Redline 5w30 oil. You can see that here:
http://www.the370z.com/366225-post25.html

However, i had forgotten that the filter model I had previously used was the PL 14612. After looking at a thread created by ModShack where it showed him using a PL 14610 model, I automatically assumed that the 14610 was the one i used the first time and performed my oil change with the 14610 model:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/IMG_3386.jpg

During the oil change, i noticed that the old and new filters were pretty different. From what i could tell, the diameter and the number of holes were the same, but the 14610 was about 1-1.5 inches longer. Also, maybe it was just my paranoia, but it felt like the 14610 was a tiny bit more loose when being screwed on to the nipple. Feeling this loose-ness, i took out the old 14612 model out of the trash can and tried fitting it on. Like i said, it could have and probably was my paranoia, but it felt like the 14612 model screwed on a tiny bit tighter. At this moment, i had no choice so i just ended up installing the larger one (14610) and calling it a day. The car ran fine and still runs fine.

Few days have passed and since i'm a pretty anal guy when it comes to the well being of my cars, i decided to research the compatibility of the two PureOne models. To make a long story short, I could not find the specs for the 14610 model. However, I ran into a numerous motorcycle forums where the guys were using the 14610 model in applications where the 14612 was the designated "OEM Replacement". Voila! seeing that gave me some peace of mind, but i wanted to and still want to find some specs for the 14610 model to make sure that the length of the filter and the filtration area is the only difference in the two models. Looking at this pic,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ilFilters3.jpg
it seems like the 14610 has the core going from top to bottom with no empty areas and I'm assuming it should be fine to use the larger one for our Z. I think it actually might be better to use the 14610 because of the larger filtration area, but i may be completely off.

Bottom line: If anyone can contribute with some specifications for the 14610 model and let us know that the two models are completely compatible, that would be awesome. If anyone has any additional knowledge that may be beneficial to this, that would be awesome as well. I just wanted to create some kind of an awareness for this because I sure as hell was scratching my head for a while when the filter that came out of the car was drastically different looking than the one i bought. Please discuss. Thanks.

Cheers,

Tim

I used K&N (HP-1008) for the last two oil changes. This time, after looking at MODSHACK's oil cooler thread and Shrute's Journal, I have decided to give Purolator PureOne filter a try. I have heard nothing but good things about them and some of my friends approved PureOne more than the K&N. Also, as you know, the stock filter is really small. If you go to the Purolator website , they actually lists the smaller PL-14612 filter for Nissan 370Z, which is comparable to the stock size. But, many members here went with PL-14610 which is slightly bigger (Please see picture below for reference). This oil filter is a little cheaper than K&N ($6) and available at all automotive stores like Autozone/Pepboys etc.

Here are some pictures to share:

Here's the filter I went with. Notice, it's the PL14610 which is slightly bigger than the stock filter

Here's a comparison picture. I took this picture because, when I went to some of the other journals, this filter looked way bigger than OEM (at least twice the size) but in reality, it's not. That's why I put an iphone next to it so that you can get an actual size idea. This filter def looks like the right size for the car, not the dinky OEM filter .

I did use the PL4610. I don't think I felt any difference in screwing it in. The ONLY difference (from K&N) was thinner rubber cushion around the edge. I am at 600 miles on this filter. I will report back if I find anything. :hello:

Interestingly, many people use the K&N HP-1010 on the 370Z because it is longer.

My Guess....It is just a size difference, the threads and seal are the same. I noticed the same thing with M1 filters (parts store had a sale, buy M1 and get a free filter). The M108 and M110 are the same except for height. My wifes CR-V takes 110, we "use" 108. But there is a LOT of room in there for a filter, so I feel the more filter sub-strait, the better the filtering capacity. Go big.

Just over 3K miles on the 14610 with no issues. As I recall from a spec I saw somewhere the filter is a 20mm thread which is what the Z takes.. Coming up on a change shortly and I'll put another purolator on..

UPDATE!!!

I dug up the specs for the 14610 model. Here they are:

Specifications:
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Height: 3.52
O.D. 2.69
Relief Valve P.S.I. 14-18
Threads: M20-1.5
Type of Filter: Spin-on

Great news everyone!!! It's confirmed that the only difference in the two filters is the height of about an inch. I guess it's safe to say that the 14610 is a better fit for the Z even though the website recommends the smaller model (14612). Thanks everyone for the help!!

Cheers,
Tim

@ tbonesteak

Thanks for the specs on the 14610 Purolator. I have many of these around as I bought a bunch for my motorcycle (Yamaha, FZ-1). Now I don't have to stock different filters, just different every thing else (washers, oils, etc).

I've been using Purolator for motorcycles as long as I can remember - its the best on the market and has been reviewed on many forums. If I come across more info on Purolator, I'll add it to this thread.

Pure one's are the best for the money but

The only knock I have heard on the pure one is a year or so ago on bobistheoilguy and it was discussed that the pure one's valve may stick if used below freezing and that it may filter too well and cause a restriction. Do not know if either or these items have been documented. I used pure one for years with very good results. I now use Mobil 1 and Amsoil but can not say that they are better but they do cost much more...

I may try the big PureOne filter next change. I looked for one at AutoZone the other night but they didn't have any. So far I've just been sticking with the HP1008.

The PL14610 crossed to a WIX 51356,
The PL14612 crossed to a WIX 51365,

None the less, WIX recomends a 51358 for our cars.

I looked into it all 3 filter's use the same thread 20x1.5 MM

So basicly looking at the GPM these filters can flow

51358 flows 8-10gpm
51365 flows 9-11gpm
51356 flows 9-11gpm

If any of you are interested in using WIX Filters I myself have neve had any issues.
