Default Help with Engine Noise Ban25's Z

Got a tapping sound that sounds like its from the valve train.

Location seems to be at the rear cylinder on the drivers side bank.

Rod bearings and oil system have been checked, and the valve train clearances are all around 11 thousandths between the buckets and the cams which is within spec.

Running C1 JWT cams. The car is Ban25's here on the forum.

If anybody can help or direct me to check something else I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks guys
-James

Lots of potential slop and noise in the VVEL system.

Might look at the VVEL actuator shaft, linkage, adjusters and rocker bushings.

Yeah I checked the intake cams and they seem fine, noise is definitely coming from the exhaust cam area but everything seems to be fine.

Something I'm missing with the cams or the area more towards the back of the motor maybe?

Exhaust leak at the header/head flange?

Seen bad welds (pin holes) on tubes to the flange joint, leak and make ticking noise also.

Hey yeah I checked that too. Sprayed everywhere with soapy water, no leaks of any kind. The sound is definitely metallic, a more of a tap than a tick. I'm in touch with Seb and sent him videos of the sound from different positions around the engine.

Not sure how to post them on here I'm sure it would help you guys out

Exhaust cam end play, wrist pin on number 6, or piston slap on number 6.

Pull the coil pack on number six and start it up. If the noise disappears, then thats not good. If the noise gets louder thsts also not good. If the tapping stays the same - then I would figure that cylinder/piston is not the problem.

Is there a specific way to check the end play on the cams?

I seriously doubt it is the cam causing an issue. You may have something else going on that is more serious. Have you checked oil pressure? If it is low at idle you have a gallery gasket issue.

Oil pressure checked, plenty at idle not low at all. Walks like duck, quacks like a duck right?...

There is wear on the lobes, pics sent to JWT. You can see the rings forming on the tips.

Post a picture. I would like to see the wear. Go to JWT C2 cams if you need too. Not sure how the Jun cams will do.

Lobe wear can be due to an inferior material used on the lobes commonly associated with regrinds but not unheard of with new billet units neither.

Without pictures we can't see anything to be able to give sound advice. If he is not willing to do that, can't help him.
